      • Expression of taurine transporter (TauT) is modulated by heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) in motor neurons of ALS.

        <P>Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurological disorder characterized by progressive paralysis caused by the degeneration of motor neurons throughout the central nervous system. Mutations of the free radical scavenging enzyme Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) are a cause of familial ALS. In the present study, we demonstrated an age-dependent increase in taurine transporter (TauT) immunoreactivity in spinal cord motor neurons of ALS transgenic mice (mutant SOD1 (G93A)) and a similar increase in TauT in spinal motor neurons of patients with ALS. Chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis verified that heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) preferentially occupies the HSF1 binding element in the promoter of TauT under oxidative stress conditions. Knockdown of HSF1 by small interfering RNA reduced the transcriptional activity of TauT. Using [(3)H] taurine, we confirmed that an elevated expression of TauT directly contributes to increased taurine uptake in ALS motor neurons. In addition, we showed that taurine plays an antioxidant role and may prevent motor neuron loss due to oxidative stress in ALS. Our findings suggest that HSF1-induced TauT expression partially protects motor neurons by compensating for constitutive oxidative stress, which is thought to be a key mechanism contributing to the pathogenesis of ALS. Taken together, our results suggest that TauT is a novel pathological marker for stressed motor neurons in ALS and that modulation of TauT and taurine may slow neuronal degeneration in ALS.</P>

        A Critical Review of the Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities for the PROTECTION and Realization of the Right to Equality of Persons

        Purpose: This study prohibits discrimination against the disabled and, in order to correct it, based on the grand principle of guaranteeing the equal rights of the disabled and prohibiting discrimination, Revision of the Constitution for the substantial realization of equal rights in the direction of realizing practical equality, demand for protection and treatment in consideration of the obstacles to mandatory provision of legitimate convenience, It is required to prohibit discrimination against non-compliance, strengthen support for vocational competency development, prohibit direct/indirect discrimination, and protect basic living rights. Therefore, the purpose is to solve this problem Method: Based on the existing prior thesis, it is an attempt to compare and analyze the current law, previous studies, and foreign legislative cases, and to implement a new Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities. Results: The issues and improvement measures of the current Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities in Korea for the realization of equal rights for persons with disabilities were presented in three specific results. First, Amendment of the disabled related policy as the provisions for the basic principles in the constitution. Second, specific regulations on guaranteeing the right to equality of the disabled and prohibiting discrimination against disability Third, it is a right regulation for guaranteeing human life and social equality of the disabled. Conclusion: This study proposed alternatives to protecting the disabled and prohibiting discrimination against the disabled in the lack of legislation related to the prohibition of discrimination against the disabled and revising the Constitution to realize the right to equality for the disabled.

        Predicting Behavior Problems in Korean Preschoolers: Interactions of the SLC6A4 Gene and Maternal Negative Affectivity

        Objective: This study aimed to investigate whether maternal negative affectivity (MNA) moderates the effect of genetic polymorphism of SLC6A4 on behavior problems in children. Methods: Study participants comprised 143 preschoolers and their mothers from South Korea. The Childhood Behavior Checklist and Emotionality, Activity, and Sociability adult scale were used to measure child behavior and maternal affectivity. DNA from saliva was genotyped to determine serotonin transporter polymorphism. Results: MNA appeared to exert effects in externalizing (b =5.78, p<0.001) and internalizing problems (b =6.09, p< 0.001). Interaction between SLCA4 polymorphism and MNA showed effects on externalizing (b =−7.62, p<0.01) and internalizing problems (b =−9.77, p<0.01). Children with two short alleles showed considerable differences in both externalizing and internalizing problems according to MNA; however, children with one short allele or none showed relatively few differences in behavior problems due to maternal affectivity. Conclusion: The effect of SLC6A4 polymorphism on child behavior seemed to be moderated by MNA. In addition, the impact of MNA was found to vary based on a child’s genetic risk. High MNA may trigger the risk allele while low MNA causes the risk allele to illicit less behavior problems. Children with two short variants of the SLC6A4 gene may benefit from intervention that modulates MNA.

        CT characteristics of normal canine pulmonary arteries and evaluation of optimal contrast delivery methods in CT pulmonary angiography

        This study was performed to identify the normal anatomic orientation of pulmonary arteries and to obtain the normal baseline parameters and the optimal contrast material delivery methods of computed tomographic pulmonary angiography (CTPA) on normal beagle dogs. Based on the contrast injection flow rate, the contrast volume, and the administration methods, the experimental groups were divided into 4 groups such as group 1 : 2 ml/s, 3 ml/kg, and monophasic administration; group 2 : 5 ml/s, 3 ml/kg, and monophasic administration; group 3 : 5 ml/s, 4 ml/kg, and monophasic administration; group 4 : 5 ml/s and 2 ml/kg in first phase, 0.3 ml/s and 2 ml/kg in second phase, as biphasic administration. Normal anatomic orientation of pulmonary arteries in CTPA was evaluated through reformatted and 3D images after retro-reconstruction. Normal parameters for great arteries and peripheral pulmonary arteries were obtained on the factor of basement hounsfield unit (HU) values, contrast enhanced HU values, delay time, and peak time. And the optimal contrast delivery methods were evaluated on the factor of contrast enhanced HU values, image quality, and artifact. The monophasic administration with 5 ml/s contrast injection flow rate and 3 ml/kg contrast volume was optimal in canine CTPA.

