      • Electroacoustic Music and the Sounding Body

        전기가 일상화되기 이전 시기, 음악의 경계는 일반적으로 명료했다. 오늘날, 우리의 음악 경계선은 뮤직테크놀로지를 통해 확장되어 음악은 더이상 물리적 행위의 결과로만 남아있지 않다. 신체에 독점적으로 기반한 음악이 더이상 아니다. 지금, 우리는 인간 신체의 한계를 뛰어넘는 초현식적인 음악적 색채을 누리고 있다. 또한 알고리듬으로 자동으로 만들어지는 생성 음악 <SUB>generative music</SUB> 도 갖고 있다. 더욱이, 녹음 기술의 편재로 일상의 소리와 음악적 소리 간의 구분도 갈수록 혼란스러워진다. 한 세기 전만해도 상상할 수 없었던 소리 세계가 그 결과이다. 여기서 저자는 이러한 새로운 비신체적 음악 소리를 경험하는 것이 기존의 신체 행위에 보다 견고하게 기반한 어쿠스틱 사운드를 청취하는 것과 어떻게 그리고 어떠한 이유로 달라질 것인가에 대해 연구한다. In the time before mains electricity was common, the boundaries of music were generally clear. Today, our musical horizons are expanded through music technology and music is no longer solely the product of physical gestures. No longer is music rooted exclusively in the body. Now, we have musical timbres that are otherworldly and that exceed the limitations of the human body. We also have generative music, made entirely by algorithm. Further, because of the ubiquity of recording technology, the distinction between everyday sounds and those of music has become increasingly muddled. The result is a sound world that would have been unimaginable only a century ago. Here I explore how and why our experiences of these newer non-body musical sounds might be different from those arising from traditional acoustic practices, which are more firmly rooted in physical gesture.

        Electrostatic Force Microscopic Characterization of Early Stage Carbon Deposition on Nickel Anodes in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

        <P>Carbon deposition on nickel anodes degrades the performance of solid oxide fuel cells that utilize hydrocarbon fuels. Nickel anodes with BaO nanoclusters deposited on the surface exhibit improved performance by delaying carbon deposition (i.e., coking). The goal of this research was to visualize early stage deposition of carbon on nickel surface and to identify the role BaO nanoclusters play in coking resistance. Electrostatic force microscopy was employed to spatially map carbon deposition on nickel foils patterned with BaO nanoclusters. Image analysis reveals that upon propane exposure initial carbon deposition occurs on the Ni surface at a distance from the BaO features. With continued exposure, carbon deposits penetrate into the BaO-modified regions. After extended exposure, carbon accumulates on and covers BaO.       • SIMPLIFICATION OF THE PHOTOCATALYST COATING BY SOL-GEL METHOD AND HYDROTHERMAL METHOD FOR THE INHIBITION OF BACTERIA AND FUNGI

        Photocatalysts are widely used via sol-gel and hydrothermal methods to coat surfaces such as windows and solar panels because of their ability to prevent microorganism growth. Although these methods are effective, they are sophisticated and costly. Thus, the focus of this research was to find a simple, easily-reproducible coating method that successfully coats TiO2 on a panel. First, modifications of the sol-gel method were applied using compounds such as AgBr, PEG (Polyethylene Glycol), and ZnO and the crystal formation on the panels were compared. It was found that when ZnO was added to the mixture, the surface tension of the coated surface increased and PEG additionally helped reduce cracks on the surface of the panel. Also, a simplified version of the hydrothermal coating method was employed and was successful in coating the surface of glass and metal panels evenly using the precipitates that formed during the process. Instead of using pressure with ZnO, NaOH was used in order to coat the glass panels.Out of the metals that were coated, it was observed that ZnO coated best on the surface of zinc. Both methods demonstrated the ability of photocatalysts to degrade methylene blue and prevent bacterial and fungal growth.

      • Fabrication of Smooth Patterned Structures of Refractory Metals, Semiconductors, and Oxides via Template Stripping

        <P/><P>The template-stripping method can yield smooth patterned films without surface contamination. However, the process is typically limited to coinage metals such as silver and gold because other materials cannot be readily stripped from silicon templates due to strong adhesion. Herein, we report a more general template-stripping method that is applicable to a larger variety of materials, including refractory metals, semiconductors, and oxides. To address the adhesion issue, we introduce a thin gold layer between the template and the deposited materials. After peeling off the combined film from the template, the gold layer can be selectively removed via wet etching to reveal a smooth patterned structure of the desired material. Further, we demonstrate template-stripped multilayer structures that have potential applications for photovoltaics and solar absorbers. An entire patterned device, which can include a transparent conductor, semiconductor absorber, and back contact, can be fabricated. Since our approach can also produce many copies of the patterned structure with high fidelity by reusing the template, a low-cost and high-throughput process in micro- and nanofabrication is provided that is useful for electronics, plasmonics, and nanophotonics.</P>

        Visibility of Internal Target Volume of Dynamic Tumors in Free-breathing Cone-beam Computed Tomography for Image Guided Radiation Therapy

