Slope Movement Detection using Ubiquitous Sensor Network

Jung, Hoon,Kim, Jung-Yoon,Chang, Ki-Tae,Jung, Chun-Suk The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2009 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.4 No.1

About 70% of Korea consists of mountainous areas, and during the construction of many roads and railroads, cut slopes are inevitably formed. The rainy season, frost heaving in winter, and thawing in spring can all cause rockfalls and landslides. The failure of these slopes is increasing every year, causing damage to vehicles, personal injury and even death. To protect people and property from such damage, a real-time monitoring system is needed to detect the early stages of slope failures. The GMG placed TRS sensor units in the slopes to monitor them in real-time. But due to its reliance on data lines and power lines, the system is vulnerable to lightning damage. The whole system can be damaged by a single lighting strike. Consequently, for the purposes of this paper we propose the use of the Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) which follows the IEEE 802.1.4. By using the USN system we can minimize lightning damage and can monitor the movement of the slopes consistently.

A comprehensive review of difficult airway management strategies for patient safety

Jung Hoon 대한마취통증의학회 2023 Anesthesia and pain medicine Vol.18 No.4

Difficult airway management is critical to ensuring patient safety. It involves addressing the challenges and failures that can occur, even with skilled healthcare providers, during face mask ventilation, intubation, supraglottic airway placement, invasive airway procedures, or extubation. Although the incidence of the most critical situation in airway management, “cannot intubate, cannot oxygenate,” is low at 0.0019–0.04%, its occurrence can have severe consequences, including dental injury, airway injury, hypoxic brain damage, and even death. This study aimed to offer healthcare providers a comprehensive and evidence-based approach for difficult airway management by reviewing recent guidelines and incorporating the latest evidence-based practices to improve their preparedness and competence in difficult airway management, and thus ultimately contribute to improved patient safety.

      • Experimental Study on Combined Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion with Waste Heat of Power Plant

Jung, Hoon,Jo, Jongyoung,Chang, Junsung,Lee, Sanghyup Korea Electric Power Corporation 2019 KEPCO Journal on electric power and energy Vol.5 No.3

This work is experimental study of 10 kW specialized Combined Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion. We propose a C-OTEC technology that directly uses exhaust thermal energy from power station condensers to heat the working fluid (R134a), and tests the feasibility of such power station by designing, manufacturing, installing, and operating a 10 kW-pilot facility. Power generation status was monitored by using exhaust thermal energy from an existing power plant located on the east coast of the Korean peninsula, heat exchange with 300 kW of heat capacity, and a turbine, which can exceed enthalpy efficiency of 45%. Output of 8.5 kW at efficiency of 3.5% was monitored when the condenser temperature and seawater temperature are $29^{\circ}C$ and $7.5^{\circ}C$, respectively. The evaluation of the impact of large-capacity C-OTEC technology on power station confirmed the increased value of the technology on existing power generating equipment by improving output value and reducing hot waste water. Through the research result, the technical possibility of C-OTEC has been confirmed, and it is being conducted at 200 kW-class to gain economic feasibility. Based on the results, authors present an empirical study result on the 200 kW C-OTEC design and review the impact on power plant.

Vol.0 No.26

This paper looks at the political situations and foreign relations from the reign of King Geunguksu to the reign of King Gaero in Baekje. Through this, we review the trends of political forces (the kingdoms) in the Yeongsangang River basin. In this regard, Jar-coffin Tombs in the Yeongsangang River basin draw keen attention. The Jar-coffin Tombs have large mounds and are unique. And the gilt-bronze crown, which is enshrined in Tomb No. 9 in Sinchon-ri, Naju, is understood to be a symbol of the king. Also discovered in the Yeongsangang basin and made from the fourth to the early sixth century, the 30-40-meter-long ancient tombs say that a ruler existed in the area. In view of these points, there were independent political forces (the royal authority) in the Yeongsangang River basin that were not related to Baekje. On the other hand, the political trend of Baekje shows that there were political forces (the kingdoms) in the Yeongsangang River basin. In this regard, the geopolitical situation of Baekje is drawing attention. Baekje was bordered by Goguryeo to the north, Silla to the east, and the Yeongsangang River to the south, along with other kingdoms. Baekje was confronting hostile, or unfriendly, forces on both land borders from King Geungchogo to King Biyou. There was also a war between Goguryeo and Malgal, There was a clash with Silla, and there was a conflict with Chimmi Darye in the Yeongsan River basin during the reign of King Geungchogo. Baekje formed a friendly relationship with Silla during the reign of King Biyou. From that time, Baekje did not pay much attention to the southeastern border. However, the constant struggle over the throne, which lasted from the time of King Jinsa to the time of King Gaero, caused continued unrest within Baekje. Political Powers(kingdoms) along the Yeongsan River did not have to be very aware of the invasion due to Baekje's external relations and unstable internal affairs. What attracts attention is that Baekje was always tense with Goguryeo during the Hanseong period. This seriously affected Baekje's internal affairs. In this regard, the records of the King Asin and King Gaero are of great interest. The thing that was common to both the reigns of King Asin and King Gaero is that the tension with Goguryeo left the nation in poor finances and a weak national power.

