Diabetes is the leading cause of chronic renal failure. Our purpose was to determine the effects of N-nitro-l-arginine (l-NNA) and an extract of Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) (SrB) leaves on renal function in streptozotocin-nicotinamide (STZ-NA)–induced diabetic rats. Rats were divided into seven groups. Three of these groups were controls. Diabetes was induced by STZ-NA in the other four. Diabetic rats were treated with SrB (200 mg/kg), _L-NNA (100 mg/kg), or SrB + _L-NNA for 15 days after 5–8 weeks of diabetes. At the end of the experiments, urine and blood samples were collected from the rats, and kidney tissue samples were collected with the animals under ether anesthesia. Renal filtration changes were determined by measuring urine pH, urine volume, and serum and urine creatinine. Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity was measured in kidney homogenates. Alterations in kidney ultrastructure were determined by electron microscopy, and histological changes were examined by hematoxylin and eosin staining. No statistical differences were observed in urine creatinine or creatinine clearance. Even so, we observed higher NOS activity in SrB-treated diabetic rats. SrB-treated diabetic rats had less mitochondrial swelling and vacuolization in thin kidney sections than other diabetic groups. The control groups showed normal histological structure, whereas in the diabetic groups, membrane thickening, tubular epithelial cells, and cellular degeneration were observed. Thus, SrB has beneficial effects on diabetes compared with _L-NNA. Our results support the validity of SrB for the management of diabetes as well as diabetes-induced renal disorders.

Aim: To evaluate efficacy and tolerability of topotecan treatment for recurrent small cell lung carcinoma. Patients and Methods: A total of 62 patients were evaluated retrospectively. Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Instat (version 3.05). Results: DFifty five of patients (89%) were male and 7 (11%) were female. Median age was $56.7{\pm}9.3$ (34-75). Forty eight of patients (80%) were extensive stage (ES) at the time of diagnosis. Fifty of the patients (80.6 Medical Oncology Clinic) were given median 5.36 cycles of cisplatin-etoposide (2-8 cycles). Time to recurrence was $15.6{\pm}6.13$ weeks in patients with limited stage (LS) and $6.3{\pm}3.82$ weeks in extensive stage (ES) (p<0.0001). Overall survival was $14.0{\pm}6.08$ months in ES and $17.9{\pm}6.88$ months in LS. The difference between two groups was statistically meaningful (p=0.0447). The overall survival of the patients was $14.8{\pm}6.43$ months (4.5-40 months). In terms of survival, there was no difference between males and females (p=0.1171). In 17 (27%) patients who were refractory to topotecan or in whom progression occurred other chemotherapies were used. Conclusion: Small cell lung cancer is chemosensitive, but recurrences occur in short time. Other chemotherapy regimens are used in progression. Topotecan is one of them. Patients who were young and in whom recurrences occur late had given better response to topotecan. Because of the retrospective nature of the study, we couldn't reach the records exactly and consequently, rate and duration of response couldn't be calculated. In recurrent SCLC topotecan is one of the treatment choices. But both hematological and non hematological side effects should be taken into consideration.

Background: Elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels in adults are considered abnormal. This parameter is used mostly in the diagnosis and follow-up of hepatocellular carcinomas and yolk sac tumors. Among the other rare tumors accompanied with elevated serum AFP levels, gastric cancer is the most common. In this study, we evaluated the follow-up and comparison of the treatment and marker response of patients with metastatic gastric cancer who had elevated serum AFP levels. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective study, including all consecutive patients with advanced gastric cancer, who received systemic chemotherapy with elevated AFP level. Results: Seventeen metastatic gastric cancer patients with elevated AFP levels at the time of diagnosis were evaluated. Fourteen (82.4%) were males and three (17.6%) were females. The primary tumor localization was the gastric body in 8 (76.4%), cardia in 7 (41.2%), and antrum in 2 (11.8%). Hepatic metastasis was observed in 13 (76.4%) at the time of diagnosis. When the relationship of AFP levels and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) response of the patients with their radiologic responses was evaluated, it was found that the radiologic response was compatible with AFP response in 16 (94.1%) patients and with CEA response in 12 (70.6%); however, in 5 (29.4%) patients no accordance was observed between radiological and CEA responses. Conclusions: Follow-up of AFP levels in metastatic gastric cancer patients with elevated AFP levels may allow prediction of early treatment response and could be more useful than the CEA marker for follow-up in response evaluation.

This paper presents the design of a proportionalintegral-derivative (PID) control algorithm for the electric power steering system (EPS) for a selfdriving car. The system comprises of a steering rack with a brushless direct current (BLDC) motor as an actuator, utilizing the six-step trapezoidal as commutation method. To observe the electrical and mechanical model of the EPS, an identification system is employed. The results show that the PID control algorithm provides a stable and accurate steering response met the design criterion.
Mobile Phone-based Real-time Dangerous Object Recognition for the Visually Impaired
Seungbin Kim,Hartono Rodi,Tshibang Patrick A Kalend,Namkyun Baik,Kyoo Jae Shin 대한전자공학회 2023 IEIE Transactions on Smart Processing & Computing Vol.12 No.2
This paper proposes a dangerous object recognition Android application for the visually impaired using a smartphone. Among the one-stage and two-stage detectors, which are representative object recognition methods, the one-stage method is more suitable for real-time object recognition. Among them, more accurate object recognition is possible using the SSD network. In addition, the visually impaired cannot see the screen or the front properly in their daily life, so it informs them of dangerous situations in advance through sound. The system helps the visually impaired using a priority queue that notifies the visually impaired with a different sound according to a high-priority object. The experiment results of the proposed system are expected to bring positive results when applied to the smartphones of visually impaired people.
