A new current pulse-width control for long-lived ZnSe-white LEDs is presented. Using the defect controlling technique together with high quality ZnSe white LED, it is proved that bright ZnSe white LEDs have exhibited long device life-time exceeding 20000 hrs for its in practical use. It is also evidenced that the present current pulse-width control is not limited in the ZnSe system, but very effective for other widegap semiconductor bright and long-live light emitting devices of GaN and ZnO.

<P>Differential cross sections at t = t(min) and decay asymmetries for the gamma p -> phi p reaction have been measured using linearly polarized photons in the range 1.5 to 2.9 GeV. These cross sections were used to determine the Pomeron strength factor. The cross sections and decay asymmetries are consistently described by the t-channel Pomeron and pseudoscalar exchange model in the E-gamma region above 2.37 GeV. In the lower energy region, an excess over the model prediction is observed in the energy dependence of the differential cross sections at t = t(min). This observation suggests that additional processes or interference effects between Pomeron exchange and other processes appear near the threshold region.</P>

Stratum Corneum Intercellular Lipid (SCL) plays a key role for the skin barrier function and investigation of its structure and function is crucial for the development of effective trans-dermal delivery of drugs and functional cosmetics. Primary constituents of SCL are simple equi-molar mixture of ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol, though there are multiple varieties of ceramides, fatty acids involved. In order to avoid such complexity of components, there are several model SCLs proposed to investigate the mechanism of percutaneous penetration. Even though, development of simple but relevant model with structural and functional resemblance to the real SCL is still of great importance for the advancement of skin barrier research. Here we propose novel and simple method to prepare model SCL useful to investigate how materials or formulations are interact with skin. After screening of various ceramides and fatty acids with cholesterol, we have chosen equi-molar combination of ceramide3 with oleoyl group, stearic acid and cholesterol as a model SCL. To be an appropriate model to study barrier function, structural uniformity of lamellar layers in the sample is indispensable. After various trials to prepare layered SCL structures including traditional Bangham method for the liposome preparation, we have established novel method for the preparation of model SCL. That is simply to mix three components to melt at 120 °C as clear solution. After quenching to 80 °C, acetate buffer with pH 5.5 is added to be 20 wt% hydrated SCL which is a normal water content as natural stratum corneum (SC). Despite of such a simple preparation method, resulted sample showed highly desirable properties as a model SCL, namely structural characteristics similar to SC by SAXS and DSC analysis and uniformly layered lamellar structure by EM observation. By using this model, interaction and translocation of model SCL to or through SC can be analyzed.

A marine engine system (MES) should be evaluated by not only reliability (R) but also maintainability (M) and manning index (MI), because this system can be recognised as a typical man-machine system. In 1977 at the first ICMES Conference in Paris one of the authors presented a total evaluation of the MES with the three indices, R, M, MI, proving the human ability of detecting faults and defects in this system. This paper describes how the MES has developed from the point of view of the above three indices during the past 30 years in Japan and its problems in the future, and arrives at the following conclusions : the reliability of the MES has developed due to quality control (QC) ; the maintainability of the MES has improved due to education and training ; the manning index of the MES has improved due to Rand M ; the availability of the MES has kept constant due to the decreasing complement onboard, at the rate of one person per year approximately ; and two esimations having the three indices were shown by the SRIC 1990 Data Base in Japan, for the two kinds of subsystems in the developed MES.
ICOSAHEDRAL CLUSTERS AND MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF LaCo₁₃ AMORPHOUS AND CRYSTALLINE ALLOYS
K. Fukamichi,A. Fujita,N. Ohashi,M. Hashimoto,E. Matsubara,Y. Waseda 한국자기학회 1995 韓國磁氣學會誌 Vol.5 No.5
The atomic structure and magnetic properties of LaCo₁₃ amorphous alloy have been investigated and compared with those of its crystalline counterpart. It has been confirmed that the amorphous alloy is composed of the icosahedral clusters with a NaZn₁₃-type structure. The magnetic moment and the spin-wave stiffness constant obtained from the magnetic measurements in the amorphous state are larger than those in the crystalline state. The Curie temperature estimated from the reduced magnetization curve for the former is much higher than the value for the latter. The localized magnetic moment character in the amorphous state is stronger than that in the crystalline state.