      • Longitudinal Trend of Prevalence of Meeting Physical Activity Guidelines among Korean Adults

Junghoon Kim(Junghoon Kim) 사피엔시아 2017 Exercise Medicine Vol.1 No.-

OBJECTIVES: At present, almost nothing is known about longitudinal trends in the proportion of Korean adults meeting recommended guidelines for physical activity or the inter-related factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the longitudinal trends in how Korean adults met new guidelines for physical activity between 2008 and 2013 and to evaluate a range of factors that could have influenced these trends. METHODS: Analysis involved a dataset of 36,009 adults aged ≥20 years who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008-2013. The volume of physical activity and muscular activity were assessed using a self-reported questionnaire, and each domain of activity was characterized as being either low or high, based upon physical activity guidelines for Korean adults. RESULTS: Based on new physical activity guidelines, 22.0%, 26.6%, and 36.8% of Korean adults met the guideline requirements for moderate, vigorous, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, respectively; 21.8% adults met the requirements for muscular activity. The odds ratio for meeting the requirements of the physical activity guidelines was significantly lower in the elderly population, in females, and in participants with low income. Moreover, the longitudinal trend for meeting the guidelines for physical activity showed a significant reduction from 2008 to 2012. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the self-reporting questionnaire used in the present study showed that ~35% of Korean adults met the guidelines for physical activity. Furthermore, the longitudinal trend for meeting physical activity guidelines showed a significant reduction between 2008 and 2012. Finally, our findings showed that physical activity estimates for Korean adults vary substantially depending on socio-demographic characteristics.

      • Database Design for IoT-based Greenhouse Systems

        Chunghan Kang,Seulgi Yu,Junghoon Moon,Junghoon Moon 한국농식품정보과학회 2015 Agribusiness and Information Management Vol.7 No.2

Since 2000s, proper utilization of IoT (Internet of Things) technology is a key factor for a firm to become more competitive, and this stream is not exceptional for the food and agriculture industry. Along with this stream, Korea government organization, for example MAFRA (Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs), elected to adopt IoT technology, such as USN and RFID technologies, in the food and agriculture industry. Based on the IoT technology, MAFARA launched six “IoT based farm” project in 2007. IoT based farm project includes IoT based greenhouse system project, and it shows drastic efficiency in terms of cost reduction. When it comes to the productivity, however, the effect of IoT based greenhouse system is still ambiguous. In this regard, this study conducted systems analysis and design for IoT based tomato greenhouse in order to help farmers’ decision making related to the productivity by establishing standardized database structure and designing output form to analyze productivity indices. Proposed systems analysis and design can be utilized as a data analysis tools by farmers. Productivity data from the proposed systems is can be used by researchers to identify the relationship among environment, plant growth and productivity. Policy makers also can refer to the data and output forms to predict the quantity of fruit during certain period and to revise production guideline more precisely.

      • Substructure imaging of heterogeneous nanomaterials with enhanced refractive index contrast by using a functionalized tip in photoinduced force microscopy

Jahng, Junghoon,Yang, Heejae,Lee, Eun Seong Nature Publishing Group UK 2018 Light, science & applications Vol.7 No.1

        <▼1>
The opto-mechanical force response from light-illuminated nanoscale materials has been exploited in many tip-based imaging applications to characterize various heterogeneous nanostructures. Such a force can have two origins: thermal expansion and induced dipoles. The thermal expansion reflects the absorption of the material, which enables one to chemically characterize a material at the absorption resonance. The induced dipole interaction reflects the local refractive indices of the material underneath the tip, which is useful to characterize a material in the spectral region where no absorption resonance occurs, as in the infrared (IR)-inactive region. Unfortunately, the dipole force is relatively small, and the contrast is rarely discernible for most organic materials and biomaterials, which only show a small difference in refractive indices for their components. In this letter, we demonstrate that refractive index contrast can be greatly enhanced with the assistance of a functionalized tip. With the enhanced contrast, we can visualize the substructure of heterogeneous biomaterials, such as a polyacrylonitrile-nanocrystalline cellulose (PAN-NCC) nanofiber. From substructural visualization, we address the issue of the tensile strength of PAN-NCC fibers fabricated by several different mixing methods. Our understanding from the present study will open up a new opportunity to provide enhanced sensitivity for substructure mapping of nanobiomaterials, as well as local field mapping of photonic devices, such as surface polaritons on semiconductors, metals and van der Waals materials.
</▼1><▼2>
Photoinduced force microscopy: Enhanced sensitivity

Contamination of a scientific instrument is usually considered to be an undesirable outcome. However, researchers from Korea and Canada have now discovered that it can actually benefit an imaging technique called photoinduced force microscopy (PiFM). PiFM is a high-resolution scanning technique that is capable of mapping local refractive index contrast of a sample by measuring the light-induced force that arises between the sample and a closely-spaced tip. Junghoon Jang and coworkers from the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) and the University of British Columbia have now discovered that the presence of a small amount of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) contaminant on the tip can serve to functionalize it and significantly increase the strength of the sample-tip interaction. The team has shown that the functionalized tip can map the substructure of nanofibres of a biomaterial called polyacrylonitrile-nanocrystalline cellulose.
</▼2>