        RFID 시스템을 위한 계층적 구조 기반의 리더 충돌 방지 알고리즘

        RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) 시스템에서는 다수의 리더들이 동시에 동일한 태그의 인식을 시도하는 경우 리더 충돌이 발생하게 된다. 이러한 리더 충돌은 RFID 시스템의 태그 인식 효율성 및 인식 속도를 저하시키는 주요 요인으로 작용하기 때문에 이를 방지할 수 있는 효과적인 리더 충돌 방지 알고리즘이 요구된다. 이에 본 논문에서는 리더 충돌을 방지하기 위해 관리 리더와 보조 리더로 구성된 계층적인 구조를 형성하고, 관리 리더가 보조 리더를 관리하여 리더 충돌을 방지하는 계층적 구조 기반의 리더 충돌 방지 알고리즘을 제안한다. 또한, 제안 알고리즘의 성능 평가를 위해 모의실험을 수행하였고, 리더 충돌 확률 및 태그 인식 시간 등에 대한 성능 분석을 수행하였다. In RFID system, reader collision happened when multiple readers try to read the tags at the same time. Because reader collision reduces tag recognition performance, it is required for RFID system to have reader anti-collision algorithm. In this paper, we propose reader anti-collision algorithm based on hierarchical structure, where a master reader controls the slave readers to avoid the reader collisions. It is verified through simulations that the proposed algorithm enhances the performance in terms of reader collision probability and tag reading time.

        IKK‐β‐mediated myeloid cell activation exacerbates inflammation and inhibits recovery after spinal cord injury

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is followed by massive infiltration and activation of myeloid cells such as neutrophils and macrophages, but the functions of these cells are controversial. In this study, our objective was to elucidate the in vivo role of a signaling pathway involved in activation of these innate immune cells in SCI using myeloid cell‐specific IκB kinase (IKK)‐β conditional knockout (<TEX>${\rm {ikk}}{\rm {\beta}}^{\Delta mye}$</TEX><IMG src='/wiley-blackwell_img/equation/tex2gif-ueqn-1.gif' alt ='equation image'/> ) mice. In these mice, the <I>ikk</I>β gene has been specifically deleted from myeloid cells, compromising their in vivo IKK/NF‐κB‐dependent activation. We found that <TEX>${\rm {ikk}}{\rm {\beta}}^{\Delta mye}$</TEX><IMG src='/wiley-blackwell_img/equation/tex2gif-ueqn-2.gif' alt ='equation image'/> mice had significantly reduced neutrophil and macrophage infiltrations after SCI compared to <I>ikk</I>β<SUP>+/+</SUP> controls. SCI‐induced proinflammatory gene expression was also reduced in <TEX>${\rm {ikk}}{\rm {\beta}}^{\Delta mye}$</TEX><IMG src='/wiley-blackwell_img/equation/tex2gif-ueqn-3.gif' alt ='equation image'/> mice. Reduced neuroinflammation in <TEX>${\rm {ikk}}{\rm {\beta}}^{\Delta mye}$</TEX><IMG src='/wiley-blackwell_img/equation/tex2gif-ueqn-4.gif' alt ='equation image'/> mice was accompanied by attenuated neuronal loss and behavioral deficits in motor activity. In addition, the SCI‐induced expression of CXC ligand 1 was reduced in <TEX>${\rm {ikk}}{\rm {\beta}}^{\Delta mye}$</TEX><IMG src='/wiley-blackwell_img/equation/tex2gif-ueqn-5.gif' alt ='equation image'/> mice, which may be responsible for the reduced neutrophil infiltration in these mice. Our data demonstrate that IKK‐β‐dependent myeloid cell activation potentiates neuroinflammation and neuronal damage after SCI.</P>

        Hematology and Serum Chemistry Values of Growing Miniature Pigs

        본 실험의 목표는 미니돼지에서 성성숙 전까지의 성장단계에서 혈액성분을 조사하는 것이다. 12마리 돼지를 이용하여 정맥에서 채혈하였다. 전혈과 혈청을 사용하여 혈액 및 혈액 화학치를 분석하였다. 그리고 성장단계별의 조사에서 각 성분은 평균과 표준편차로 나타내었다. 혈액분석에서 적혈구와 적혈구용적 그리고 혈소판에서 유의치 있는 변화가 있었다. 특히 적혈구와 적혈구용적은 4주령 군에서 가장 낮은 수치를, 반면에 혈소판은 4주령에서 가장 높은 수치를 보였다. 혈액 화학치에서는 glucose, GGT에서 유의치 있는 변화가 있었으며, 나머지 성분에서는 유의치 있는 변화가 없었다. 이러한 기본적인 혈액 및 혈액 화학치는 미니돼지의 정상 혈액학 연구와 그리고 성장단계별 이른 시기에 정상돼지를 판별하는데 유용하리라 생각된다. The purpose of this study was to establish blood reference values for miniature pigs from various growth ages before pre-puberty. 12 miniature pigs from two swine farms were sampled by jugular venipuncture. Routine hematological and biochemical determinations were performed using whole blood and serum. For the variables examined in each age group the means and the standard deviations were calculated. In hematological values, there are significant changes (p<0.05) in RBC, hematocrit and platelet values in each group. In RBC and hematocrit values, 4-week group shows the lowest level, whereas in platelet values, 4-week group shows the highest level. In biochemical values, there are significant chnges (p<0.05) in glucose and GGT in each group, and in other biochemical values there are no significant changes during growing periods. The values presented here may be useful for knowing the normal values for miniature pigs and also screening the normal pigs in the early days of their life and during the developemental stages.
