Professional and personal enhancement: a pragmatic approach in dental education

        Kandaswamy Deivanayagam,Anbarasi K 한국의학교육학회 2016 Korean journal of medical education Vol.28 No.2

Purpose: Students of health education are often offended by the transitions and challenges they face while encountering diverse people, ideas and academic workloads. They may be offended because of reasons not only related to their societal background but also to their basic competence in managing transitions. In the Asian scenario, students enter the first year of professional education in their late teen age along with the definition of self which was created by their parents. There are different issues that arise in this age group that may positively shape or negatively affect the personalities of students. They need to achieve a sense of balance between personal and professional traits on their own. Several students are often unable to cultivate the expected required qualities, which leads to an abject state of mind and hinder their progress. We identified the most common personal and professional hurdles in the lives of dental students and we provided experiential solutions to overcome the hurdles by using a sociable approach through an integrated, continuing education program. Methods: Designing and implementing a cohesive, amalgamated and inspiring personal and professional enhancement action program for dental students. Results: Feedback from students reflected that the needs and expectations of students vary with academic phase. In addition students expressed that this program series inculcated some positive skills, and overall, they are satisfied with the utility of the program. Conclusion: Personal and professional enhancement of students in accordance with individual needs as well as with expected requirements needs a committed administrative action plan. Our results in this context are encouraging and can be considered for application in dental institutions.

Synthesis, Characterisation and Antimicrobial Evaluation of Chalcone Coupled Biscoumarin Copolyesters

Narendran Kandaswamy 한국고분자학회 2019 Macromolecular Research Vol.27 No.6

A series of three random copolyesters comprising biscoumarin and chalcone units as prime monomers, spaced with aliphatic alkyl chains of varying methylene units and 4,4′-oxydibenzoate, was synthesized and characterised by FTIR, NMR, TGA, DSC and XRD. The antimicrobial activity of the copolyesters was studied using Agar disc diffusion and broth dilution assay. The inhibitory effects of copolyesters were higher for Gram positive than Gram negative bacteria. All the copolyesters exhibited appreciable antimicrobial activity. In particular, copolyester 4c, poly(biscoumarin- 4,4’-oxydibenzoate-3-methoxychalcone) exhibited highest inhibition zone range of 19±0.39 mm for Bacillus subtilis, 20±0.51mm for Staphylococcus aureus and 20±0.22 mm for Staphylococcus epidermidis. Bacillus subtilis was more sensitive towards copolyester 4c exhibiting a minimum inhibitory concentration of 39.05 μg/mL. Chalcone coupled biscoumarin copolyester presented good antimicrobial activities comparable with those of standard antimicrobial agents, Chloramphenicol and Amphotericin-B. Thus the incorporation of biscoumarin and chalcone units in the polymer chain exhibit very good antimicrobial activity against gram positive bacterial and fungal strains.

Quantitative Assessment of Hand Dysfunction in Patients with Early Parkinson’s Disease and Focal Hand Dystonia

        Deepa Kandaswamy,MuthuKumar M,Mathew Alexander,Krishna Prabhu,Mahasampath Gowri S,Srinivasa Babu Krothapalli 대한파킨슨병및이상운동질환학회 2018 Journal Of Movement Disorders Vol.11 No.1

Objective Motor impairments related to hand function are common symptoms in patients with movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease (PD) and focal hand dystonia (FHD). However, hand dysfunction has not been quantitatively assessed as a clinical tool for screening patient groups from healthy controls (HCs). The aim of our study was 1) to quantitatively assess hand dysfunction in patients with PD and FHD and its usefulness as a screening tool 2) to grade disease severity in PD and FHD based on hand dysfunction. Methods The current case-control study included HCs (n = 50) and patients with known history of PD (n = 25) or FHD (n = 16). Hand function was assessed by a precision grip task while participants lifted objects of 1.3 N and 1.7 N under dry skin conditions, followed by very wet skin conditions (VWSCs). Receiver operating characteristic and summative scoring analyses were performed. Results In PD, the combination of loading phase duration and lifting phase duration at quantitative cutoffs of 0.36 and 0.74 seconds identified 21/25 patients as diseased and 49/50 subjects as HCs with 1.7 N under VWSCs. In PD, 5/21 was graded as “mild” and 16/21 as “moderate cases.” In FHD, slip force at a cutoff of 1.2 N identified 13/16 patients as diseased and 41/50 subjects as HC with 1.7 N under VWSCs, but disease severity could not be graded. Conclusion Our results demonstrate the use of precision grip task as an important clinical tool in assessment of hand dysfunction in movement disorder patients. Use of quantitative cutoffs may improve diagnostic accuracy and serve as a valuable adjunct to existing clinical assessment methods.

