Historicist View and Confucian Repertoire in Late Chosôn : A Southerner Prism

2009 International Journal of Korean History Vol.14 No.-

Vol.66 No.5

Primary gastrointestinal lymphomas are commonly B-cell type in contrast to the rare T-cell type, which has been noted as a complication of celiac disease that has not been reported in Korea so far. Primary T-cell lymphoma is commonly associated with enteropathy, and we report a case of small bowel T-cell lymphoma associated with enteropathy, with minimal mucosal lesion lesions as flattening of folds, which was difficult to differentiate with celiac disease clinically and pathologically.

Systemic transplantation of human adipose-derived stem cells stimulates bone repair by promoting osteoblast and osteoclast function

        Lee, Kyunghee,Kim, Hyunsoo,Kim, Jin-Man,Kim, Jae-Ryong,Kim, Keuk-Jun,Kim, Yong-Jin,Park, Se-Il,Jeong, Jae-Ho,Moon, Young-mi,Lim, Hyun-Sook,Bae, Dong-Won,Kwon, Joseph,Ko, Chang-Yong,Kim, Han-Sung,Shin, Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2011 JOURNAL OF CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR MEDICINE Vol.15 No.10

<P>Systemic transplantation of adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) is emerging as a novel therapeutic option for functional recovery of diverse damaged tissues. This study investigated the effects of systemic transplantation of human ASCs (hASCs) on bone repair. We found that hASCs secrete various bone cell-activating factors, including hepatocyte growth factor and extracellular matrix proteins. Systemic transplantation of hASCs into ovariectomized mice induced an increased number of both osteoblasts and osteoclasts in bone tissue and thereby prevented bone loss. We also observed that conditioned medium from hASCs is capable of stimulating proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts <I>via</I> Smad/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)/JNK (c-jun NH2-terminal kinase) activation as well as survival and differentiation of osteoclasts <I>via</I> ERK/JNK/p38 activation <I>in vitro</I>. Overall, our findings suggest that paracrine factors secreted from hASCs improve bone repair and that hASCs can be a valuable tool for use in osteoporosis therapy.</P>

AHNAK Loss in Mice Promotes Type II Pneumocyte Hyperplasia and Lung Tumor Development

        Park, Jun Won,Kim, Il Yong,Choi, Ji Won,Lim, Hee Jung,Shin, Jae Hoon,Kim, Yo Na,Lee, Seo Hyun,Son, Yeri,Sohn, Mira,Woo, Jong Kyu,Jeong, Joseph H.,Lee, Cheolju,Bae, Yun Soo,Seong, Je Kyung American Association for Cancer Research 2018 Molecular Cancer Research Vol.16 No.8

<P>AHNAK is known to be a tumor suppressor in breast cancer due to its ability to activate the TGFβ signaling pathway. However, the role of AHNAK in lung tumor development and progression remains unknown. Here, the Ahnak gene was disrupted to determine its effect on lung tumorigenesis and the mechanism by which it triggers lung tumor development was investigated. First, AHNAK protein expression was determined to be decreased in human lung adenocarcinomas compared with matched nonneoplastic lung tissues. Then, Ahnak<I>−/−</I> mice were used to investigate the role of AHNAK in pulmonary tumorigenesis. Ahnak<I>−/−</I> mice showed increased lung volume and thicker alveolar walls with type II pneumocyte hyperplasia. Most importantly, approximately 20% of aged Ahnak<I>−/−</I> mice developed lung tumors, and Ahnak<I>−/−</I> mice were more susceptible to urethane-induced pulmonary carcinogenesis than wild-type mice. Mechanistically, Ahnak deficiency promotes the cell growth of lung epithelial cells by suppressing the TGFβ signaling pathway. In addition, increased numbers of M2-like alveolar macrophages (AM) were observed in Ahnak<I>−/−</I> lungs, and the depletion of AMs in Ahnak<I>−/−</I> lungs alleviated lung hyperplastic lesions, suggesting that M2-like AMs promoted the progression of lung hyperplastic lesions in Ahnak-null mice. Collectively, AHNAK suppresses type II pneumocyte proliferation and inhibits tumor-promoting M2 alternative activation of macrophages in mouse lung tissue. These results suggest that AHNAK functions as a novel tumor suppressor in lung cancer.</P><P><B>Implications:</B> The tumor suppressor function of AHNAK, in murine lungs, occurs by suppressing alveolar epithelial cell proliferation and modulating lung microenvironment. <I>Mol Cancer Res; 16(8); 1287–98. ©2018 AACR</I>.</P>

        Global History and East Asia

        Kwon Nae-hyun(Kw?n Naehy?n),Joseph Jeong-il Lee(이정일) 고려대학교 한국사연구소 2012 International Journal of Korean History Vol.17 No.2

Some Asia historians have recently argued for a new understanding of global history by reexamining how the European countries took the lead in making modern civilization and capitalism, specifically concentrating on historical exchanges between Europe and Asia from the 17 th to 18th centuries. The European countries, according to these scholars, learned far more from their contact with Asia than is conventionally known, to the point of building the groundwork for the early shape of modern civilization in Europe. This way of looking at Europe and China on the same level is relevant both for a future-oriented discussion on symmetric perspectives in the shape of early modern history. However, global historians do not seem to effectively deal with the problem of the established Eurocentric interpretation. In this paper, we argue that the globalist frontage on convergence is not to neglect divergence but maintain the co-operation of convergence and divergence together from a balanced perspective. To be specific, the analytic unit of comparison should move further into the history of Asia, East Asia, and even more specific narrower locales so as to shed light on the working of convergence and divergence in the unfolding of modern civilization. The above approves us to catechize afresh such crucial subject matters as power relations, cultural order, collective identity and historiography 1) within the 2) context of specific locale, 2) in the historical setting of continental East Asia, and 3) along with the advent of modern civilization. In light of this, we revisit the issue of collective identity in late Chos?n from the 17th to 18th centuries, and briefly discuss how Chos?n actors, specifically state and ruling elites, developed the collective identity of Chos?n herself without breaking the long-standing partnership with the China-led world order and civilization in continental East Asia. This paper stays away from any debate over a Korean prototype of modern nation-state or a pristine non-Confucian nativism contrary to Confucianism during the periods. Instead, it takes on the issue in such a way as to understand the vivid process of interactions displaying one layer of convergence(universal civilization/imperium) and divergence (accommodation/sovereignty) within the East Asia of the time. This paradigm will help us to look not only at the dynamic workings of globalism and localism in East Asia, but also the larger scale of the convergence-divergence frame that opens up a coexistence of the West-focused, Asia-focused, East Asia-focused. China-focused, and Korea-focused perspectives in a truer sense of world history.
