        Fabrication of PHBV/Keratin Composite Nanofibrous Mats for Biomedical Applications

        Keratin is an important protein used in wound healing and tissue recovery. In this study, keratin was modified chemically with iodoacetic acid (IAA) to enhance its solubility in organic solvent. Poly(hydroxybutylate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and modified keratin were dissolved in hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) and electrospun to produce nanofibrous mats. The resulting mats were surface-characterized by ATR-FTIR, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA). The pure m-keratin mat was cross-linked with glutaraldehyde vapor to make it insoluble in water. The biodegradation test in vitro showed that the mats could be biodegraded by PHB depolymerase and trypsin aqueous solution. The results of the cell adhesion experiment showed that the NIH 3T3 cells adhered more to the PHBV/m-keratin nanofibrous mats than the PHBV film. The BrdU assay showed that the keratin and PHBV/m-keratin nanofibrous mats could accelerate the proliferation of fibroblast cells compared to the PHBV nanofibrous mats.

        Explaining the Tribute System: Power, Confucianism, and War in Medieval East Asia

        In this article I remedy the popular misconception that the East Asian international system was hierarchical and non-egalitarian in history. I argue that the tribute system is mainly a function of power. Backed by power, Confucian norms and rules became the rules of the game in the system. Power asymmetry gave rise to hierarchy in foreign relations while power symmetry led to diplomatic equality between great powers. East Asia during the tenth to the thirteenth centuries was a multistate system without a regional hegemon. In the Song-Liao international system (960–1125), due to power symmetry, the two great powers conducted their foreign policy on the basis of formal equality. In the Song-Jin international system (1127–1234), the weaker Song China became a Jin vassal state and acknowledged its inferior status in the Jin-derived hierarchy. In studying historical East Asia, Confucian rhetoric needs to be examined against power reality. Only by taking power seriously can we get a better understanding of the East Asian international system.

      • Design and Evaluation of Nanorods Assembling Based on Dielectrophoresis

        <P>In this study, for assembling the nanorods which are synthesized by electrochemical deposition (ECD) method, computer simulation tool (Ansys<SUP>TM</SUP>) was used basis of dielectrophoresis (DEP) principle. Following the simulation results, the nanorods assembly device was designed and fabricated using semiconductor technology. Furthermore, an electric field was applied on the assembly electrode with AC bias and DC bias hybrid. The nanorods assembling experiments were carried out as the frequency of the electric field changed. The assembly results were confirmed using optical microscope.</P>

      • Distribution of Marine Invertebrates of Bigeum-do Island, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea

        Joint study with the Union of Biodiversity Organizations on the marine invertebrates of Bigeumdo (Is.), Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do was conducted over 3 sessions between March and September of 2011. Compared to the 2nd National Natural Environment Survey of 2000 (Ministry of Environment), 28 new species, including 10 mollusk species, were additionally observed, for a total of 71 marine invertebrates species belonging to 43 families. A list of 117 species belonging to 58 families, which includes the 71 marine invertebrates species observed during the study and the 88 species reported in the 2nd National Natural Environment Survey, was used to create an inventory of marine invertebrates studied in Bigeumdo (Is.), Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do.

      • Association Study of Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms of STAT2/STAT3/IFN-γ Genes in Cervical Cancer in Southern Chinese Han Women

        Objective: Interferon-${\gamma}$ (IFN-${\gamma}$) and signal transducers and activators of transcription (STATs) each play an important role in carcinogenesis associated with viral infection. Cervical cancer is almost invariably associated with infection by human papillomavirus (HPV), and previous studies suggested that dysregulation of the signal pathway involved in IFN-${\gamma}$ and STATs is associated. Our objective was to evaluate the association of SNPs in STAT2, STAT3, and IFN-${\gamma}$ with cervical cancer susceptibility in Chinese Han women in Hunan province. Materials and Methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood samples of 234 cervical cancer patients and 216 healthy female controls. STAT2 and STAT3 genotyping was performed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction enzyme (PCR-RE) analysis. IFN-${\gamma}$ genotyping was detected by PCR-amplification of specific allele (PASA). Results: For STAT2 rs2066807 polymorphisms, there was no significant difference of genotype distribution (P=0.827) and allele frequencies (P=0.830, OR=1.09, 95% CI: 0.51-2.31) between cases and controls. For STAT3 rs957970 polymorphisms, there was no significant difference of genotype distribution (P=0.455) and allele frequencies (P=0.560, OR=0.92, 95% CI: 0.71-1.20) between cases and controls. For IFN-${\gamma}$ +874A/T polymorphisms, there was no significant difference of genotype distribution (P=0.652) and allele frequencies (P=0.527, OR=1.12, 95% CI: 0.79-1.59) between cases and controls. Conclusion: These results suggest that polymorphisms in STAT2, STAT3 and IFN-${\gamma}$ genes are not likely to be strong predictors of cervical cancer in Han women in southern China.

