        Urosepsis and postrenal acute renal failure in a neonate following circumcision with Plastibell device

        Plastibell is one of the three most common devices used for neonatal circumcision in the United States, with a complication rate as low as 1.8%. The Plastibell circumcision device is commonly used under local anesthesia for religious circumcision in male neonates, because of cosmetic reasons and ease of use. Occasionally, instead of falling off, the device may get buried under the skin along the shaft of the penis, thereby obstructing the normal flow of urine. Furthermore, the foreskin of neonates is highly vascularized, and hence, hemorrhage and infection are possible when the skin is cut. Necrosis of penile skin, followed by urethral obstruction and renal failure, is a serious surgical mishap requiring immediate corrective surgery and medical attention. We report a case of fulminant urosepsis, acute renal failure, and pyelonephritis in a 4-day-old male neonate secondary to impaction of a Plastibell circumcision device. Immediate medical management was initiated with fluid resuscitation and mechanical ventilation; thereby correcting life threatening complications. Pediatricians and Emergency Department physicians should be cognizant of the complications from Plastibell circumcision device in order to institute appropriate and timely management in neonates.

        A single server infinite capacity queueing system with Poisson arrival and a general service time distribution along with repeated attempt and server vacation is considered. We made a comprehensive analysis of the system including ergodicity and limiting behaviour. Some operating characteristics are derived and numerical results are presented to test the feasibility of the queueing model.

        Development of ZnS/SnS/A-FA nanorods at ambient temperature: Binary catalyst for the removal of congo red dye and pathogenic bacteria from wastewater

        The present work is emphasized to develop novel ZnS/SnS/A-FA nanorods by using A-FA, ZnNO3 6H2O,SnCl2 2H2O and Na2S as precursor materials at ambient temperature. UV–vis DRS, PL, FE-SEM, EDX andTEM techniques were employed to confirm the formation of ZnS/SnS/A-FA nanorods. Photocatalyticactivity of the ZnS/SnS/A-FA catalyst was checked under UV light using congo red dye as a modelpollutant for waste water treatment applications. The results indicate that thefly ash incorporated ZnS/SnS have the capability to degrade the congo red dye within 150 min using 10 mg of the photocatalyst. Thereuse property of ZnS/SnS/A-FA catalyst was appraised and was found to be quite stable duringphotocatalytic experiments. The pioneer antibacterial properties of ZnS/SnS/A-FA nanostructures werestudied against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli),which shows a significant antibacterial activity compared to ZnS/A-FA. ZnS/SnS/A-FA was proved as apotential material toward the wastewater treatment for the removal of dye molecules and pathogenicbacteria

        Study of Multiple Phonon Behavior in Li-doped ZnO Thin Films Fabricated Using the Sol-gel Spin-coating Technique

        Undoped and lithium-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films have been deposited on sapphire substrates (0001) using the sol-gel method. The effect of doping with various percentages of Li ata particular annealing temperature of 600 ℃ is studied. The samples are characterized using Xray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), micro-photoluminescence (μ-PL) and Raman and polarized Raman (PR) spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction and micro-Raman spectroscopy confirm the presence of lithium substitution for zinc. The wurtzite structure of the lattice is retained, and five multiple phonon Raman modes are observed. The values of the depolarization ratios are calculated from polarized Raman data. Photoluminescence shows a strong emission peak in the near UV at 3.276 eV and negligible visible emission. The PL peak positions in the doped samples nearly coincide with each other, suggesting very similar recombination mechanisms in the nanocrystals.

        Studies on enhancing the biodegradation of tannins by ozonation and Fenton’s oxidation process

        Tannins are used in vegetable tanning and re-tanning processes. The biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) to chemical oxygen demand (COD) ratio of 0.196 indicated that tannins are recalcitrant and persistent. Ozonation as pre-treatment resulted in 20% and 49% of COD and total phenol removal due to mineralization and the BOD5/COD ratio increased to 0.298. Fenton’s reagent pre-treatment resulted in 51% and 85% reduction of COD and phenol removal due to mineralization, with subsequent improvement in BOD5/COD ratio from 0.196 to 0.443. Wastewater pre-treated with Fenton’s reagent resulted in BOD5 and COD of 26 and 210 mg/L in the aerobic treated final effluent.

        Optimum design of FRP box-girder bridges

        Light weight superstructure is beneficial for bridges in remote areas and in emergency erection. In such weight sensitive applications, combination of fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) as material and box-girders as a structural system have great scope. This combination offers various options to tailor structure and its elements but this flexibility poses greater challenge in optimum design. In this paper a procedure is derived for a generalised optimum design of FRP box-girder bridges, using genetic algorithms (GA). The formulation of the optimum design problem in the form of objective function and constraints is presented. Size, configuration and topology optimization are done simultaneously. A few optimum design studies are carried out to check the performance of the developed procedure and to get trends in the optimum design which will be helpful to the new designers.

        Marguerre shell type secant matrices for the postbuckling analysis of thin, shallow composite shells

        The postbuckling behaviour of thin shells has fascinated researchers because the theoretical prediction and their experimental verification are often different. In reality, shell panels possess small imperfections and these can cause large reduction in static buckling strength. This is more relevant in thin laminated composite shells. To study the postbuckling behaviour of thin, imperfect laminated composite shells using finite elements, explicit incremental or secant matrices have been presented in this paper. These incremental matrices which are derived using Marguerre's shallow shell theory can be used in combination with any thin plate/shell finite element (Classical Laminated Plate Theory - CLPT) and can be easily extended to the First Order Shear deformation Theory (FOST). The advantage of the present formulation is that it involves no numerical approximation in forming total potential energy of the shell during large deformations as opposed to earlier approximate formulations published in the literature. The initial imperfection in shells could be modeled by simply adjusting the ordinate of the shell forms. The present formulation is very easy to implement in any existing finite element codes. The secant matrices presented in this paper are shown to be very accurate in tracing the postbuckling behaviour of thin isotropic and laminated composite shells with general initial imperfections.

        CEO Education-Performance Relationship: Evidence from Saudi Arabia

        The study investigates the association between CEO education and firm performance with a sample of 85 nonfinancial firms listed on the Saudi stock exchange during 2018 applying ordinary least squares method. CEO education is defined by three variables, the level of education, if the degree-granting institution is domestic or foreign, and if the highest degree is in management or other fields of study. Financial performance is measured by return on assets and return on equity. Firm size, age, liquidity and growth are introduced as control variables. The study shows that 58 CEOs of the firms studied are graduates, 38 have obtained their degree from a domestic institution and 44 have a management degree. Graduate CEOs are found to enhance performance. Graduating from a domestic institution influences performance positively. Management degree of CEO does not seem to impact performance. Firm size, liquidity and growth are positively associated with performance. Firm age does not explain performance differences of firms. Results are robust to performance measures. The findings of the study suggest that firms can benefit from a CEO hiring policy that emphasizes on the minimum qualification set as graduation or higher, education from a domestic institution and no undue weight on management qualification.
