Assisting Authors to Convert Raw Products into Polished Prose

( Takumi Ito ),( Tatsuki Kuribayashi ),( Hayato Kobayashi ),( Ana Brassard ),( Masato Hagiwara ),( Jun Suzuki ),( Kentaro Inui ) 서울대학교 인지과학연구소 2020 Journal of Cognitive Science Vol.21 No.1

Being a notoriously complex problem, writing is generally decomposed into a series of subtasks: idea generation, expression, revision, etc. Given some goal, the author generates a set of ideas (brainstorming), which he integrates into some skeleton (outline, text plan, outline). This leads to a first draft which is submitted then for revision possibly yielding changes at various levels (content, structure, form). Having made a draft, authors usually revise, edit, and proofread their documents. We confine ourselves here only to academic writing, focusing on sentence production. While there has been quite some work on this topic, most writing assistance has mainly dealt with grammatical errors, editing and proofreading, the goal being the correction of surface-level problems such as typography, spelling, or grammatical errors. We broaden the scope by also including cases where the entire sentence needs to be rewritten in order to express properly all of the information planned. Hence, Sentence-level Revision (SentRev) becomes part of our writing assistance task. Obviously, systems performing well in this task can be of considerable help for inexperienced authors by producing fluent, well-formed sentences based on the user’s drafts. In order to evaluate our SentRev model, we have built a new, freely available crowdsourced evaluation dataset which consists of a set of incomplete sentences produced by nonnative writers paired with final version sentences extracted from published academic papers. We also used this dataset to establish baseline performance on SentRev.

Seasonal Change of Plasma Free Amino Acids with Special Reference to 3-Methylhistidine in Racehorses

Sawada, Kumiko,Li, Jun You,Kuribayashi, Yasuko,Itabashi, Hisao Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2008 Animal Bioscience Vol.21 No.12

Seasonal changes in the concentration of free amino acids were determined monthly in plasma from the jugular blood of 50 thoroughbred racehorses that compete during the night between June and September and during the day between October and January. The concentration of most free amino acids remained relatively constant between June and January. However, those of glutamic acid, alanine, isoleucine and lysine tended to decrease and that of arginine (Arg) significantly decreased between July and September. The concentration of methionine (Met) gradually increased between June and September and significantly decreased thereafter. The concentration of 3-methylhistidine (3-MH) significantly increased between July and September and decreased thereafter. There were significant correlation between 3-MH and Arg. In conclusion, this study provided evidence of significant seasonal change in plasma 3-MH, Arg and Met of racehorses, and this was considered to relate to an environmental effect. Moreover, our study is the first to show 3-MH in plasma of racehorses affected by environmental change.

Comparison of the Effects of a Brand-name Drug and Its Generic Drug on the Quality of Life of Alzheimer’s Disease Patients

        Mikio Sakakibara,Mitsuhiko Kido,Jun Kuribayashi,Hiroshi Okada,Ataru Igarashi,Hiroyuki Kamei,Toshitaka Nabeshima 대한정신약물학회 2015 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.13 No.2

Objective: The pharmacological effects of generic (GE) donepezil are the same as Aricept, its brand-name counterpart. However, little is known as to whether these two drugs provide the same quality of life (QOL). The study subjects were patients with Alzheimer’s disease who were taking donepezil hydrochloride tablets, and were selected by visiting either the local pharmacies or the patients’ homes. We chose the brand-name drug Aricept and its GE form donepezil to investigate, from a long-term caregiver’s perspective, the influence of both drugs on the patients’ QOL. Methods: An EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ-5D) was used to assess the QOL of patients with Alzheimer’s disease, before and after various Aricept and/or donepezil regimens. Patients were divided into four groups: first time users of Aricept (n=43), first time users of GE donepezil (n=45), users refilling previous prescriptions of Aricept (n=51), and users switching from Aricept to GE donepezil (n=51). Results: The average change in the EQ-5D utility indices rose significantly in the patients starting a new regimen of Aricept and its GE drug. The patients continuing an existing regimen of Aricept showed no significant differences, even after Aricept was switched to a GE drug. Conclusion: The QOL of patients starting a new regimen of Aricept and its GE drug improved. The QOL was maintained upon switching to the GE drug form.
