This experiment was designed to investigate the optimum temperature of phosphorous uptake in barley plants, and the absorption actvity of young and old roots by using radioisotope p^32. The results obtained were as follows. 1.The absorption of p^32 was increased gradually by raising temerature, reached to maximum amounts at 25℃, but decrease above 25℃. 2.The increase tendencies of absorption by roots and the transference to stem were seemed to be same but the amounts of transference was remar kably decreased above 25℃. 3.The specific activity (cpm/gr.)of p^32 was lower in the barley plants with the the only young roots than that of the barley from which the old roots were not removed. So it seemed that the old roots were more concerned with phosphorous absorption than the young roots.

Insufficient pre-slaughter fasting leaves serious amount of feed-like contents(designated here as un-fasted stomach spent feed, USSF) in the eviscerated pig stomach. This study was intended to evoke economical and environmental seriousness of USSF discharge by estimating its value as pig feed. For finishing pigs feeding trial, three levels(0, 5, and 10%) of USSF were blended with pig feed to prepare control and two treatment diets, respectively. A total of 42(21 males, 21 females) crossbred (Landrace× Yorkshire×Duroc) finishing pigs weighing 81.5±8.0kg were employed to 28d feeding trial and in vivo digestibility trial by Cr2O3 indicator method with 7 males and 7 female pigs per treatment. In vitro total tract digestion of USSF showed 70.5% and 57.6% of DM and OM digestibilities, respectively which were poorer(p<0.05) than those of pig diet. There were no differences in body weight gain, daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio among treatments although 10% USSF substitution exerted relatively poor performance. In vivo apparent digestibilities of diets containing USSF 5% and 10% were lower(p<0.05) than that of 100% pig feed. There were no differences(p>0.05) in dressing percentage and carcass grade among treatments. Results of this study showed that 5% USSF substitution in finishing pigs diet did not exert any disadvantage in terms of production performance and carcass grade. This study implied that un-fasted slaughter causing excessive excretion of USSF should be avoided. If not avoidable, the USSF should not be wasted in abattoir but could be recycled as pig feed.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A 12-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of multi-strain probiotics (MSP) in a low fish meal (FM) diet on overall performance, gut microbiota, selected non-specific immune responses and antioxidant enzyme activities of olive flounder (<I>Paralichthys olivaceus</I>) juveniles. A total of 225 healthy olive flounders (initial mean body weight, 13.5 ± 0.01 g) were randomly separated into 3 groups of 75 fish, each group having three replicates of 25 fish; first group was fed with a FM-based control diet (Con), 2nd group was fed with a low-FM diet containing a blend of plant and animal protein meals replacing 30% of the FM protein (FM30), and 3rd group was fed with the FM30 diet supplemented with 108–109 CFU kg−1 of the MSP (Pro). With the exception of lipid retention, which was significantly lower in fish fed the FM30 diet compared to the other two treatments, no other statistically significant differences were recorded with respect to any of the other growth and nutrient utilization parameters. Myeloperoxidase and lysozyme activities of fish fed the Pro diet were much higher and significantly different than those of fish fed the FM30 diet. Glutathione peroxidase activity was significantly higher in Pro- than in Con-fed fish, which, in turn, was significantly higher than FM30-fed fish. Expression of immune-related genes including IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α was markedly upregulated in livers of the fish fed Pro diet compared to those fed the Con and FM30 diets. Furthermore, supplementation of MSP in FM30 diet enriched the <I>Lactobacillus</I> abundance in the fish gut as well as predictive gene functions in relation to lipid and carbohydrate metabolisms. These data suggested that the MSP could reduce the potential adverse effects of the low-FM diet and might be used as a healthy immunostimulant for olive flounder.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Low fishmeal diet (FM30) significantly affected the lipid retention of olive flounder. </LI> <LI> The multi-strain probiotics (MSP) improved the activities of myeloperoxidase, lysozyme, and glutathione peroxidase. </LI> <LI> The MSP supplement markedly upregulated the immune-related gene expression of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α in the liver. </LI> <LI> The MSP supplement enriched the predictive gene functions in relation to lipid and carbohydrate metabolisms. </LI> <LI> The MSP could be used as a healthy immunostimulant for olive flounder. </LI> </UL> </P>