      • Liposome-mediated Induction of Apoptosis of Human Hepatoma Cells by C-Myc Antisense Phosphorothioate Oligodeoxynucleotide and 5-Fluorouracil

        Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a c-myc antisense oligodeoxynucleotide and 5-fluorouracil on the expression of c-myc, invasion and proliferation of HEPG-2 liver cancer cells. Materials and Methods: HEPG-2 cells were treated with lipiosome-mediated c-myc ADSON and 5-fluorouracil. The proliferation inhibition rate and invasion were measured by MTT and invasion assay, respectively. Cell apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry and expression of c-myc by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Results: The proliferation inhibition rate was significantly higher in the antisense oligodeoxynucleotide added-5-fluorouracil group than single antisense oligodeoxynucleotide or 5-fluorouracil group (p<0.05). G0/G1 cells in the antisense oligodeoxynucleotide group and S cells in the 5-fluorouracil groups were significantly increased than that in the control group, respectively (P<0.01). The amplification strips of PCR products in 5-FU, ASODN and combination groups were significantly weaker than that in the control group (P<0.01). The percentage of c-myc-protein-positive cells were significantly lower in antisense oligodeoxynucleotide, 5-fluorouracil and combination groups than that in the control group (P<0.01). Conclusions: A liposome-mediated c-myc antisense oligodeoxynucleotide and 5-fluorouracil can inhibit the proliferation and invasion of liver cancer cells by reducing the expression of c-myc. A c-myc antisense oligodeoxynucleotide can increase the sensitivity of liver cancer cells to 5-fluorouracil and decrease the dosage of the agent necessary for efficacy, providing an experimental basis for the clinical therapy of liver cancer.

        Study on Seismic Response Characteristics and Design Parameters of Composite Isolation System for Rural Buildings

        The seismic capacity of rural buildings is low and effective execution of the traditional seismic measures is difficult. Therefore, a new type of composite isolation system, which is suitable for rural buildings in frozen earth regions, is proposed in this work. The design parameters and dynamic response characteristics of this system under rare earthquakes were investigated via systematic dynamic elastic-plastic time-history analyses performed on four different types of models. These models were established by the finite element software ABAQUS, and a composite isolation structure, sliding isolation structure, sand cushion isolation structure, and traditional masonry structure were considered. Afterward, the seismic response characteristics and design parameters of the composite isolation system were obtained by comparing the dynamic response analysis results (acceleration, displacement, and bottom shearing force) of each model. The best isolation effect was realized for the composite isolation system, where the seismic energy can be effectively absorbed and the impact of frost heaving on buildings can be eliminated. Furthermore, this effect will improve with decreasing friction coefficient of the sliding layer and increasing seismic intensity. Based on the preset isolation rate of 40%, the design values of the friction coefficient were determined to be 0.1–0.35, which are appropriate for high-seismic-intensity regions.

RPL is based on sustainability and developmental value, and takes the shaping methods of overall planning, inheritance optimization, abstract induction, continuation of the context, implanted marketing, culture cultivated, the formation of the system and perfect matching, making an effective and organic combination of the designation and orientation of RPL and regional brand mechanism, thus will create a new developmental pattern.

        Great Power Relations and East Asia: A Realist Perspective

        This article examines great power relations in East Asia from a realist perspective. By focusing on anarchy and the imperatives of power, realism anticipates states to pursue power until they have achieved regional hegemony; a rising state will develop power projection capabilities to protect their expanding interests abroad; an increasingly powerful state will develop a version of the Monroe Doctrine to keep extra-regional powers from meddling in its backyard; the reigning hegemon will take measures to contain the power of the rising competitor; and relatively weaker states will band together to balance the power of the stronger state. I argue that these realist predictions are being borne out in the context of US-China relations, the most consequential of great power relations in East Asia today. Since the US policy of engaging and accommodating China has not produced the intended outcomes, we are seeing indications that Washington is returning to the realist approach of great power politics.
