        Multiband antenna using a half-wavelength loaded line structure for mobile handheld systems

        <P>A novel multiband internal antenna is proposed, which can be applied for GSM(880–960 MHz), GPS(1575.42 MHz), DCS(1710–1880 MHz), PCS(1850–1990 MHz), and WCDMA(1920–2170 MHz) band mobile handheld systems, by using a half-wavelength loaded line structure (HWLLS). The proposed antenna is a combined structure of HWLLS and a shorted monopole. A gap is cut between the antenna shorting pad and the PCB ground plane of system. Then this gap is connected by a chip inductor in order to easily control the upper frequency bands, DCS, PCS, and WCDMA without degradation of resonant characteristics in the lower bands, GSM and GPS. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed antenna provides enough effective bandwidth (VSWR <2.5) to cover all five bands with the peak gain variation of less than 0.53 dB with varying the chip inductance of less than 3.3 nH. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.         Assessment of Position Degradation Due to Intermittent Broadcast of RTK MSM Correction Under Various Conditions

        GNSS has been evolving dramatically in recent years. There are currently 6 GNSS (4 GNSS, AND 2 RNSS) constellations, which are GPS (USA), GLONASS (Russia), BeiDou (China), Galileo (EU), QZSS (Japan), and IRNSS (India). The Number of navigation satellites is expected to be over 150 by 2020. As the number of both constellations and satellites used for the improvement of positioning performance, high accuracy, and robustness of precise positioning is more promising. However, a large amount of the correction messages is required to support the augmentation system for the available satellites of all the constellations. Since bandwidth for the correction messages is generally limited, sending or scheduling the correction messages might be a critical issue in the near future. In this study, we analyze the relationship between the size of the bandwidth and Real-Time Kinematics (RTK) performance. Multiple Signal Messages (MSM), the only Radio Technical Commission for Maritimes (RTCM) message that supports multi-constellation GNSS, has been used for this assessment. Instead of the conventional method that broadcasts all the messages at the same time, we assign the MSM broadcasting interval for each constellation in 5 seconds. An open sky static and dynamic test for this study was conducted on the roof of Sejong University. Our results show that the RTK fixed position accuracy is not affected by the 5-second interval corrections, but the ambiguity fixing rate is degraded for poor DOP cases when RTK correction are transmitted intermittently.

        A folded and bent internal loop antenna for GSM/DCS/PCS operation of mobile handset applications

        <P>A folded and bent internal loop antenna (FABILA) suitable for multiband operation is presented. The proposed antenna consists of a radiating element of the folded and bent loop structure with a rectangular stub, feeding post, shorting post, and dielectric supporter on the experimental PCB. A shorted half-wavelength loop element resonates at the lower-frequency band, and higher-band operation is achieved by two adjacent higher modes. Especially at the second higher-order mode, the rectangular stub compensates the strong imaginary part of the input impedance of the antenna efficiently, so that the antenna can provide enough bandwidth to cover the GSM (880–960 MHz), DCS (1710–1850 MHz), and PCS (1850–1990 MHz) bands. An IE3D simulator is employed to analyze the proposed antenna in the design process and to compare it with the experimental results. The measured peak gains of the proposed antenna are −0.2, 1.5, and 1.1 dBi for GSM, DCS, and PCS, respectively. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.         위성 DMB 중계기용 Cavity-Backed슬롯 배열 안테나

        This paper presents analysis of a slot array antenna having a low side lobe level and high front-to-back ratio for a repeater system of a satellite DMB(Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) service. Antennas for this repeater system require a high gain and enough isolation to reduce interferences between signals in system. Therefore, it is necessary to suppress a side lobe level and to increase front-to-back ratio. Unlike a structure 134 by lossy microstrip lines, in this work a single cavity-backed slot antenna array using a single waveguide feed is proposed to obtain the reliability for high power handling and high radiation efficiency. The side lobe level and front-to-back ratio are enhanced with tapered array technique and an optimized vertical reflector. The measured side lobe levels in H- and E-plane are under $-33.24\;\cal{dB}$ and $-35.78\;\cal{dB}$, respectively. The front-to-back ratio over $37.84\;\cal{dB}$, and the peak gain of over $17\;\cal{dBi}$ are measured.