        Respiratory-induced dynamic tumors render free-breathing cone-beam computed tomography (FBCBCT) imageswith motion artifacts complicating the task of quantifying the internal target volume (ITV). The purpose of thispaper is to study the visibility of the revealed ITV when the imaging dose parameters, such as the kVp and mAs,are varied. The TrilogyTM linear accelerator with an On-Board Imaging (OBITM) system was used to acquirelow-imaging-dose-mode (LIDM: 110 kVp, 20 mA, 20 ms/frame) and high-imaging-dose-mode (HIDM: 125 kVp,80 mA, 25 ms/frame) FBCBCT images of a 3-cm diameter sphere (density=0.855 g/cm3) moving in accordanceto various sinusoidal breathing patterns, each with an unique inhalation-to-exhalation (I/E) ratio, amplitude, andperiod. In terms of image ITV contrast, there was a small overall average change of the ITV contrast when goingfrom HIDM to LIDM of 6.5±5.1% for all breathing patterns. As for the ITV visible volume measurements, therewas an insignificant difference between the ITV of both the LIDM- and HIDM-FBCBCT images with an averagedifference of 0.5±0.5%, for all cases, despite the large difference in the imaging dose (approximately five-folddifference of ~0.8 and 4 cGy/scan). That indicates that the ITV visibility is not very sensitive to changes in imagingdose. However, both of the FBCBCT consistently underestimated the true ITV dimensions by up to 34.8%irrespective of the imaging dose mode due to significant motion artifacts, and thus, this imaging technique isnot adequate to accurately visualize the ITV for image guidance. Due to the insignificant impact of imaging doseon ITV visibility, a plausible, alternative strategy would be to acquire more X-ray projections at the LIDM settingto allow 4DCBCT imaging to better define the ITV, and at the same time, maintain a reasonable imaging dose,i.e., comparable to a single HIDM-FBCBCT scan.

      • Fast Cyclic Square-Wave Voltammetry To Enhance Neurotransmitter Selectivity and Sensitivity

        <P>Although fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) has been widely used for in vivo neurochemical detection, the sensitivity and selectivity of the technique can be further improved. In this study, we develop fast cyclic square-wave voltammetry (FCSWV) as a novel voltammetric technique that combines large-amplitude cyclic square-wave voltammetry (CSWV) with background subtraction. A large-amplitude, square-shaped potential was applied to induce cycling through multiple redox reactions within a square pulse to increase sensitivity and selectivity when combined with a two-dimensional voltammogram. As a result, FCSWV was significantly more sensitive than FSCV (<I>n</I> = 5 electrodes, two-way ANOVA, <I>p</I> = 0.0002). In addition, FCSWV could differentiate dopamine from other catecholamines (e.g., epinephrine and norepinephrine) and serotonin better than conventional FSCV. With the confirmation that FCSWV did not influence local neuronal activity, despite the large amplitude of the square waveform, it could monitor electrically induced phasic changes in dopamine release in rat striatum before and after injecting nomifensine, a dopamine reuptake inhibitor.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        The Intersections of Peace Education and Global Citizenship Education: Some Theoretical Foundations and New Pedagogic Possibilities : 평화교육과 세계시민교육의 교차점: 이론적 고찰과 새로운 교육학적 가능성을 중심으로

        본 논문은 평화교육(Peace Education)과 세계시민교육(Global Citizenship Education)을 세계 평화 문화 함양에 기여하는 교육으로 바라보고, 두 분야의 교차점을 검토하였다. 본 논문은 다음과 같은 6가지 항목으로 구성되었다. 첫째, 20세기와 21세기 동안의 세계시민교육과 평화교육의 역사와 발전에 대해 간략하게 설명하였다. 둘째, 평화교육의 일부 공통 규범 문서들을 검토하여 세계시민교육 위한 평화교육의 교육 콘텐츠와 교육 방식을 탐구하였다. 셋째, 세계시민교육과 평화교육의 철학적 접근에 기여한 문화적 지향의 영향에 대해 논의하였다. 넷째, 세계시민교육과 관련된 평화교육의 역사, 철학, 그리고 개념을 교사와 교사 트레이너를 위한 실질적인 활동으로 바꿀 수 있는 방법을 설명하였다. 다섯째, 평화교육과 세계시민교육의 국제적인 성공사례 4가지를 제시한 후, 마지막으로 세계시민교육을 위한 평화교육의 새로운 교육학적 가능성에 대해 논의하였다. This paper examines the intersections of peace education (PE) and global citizenship education (GCED) as twin educational fields committed to the cultivation of a global culture of peace. The paper is organized in six sections. The first section outlines a brief history and evolution of GCED and PE in the 20th and 21st centuries. It then provides an overview of various contents and methods of peace education for GCED through examining some common normative documents in PE. Next, the paper discusses the influence of various cultural orientations on the different philosophical approaches to PE and GCED. Following this, the paper translates the history, philosophy, and concepts of PE and GCED into practical activities for teachers and teacher-trainers before reviewing four successful cases of PE around the world. The paper then concludes with a discussion of some new pedagogic possibilities emerging for PE and GCED.
