<P><B>Aims</B></P><P>DJ-1/park7, a multifunctional protein, may play essential roles in the vascular system. However, the function of DJ-1/park7 in vascular contractility has remained unclear. The present study was designed to investigate whether the DJ-1/park7 is involved in the regulation of vascular contractility and systolic blood pressure (SBP).</P><P><B>Methods and results</B></P><P>Norepinephrine (NE) elevated contraction in endothelium-intact vessels in a dose-dependent manner, to a greater extent in DJ-1/park7 knockout (DJ-1/park7−/−) mice than in wild-type (DJ-1/park7+/+) mice. Acetylcholine inhibited NE-evoked contraction in endothelium-intact vessels, and this was markedly impaired in DJ-1/park7−/− mice compared with DJ-1/park7+/+. Nitric oxide (NO) production (82.1 ± 2.8% of control) and endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) expression (61.7 ± 8.9%) were lower, but H2O2 production (126.4 ± 8.6%) was higher, in endothelial cells from DJ-1/park7−/− mice than in those from DJ-1/park7+/+ controls; these effects were reversed by DJ-1/park7-overexpressing endothelial cells from DJ-1/park7−/− mice. Histone deacetylase (HDAC)-1 recruitment and H3 histone acetylation at the eNOS promoter were elevated and diminished, respectively, in DJ-1/park7−/− mice compared with DJ-1/park7+/+ controls. Moreover, SBP was significantly elevated in DJ-1/park7−/− mice compared with DJ-1/park7+/+ controls, but this elevation was inhibited in mice treated with valproic acid, an inhibitor of Class I HDACs including HDAC-1.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>These results demonstrate that DJ-1/park7 protein may be implicated in the regulation of vascular contractility and blood pressure, probably by the impairment of NO production through H2O2-mediated epigenetic inhibition of eNOS expression.</P>

Vol.24 No.1
As correlation between financial development and real sector development is weakening in Korea recently, we are observing disparity between finance and growth. This paper reviews and evaluates potential factors causing this observed disparity. We further analyze the relationship between financial deepening and economic growth, and check for the possibility of excessive finance based on analyses using Korean industry-level panel data. We find that risk aversion tendency of firms, growing dependence on internal funds, structural weakness of the financial system, increasing allocative inefficency of finance, and growing dependence on household lending are the factors which may potentially explain this gap. The empirical results show that benefits from financial deepening are weak or insignificant. The findings in this study show that we cannot expect growth induced from further financial deepening in Korea.
Chemometric Tool of Chromatographic Pattern Recognition for the Analysis of Complex Mixtures
Park, Man Ki,Park, Jeong Hill,Cho, JungHwan,Kim, Na Young,Kang, Jong Seong Vol.8 No.-
A chemometric tool was developed for the analysis of complex mixtures such as crude drugs by the method of pattern recognition. Pattern recognition was accomplished by a multiple reference peak identification method and three kinds of outlier statistics. This tool was tested on the analysis of synthetic mixtures.
Radial Distribution of Noble Metal Precipitates in a Used Fuel Pin
Vol.21 No.1
Noble metal precipitates are fission products that can be found as metallic alloys in used nuclear fuel. They do not exist homogenously inside the fuel pellets, but exists in grain boundaries in the form of immiscible particles. The first drawback that comes because they exist in grain boundaries is the degradation of mechanical integrity. The particles in the grain boundaries can be considered as defect n solid solution of uranium oxide pellets, and they can change the lattice volume. Therefore, it is known that it can cause stress corrosion cracking of fuel pellets. Furthermore, there is a negative effect from the perspective of used fuel management. However, they also have a positive effect on used fuel management. Since the noble metal has galvanic reduction effect, the particles serve as an oxidation inhibitor for uranium. There are many other effects regarding to the noble metal precipitates. However, in any case, quantifying the particles is important in order to quantitatively analyze these effects from the perspective of used fuel management. SCALE/TRITON code was applied to calculate the noble metal isotopes including Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh and Pd. In order to calculate the distribution inside the pin, the multiregion cell model was selected. In particular, a cylindrical geometry was used, and the pellet was divided into several layers. In addition, coolant and cladding surrounded the pellet. Finally, the radial distribution was evaluated using the computational code, along with neutron flux map.
Planar Distribution of Noble Metal Phase in a Used Fuel Assembly
Vol.21 No.2
Noble metal phase, present in used fuel, are fission products that can be found as metallic precipitates in used nuclear fuel. They exist as small particles (nm~um) in grain boundaries of the used fuels. Since they are particles deposited between the grain structures, they can be considered as defects in the pellet structure. Thermal expansion of fuels with noble metal is slightly higher than that of bare fuels. The fuels at high temperature, such as immediately after being discharged from nuclear reactors, may be subject to fuel failure if sufficient cooling is not provided. Recent research has shown that the noble metals can migrate into the rim space between the pellet and the cladding, and be deposited in the inner layer of the claddings. therefore, the mechanical integrity of the cladding can be degraded by noble metals, as well as the pellets. The concentration of the noble metal phase should be considered to evaluate the effect of the noble metals on the fuel integrity, after discharge from the reactors. SCALE/ORIGEN code was used to evaluate the noble metals in fuel assembly-scale, and the radial distribution in the fuel assembly. The radial distribution of the reactor power was derived from the SCALE/TRITON, considering Westinghouse 17×17. Square cell model was chosen for the geometry and 1/4 model was applied to reduce the computation time.
HExDB: Human EXon DataBase for Alternative Splicing Pattern Analysis
Park, Junghwan,Lee, Minho,Bhak, Jong Korea Genome Organization 2005 Genomics & informatics Vol.3 No.3
HExDB is a database for analyzing exon and splicing pattern information in Homo sapiens. HExDB is useful for specific purposes: 1) to design primers for exon amplification from cDNA and 2) to understand the change of ORFs by alternative splicing. HExDB was constructed by integrating data from AltExtron which is the computationally predicted exon database, Ensemble cDNA annotation, and Affymetrix genome tile published recently. Although it may contain false positive data, HExDB is good starting point due to its sensitivity. At present, there areas many as 2,046,519 exons stored in the HExDB. We found that $16.8\%$ of the exons in the database was constitutive exons and $83.1\%$ were novel gene exons.