        반파장 로디드 라인 구조를 이용한 이동 통신 단말기용 다중 대역 내장형 안테나 설계

        본 논문에서는 3중 대역 이상의 이동 통신 단말기를 위해 주파수 튜닝이 가능한 새로운 형태의 내장형 안테나를 제안하였다. 설계된 안테나의 동작 주파수 대역은 GSM(880${\~}$960 MHz)/GPS(1,575 $\pm$ 10 MHz)/DCS(1,710${\~}$1,880 MHz)/US-PCS(1,850${\~}$l,990 MHz)/W-CDMA(1,920${\~}$2,170 M/Hz) 대역을 포함한다. 제안된 안테나는 반파장 로디드 라인 구조와 모노폴 구조를 결합한 형태를 띄고 있으며 하나의 단락점과 급전점을 공유한다. 그리고 단락점과 접지면 사이의 집중형 인덕턴스 소자의 값을 조절함으로써 GSM과 GPS대역을 그대로 유지하면서 각각 DCS, US-PCS, W-CDMA대역을 만족시킬 수 있다. 사용된 인덕터 소자의 값은 주파수 튜닝에 따른 이득 저하를 최소화하기 위하여 최대 3.3 nH로 한정하였으며 이에 따른 안테나의 최대 이득은 GSM대역에서 -0.58${\~}$-0.30 dBi, GPS 대역에서 -0.57${\~}$0.43 dBi, DCS/US-PCS/W-CDMA 대역에서 0.38${\~}$l.15 dBi로 측정되었다. 시뮬레이션과 측정을 통해 제안된 안테나가 높은 주파수 대역에서 약 0.77 dB의 이득 변화 폭 내에서 약 240 MHz의 공진 주파수를 효과적으로 조절할 수 있음을 확인하였다. In this paper, novel internal antenna with its controllable resonant frequency is presented for triple-band or over mobile handsets. The operating range can include GSM(880${\~}$960 MHz), GPS(1,575$\pm$10 MHz), DCS(1,710${\~}$1,880 MHz), US-PCS(1,850${\~}$l,990 MHz), and W-CDMA(1,920${\~}$2,170 MHz). The proposed antenna is realized by combination of a half wavelength loaded line and a shorted monopole. A single shorting and feeding points are used and they are common to both antenna structures. By controlling a value of lumped inductance element between shorting point and ground plane, the antenna provides enough bandwidth to cover DCS, US-PCS, and W-CDMA respectively. When these higher bands are controlled by the values of inductance, resonant characteristics in GSM and GPS bands are maintained. In this work, maximum value of the inductor is limited within 3.3 nH to mitigate gain degradation from frequency tuning. As a result, measured maximum gain of antenna is -0.58${\~}$-0.30 dBi in the GSM band, -0.57${\~}$0.43 dBi in the GPS band and 0.38${\~}$1.15 dBi in the DCS/US-PCS/W-CDMA band. In higher band, the proposed antenna is certified that resonant frequency of about 240 MHz can be effectively controlled within gain variation of about 0.77 dB by simulation and measurement.

        공진 주파수와 입력 임피던스를 조절할 수 있는 변형된 반파장 로디드 라인 안테나 설계

        본 논문에서는 이동통신 단말기에 적합한 변형된 반 파장 로디드 라인 안테나를 설계 및 구현하였다. 제안된 안테나는 실험적인 PCB 위에 하나의 반 파장 로디드 라인 구조를 갖는 방사체, 유전체 기판, 급전봉과 두 개의 단락봉으로 구성되어져 있다. 두 개의 단락봉은 방사체의 양쪽 끝에 각각 배치되어 있으며, 집중형 인덕턴스 소자는 각각의 단락봉과 PCB 그라운드 사이에 놓여져 있다. 인덕터 값의 조절을 통하여 안테나의 공진 주파수와 입력 임피던스가 각각 조정되어질 수 있다. 제안된 안테나는 최대 12 nH의 인덕터 값의 범위 내에서 $1,470\~2,660\;MHz$의 넓은 동작 영역과 좋은 임피던스 정합 특성을 가지고 있다. 안테나의 최대 이득은 동작 영역내에서 $-0.45\~2.03\;dBi$로 측정되었다. A modified half wavelength loaded line antenna is designed and implemented for mobile terminal applications. The antenna is constructed with a radiating element of half wavelength loaded line structure, dielectric substrate, feeding post and two shorting posts on the experimental PCB. The shorting posts are located at each side of the radiating element and lumped inductance elements are on between each shorting post and ground of PCB. By controlling value of inductors, one can adjust resonant frequency and input impedance respectively. Within inductance value of 12 nH, the antenna can have wide operating range of $1,470\~2,660\;MHz$ and good impedance matching. The measured peak gains are between -0.45 dBi and 2.03 dBi for the operating band.

        Four-Element Reconfigurable Coupled Loop MIMO Antenna Featuring LTE Full-Band Operation for Metallic-Rimmed Smartphone

        <P>This paper describes a low-profile <TEX>$2\times 2$</TEX> multi-input multi-output (MIMO) antenna system that is fully functional over the entire long-term evolution (LTE) spectrum 699–960 MHz (lower frequency spectrum) and 1710–2690 MHz (higher frequency spectrum) that is applicable to real-life metallic smartphone platforms. The presented methodology entails utilizing the longitudinal edges of the ground plane amid an extremely narrow ground clearance of 2 mm. The metallic frame of the smartphone is utilized along with a stub network to devise a reconfigurable coupled loop antenna topology. The proposed <TEX>$2\times 2$</TEX> MIMO antenna configuration is measured and confirmed to exhibit efficient envelope correlation coefficient (<0.5) and one of the highest radiation efficiencies to be reported in the literature across the entire LTE spectrum.</P>

        <P>A novel UHF band RFID tag antenna, which can be effectively mounted on metallic objects, is presented. Using the inductively coupled feeding technique, the proposed antenna consists of two symmetric shorted radiating elements and feeding loop. The feeding loop is excited so that the currents on the radiating elements are out of phase with the equal amplitude.       • High-Efficiency Crossed-Loop 4G LTE Antenna for All Display Metal-Rimmed Smartphones

        <P>A symmetrically crossed-loop antenna featuring very high radiation efficiency across the entire LTE frequency bands for metal-rimmed smartphones with only 2 mm ground clearance is proposed, analyzed, and verified. The employment of even and odd modes is utilized to achieve wide bandwidth across 698-960 MHz (low-frequency spectrum), 1710-2170 MHz (middle-frequency spectrum), and 2300-2690 MHz (high-frequency spectrum). Empirical analysis confirms the crossed-loop topology results in a 180° phase shift of the electric current distribution on the ground plane, resulting in enhancement of the radiation resistance. As a result, the devised LTE antenna exhibits more than 48% to 75% total system efficiency across the entire band of interest, which is the highest efficiency reported in literature for metal-rimmed smartphones with extremely small ground clearance.</P>