NATURAL CONVECTION OF WATER IN AN INCLINED CAVITY WITH HEAT GENERATION

        Sundaravadivelu, K.,Kandaswamy, P. 한국전산응용수학회 2003 Journal of applied mathematics & informatics Vol.12 No.1

The convection of water is investigated in the vicinity of its density maximum temperature (277 K) in an inclined square cavity in the presence of heat sources. Numerical investigations are carried out by maintaining one of the vertical walls uniformly at 273 K and varying the other wall between temperatures 275 K and 285 K at different inclinations angles. The isotherms, streamlines and velocity profiles reveal the possible existence of multicellular fluid motions, and bidirectional velocity distributions. These fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are significantly modified by the cavity inclination in the presence of heat sources.

THE HYDROMAGNETIC FLOW BETWEEN ECCENTRIC CYLINDERS WITH VELOCITY SLIP AT THE CYLINDER WALLS

        Meena, S.,Kandaswamy, P. 한국전산응용수학회 1999 Journal of applied mathematics & informatics Vol.6 No.2

The hydrodynamic flow between two eccentric cylinders is examined for small values of modified Reynolds number porosity parameter and the non-dimensional slip velocity parameter in the presence of a radial magnetic field. The stream function and the pres-sure distribution are calculated and the results are presented graph-ically.

Endodontic management of a mandibular second molar with radix entomolaris: a case report

Hannah, Rosaline,Kandaswamy, Deivanayagam,Jayaprakash, Nachimuthu The Korean Academy of Conservative Dentistry 2014 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.39 No.2

The presence of radix entomolaris (RE) in a mandibular first molar is a common occurrence in certain ethnic groups, but the presence of RE in a mandibular second molar is a rare occurrence. In the present case, RE was identified from preoperative radiographs and confirmed using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The access cavity was modified to locate the RE. Cleaning and shaping were performed with nickel-titanium rotary instruments. Obturation was completed with gutta-percha cones using AH Plus (Dentsply Detrey GmbH) as sealer. From the CBCT axial images, the RE was determined to have a Type III curvature by the De Moor classification, Type B separate RE by the Carlsen and Alexandersen classification, and radiographically, a Type i image by the Wang classification. The presence of RE in the mandibular second molar makes it essential to anticipate and treat the distolingual root canal. This case report highlights the usefulness of CBCT for assessing RE in the mandibular second molar, which can help the clinician in making a confirmatory diagnosis and assessing the morphology of the root canal.

Lie group analysis of radiation natural convection heat transfer past an inclined porous surface

        이진호,P. Kandaswamy,M. Bhuvaneswari,시바산카란 대한기계학회 2008 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.22 No.9

Natural convection heat transfer fluid flow past an inclined plate embedded in a fluid-saturated porous medium is investigated by Lie group analysis. The governing partial differential equations are reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations by the scaling symmetries. From numerical results, it is found that the thermal and momentum boundary layer thicknesses are increased as the radiation parameter is increased. Also, it is observed that the velocity is increased and the temperature is decreased for increasing the buoyancy parameter and the porosity parameter.

Folded Architecture for Digital Gammatone Filter Used in Speech Processor of Cochlear Implant

        Rajalakshmi Karuppuswamy,Kandaswamy Arumugam,Swathi Priya M 한국전자통신연구원 2013 ETRI Journal Vol.35 No.4

Emerging trends in the area of digital very large scale integration (VLSI) signal processing can lead to a reduction in the cost of the cochlear implant. Digital signal processing algorithms are repetitively used in speech processors for filtering and encoding operations. The critical paths in these algorithms limit the performance of the speech processors. These algorithms must be transformed to accommodate processors designed to be high speed and have less area and low power. This can be realized by basing the design of the auditory filter banks for the processors on digital VLSI signal processing concepts. By applying a folding algorithm to the second-order digital gammatone filter (GTF), the number of multipliers is reduced from five to one and the number of adders is reduced from three to one, without changing the characteristics of the filter. Folded second-order filter sections are cascaded with three similar structures to realize the eighth-order digital GTF whose response is a close match to the human cochlea response. The silicon area is reduced from twenty to four multipliers and from twelve to four adders by using the folding architecture.
