NEAR-IR POLARIMETRY AROUND 30 DORADUS: I. SEPARATION OF THE GALACTIC SOURCES

A $200'{\times}200'$ region around 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is observed and analyzed in the near-infrared. We obtain polarimetry data in the J, H, and Ks bands using the SIRIUS polarimeter SIRPOL at the Infrared Survey Facility 1.4 m telescope. We measure the Stokes parameters of 2562 point-like sources to derive the degree of polarization and the polarization position angles. We discuss the statistics of the groups classified by color-magnitude diagram and proper motions of the sources, in order to separate the Galactic foreground sources from those present in the LMC. We notice that groups classified by the proper motion data show a tendency towards different polarimetric properties.

The Effects of Dietary Counceling and Drug Treatment on the Serum Lipid Levels in Hyperlipidemic Patients

The purpose of this study was to develop the standardized manual for dietetic internship. The general information of the dietetic internship program in Korea was gathered and of dietetic internship(DI) in the USA was also surveyed. The existence of DI program manual, the number of the dietetic interns and length of the DI program, and other general information were investigated. At first, the questionnaire was developed and mailed to 130 hospitals in Korea and the number of returned questionnaires was 42 showing participating rate of 28%. Second, telephone survey was carried out and the number of response was 40 out of 46 participating rate of 87%. The results of this study were summarized as follow. 1. General informations of DI program in Korea: The hospital having a DI program was 31.7% and of them 14.6%(12 hospitals) have a manual developed by themselves. The number of dietetic intern per hospital was 2.0±1.4. The length of the program was from 3 to 12 months. Thirty nine percents(10 hospitals) have a food service program only and sixty three percents(16 hospitals) have both food service and clinical program. Seventy one percent(58 hospitals) of total hospital were willing to use the well developed standardized dietetic internship manual. 2. General information of DI program in the USA: Two hundred fifty nine hospitals had the DI program approved by ADA. The number of dietetic interns in each hospital was 10.6±6.3. The mean length of the program was 13.6±6.3 months. Twenty seven percents of the institution have a coordinated internship/masters degree program. The range of tuition for DI program was from $300 to 30,855(otherwise, dietetic interns were payed by the hospital in Korea). As a conclusion, the standardized DI program for the clinical dietitian as nutrition professionals to carry out their job at the hospitals should be developed. And the coordinated internship/masters degree program could be considered to improve the skill levels and job performances of clinical dietitian.

The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean college students' collocation ability of English synonymous verbs. The study focuses on how well Korean college students recognize the difference in collocation between these synonymous verbs. The subjects are a total of 33 college students. Four pairs of synonymous verbs were tested. The results are the following. First, the subjects' general English ability correlates positively with their collocation ability. Second, the rate of correct answer is in order of supply/provide(0.8283), achieve/fulfill(0.7121), mend/repair(0.7020), and extend/expand(0.6465). Third, as mentioned above, the mean scores of the pairs of synonymous verbs are not much different, but there was a big difference between the scores by questions. The subjects are 100% correct in the collocation of mend-washing machine, while they are only 30.30% correct in the collocation of achieve-balance. This means that Korean college students' collocation knowledge of these synonymous verbs are unbalanced.

Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of dietary counceling and drug therapy on the blood levels of lipids, lipoproteins, apolipoprotein, and Lp(a), atherogenic index, and coronary risk factor values. Study subjects consisted of 34 hyperlipidemic out-patients of Kyung Hee Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. Methods: Dietary counceling was carried out by the experienced nutritionist every 2 weeks for 3 monthes. Nutrient intakes were measured by 24-h recall method of 2 weekdays and one weekend through a personal interview. The patients were instructed to follow a hypolipidemic and hypocholesterolemic diets. Compliances were monitored through food diary and personal interviews. Results: The dietary patterns of the patients were changed, white meat and fish were substituted for fatty- and red-meat products; increased consumption of vegetables, legume, and fruits; reduced egg consumption; and avoid sweets and pastries. Compared with the basal diet, the aftered diets have less calories, fats, and cholesterol, and more complex carbohydrates and fiber. Serum triglyceride levels were decreased by 11% and 22% after dietary counceling and drug (simvastatin, 10㎎) threapy, respectively. After dietary counceling, the reductions in total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo A-I, Apo B were 5%, 7%, 4%, and 8%, respectively. After drug treatments, reductions in total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo B were 11%, 19%, and 17%, respectively. Serum HDL-choletserol was increased by 5% and 31% after dietary counceling and drug treatments, respectively. Serum Lp(a) was increased by 7% and 14% after dietary counceling and drug treatments, respectively. Atherogenic index was decreased by 12% and 36% after dietary counceling and drug treatments, respectively. Coronary risk factor value was decreased by 23% and 38% after dietary counseling and drug treatments, respectively. Conclusion: As a conclusion, dietary therapy should be done prior to drug therapy and concomittantly with drugs to treat hyperlipidemic patients. During the dietary counseling, the food habits and food selection patterns of the patients were changed, and the changes lead to a positive effect on serum lipid profiles. Retricting total daily calories and cholesterol through dietary counseling prior to drug therapy could be very effective to lower the serum triglyceride level. The drug thrapy showed the distinctive reductions in serum Mglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and Apo B levels. In addition, Coronary risk factors can be used with Atherogenic Index as a new hyperlipidmic risk index.

New or little known Carabina of Korea : Coleoptera, Carabidae 초시목

Two new species and six new subspecies of the Carabina belonging to the following genera (subgenera) are described and their taxonomic status is discussed: Carabus (Eucarabus), Lipaster (Morphocarabus), Eurycarabus (Tomocarabus) and Damaster (Acoptolabrus and Coptolabrus).

Lichen Amyloidosis 2 예

Lichen amyloidosis is a chronic, benign and relatively rare disease, but not infrequent in Korea. The patients with lichen amyloidosis visited to Dermatologic Department of Severance Hospital in 1969. The results of clinico-pathological findings observed in above patients were presented. Case 1-A 56 year old farmer has been suffered from pruritic lichenoid papules which developed in the right pretibial area for 10 years. These papules were reddish-brown in color, 1 to 2mm in. diameter and closely aggregated. The whole gross lesion measured 10 by 25 cm. Cases 2-A 32 year old obese house-wife complained of pruritic eruptions in the right pretibial area for 3 years. Shiny firm papules, measuring approximately 2 mm in diameter, were red in color and gross entire lesion was estimated to 7 by 10 cm. Histological examination by employing the stain method of crystal violet and the Nomland test demonstrated the amyloid mass in the papillary portion of dermis. All laboratory studies including complete blood count (CBC), chest X-ray, sedimentation rate, urinalysis (including test for Bence Jones protein), blood glucose, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum cholesterol, venereal disease research laboratories test for syphilis (VDRL), stool for occult blood, serum protein electrophoresis, electrocardiogram (ECG) and intravenous congo red test, were within normal limit. The therapeutic results were not promissing, however itching and lichenoid papules were disappeared during the treatment with steroid cream for occlussive dressing therapy.
