      • A Hybrid Technique for De-interlacing Based on Motion Compensation Reliability

        Although motion compensated interpolation (MCI) improves the vertical resolution of de-interlaced frames effectively, it often introduces serious defects like feathering artifacts. In this paper, we propose an arbitration rule between MCI and intra-field interpolation for de-interlacing to avoid the motion compensation artifacts (MCAs) produced by erroneous MCI. In the proposed deinterlacing method, we check the MCI results by using the proposed MCA detection method and decide whether the MCI results are reliable or not. And then, we use the reliability of MCI results to combine two de-interlacing methods. The proposed arbitration method is more elaborate than conventional methods since we directly detect the artifacts in MCI results and the reliability of MCI results is used as one of the important factors of the proposed arbitration weights. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better image quality than the conventional methods in terms of both subjective and objective measures.

      • Dependence of superconductivity on the crystallinity of Nb films on Si wafers

        Among elemental metals, niobium (Nb) has the highest superconducting transition temperature (Tc) at ambient pressure. Thus, Nb films have been used in superconducting electronics and radio frequency cavity applications. In this study, the depositional factors determining the crystallinity and Tc of Nb films were investigated. An Nb film grown at a sputtering temperature of 240°C exhibited the maximum crystallinity of Nb and the minimum crystallinity of niobium oxide. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed a maximum atomic percent of niobium and a minimum atomic percent of oxygen. A sputtering power of 210 W and a sputtering time of 50 min were the optimal conditions for Nb deposition, and the Tc of the optimized film (9.08 K) was close to that of bulk Nb (9.25 K). Transmission electron microscopy images of the thick film directly confirmed the removal of the typical in-plane compressive strain in the (110) plane caused by residual stress.

        Is Good Beginning Half Done?

        일본 일반사회조사(JGSS)의 데이터를 이용해서, 본 연구는 일본에서의 첫 일자리의 고용형태가 이후의 고용전망에 미치는 효과를 분석하였다. 첫 일자리 고용 지위의 잠재적 내생성을 통제하기 위해서, 본 연구는 단일변량 프로빗 모델과 이변량 프로빗 모델을 함께 사용하여 분석하였으나. 첫 일자리 고용 지위의 내생성에 대한 증거는 발견되지 않았다. 최종 학교를 마친 후 비정규직으로 첫 취업을 한 노동자는 정규직으로 첫 취업한 노동자에 비해서 현재 정규 일자리를 가질 확률이 유의하게 낮았다. 또한 본 연구는 비정규직 첫 취업 효과의 민감도(sensitivity)를 평가하기 위해 여러 모형을 설정하여 분석하였으나, 비정규직 첫 취업의 부정적 효과는 대체로 안정적이었다. Using data from Japanese General Social Surveys (JGSS), this study examines the effects of non-regular initial employment status on future employment prospects. In order to deal with the potential endogeneity of initial employment status, empirical analyses use bivariate probit models as well as univariate probit models. However I found almost no evidence that the univariate probit models were subject to endogeneity bias. The empirical results indicate that getting non-regular jobs at the year of leaving school reduces significantly the probability of obtaining regular full-time job at present. I also implemented several sensitivity tests, and the finding were relatively stable across several specifications.

      • Experiences of hospitalization in pregnant women with preterm labor: A phenomenological study

        Aim: The purpose of this study was to describe lived experiences of hospitalization of pregnant women during preterm labor. Method: A qualitative method was adopted. Individual in-depth interviews were used with nine participants, over the age of 20, who have been hospitalized for more than one week after being diagnosed for preterm labor. All interviews were audio-taped and verbatim transcripts were made for the analysis. Data were analyzed following the Colaizzi’s phenomenological method. Results: Among the nine participants, the ages ranged from 26 to 36, all married. Days of hospitalization averaged 13.1 days. Five theme clusters emerged from the analysis. ‘Withstanding hospitalization for fetus’s well-being’ describes the feeling of women during preterm labor and their endurance during a prolonged hospitalization because the fetus comes first. ‘Continuous frustration in hospital’ illustrates emotions while lying in bed and quietly thinking to yourself. ‘Unsatisfying physiological needs’ describes awareness of the conflicts with basic human physiological needs in situations where there is nothing that can be done arbitrarily. ‘Gratitude for the people who support me’ illustrates the feeling from family and medical staff. ‘Perception change by accepting reality’ describes accepting hospitalization and making efforts to spend the rest of their hospitalization in good health. Conclusion: The findings in this study provide deep understanding and insights of experiences at hospitals with preterm labor women. This study requires development of interventions for women in hospitals during preterm labor.

      • Computation of Supersonic Compression Ramp Flow with Nonequilibrium Eddy Viscosity Model

        The nonequilibrium eddy viscosity model of Yoshizawa et al. is tested against the supersonic compression ramp flow with 20° wedge angle which is a typical case of the strong shock-wave/turbulent-boundary-layer interaction (STBLI). First. the low-Reynolds number two equation model of Abe et at. is tested as a baseline equilibrium case. and then the equilibrium part of the eddy viscosity is replaced with the nonequilibrium model. Results of the computation indicate that the nonequilibrium eddy viscosity model performs much better in predicting the skin friction coefficient than the equilibrium one. The material-derivative-related term in the model relation automatically prevents the eddy viscosity being spuriously large in the region subjected to a strong mean velocity shear.

        Association of Eating Alone with Depressive Symptoms and Suicidal Ideation among Korean Adults

        Background: In recent years, eating dinner alone has become a rising social issue in Korea. Depression is one of the primary health problems that can lead to numerous negative consequences. However, few studies have focused on people who eat alone and the effect of eating alone on depression. We investigated the association between eating dinner alone and depression. Methods: Our cross-sectional study included data from 14,093 Korean adults aged above 19 years old; data were sourced from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2014, 2016, and 2018, when the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was used. We classified participants based on their dinner habits: eating alone or social eating. Depression and suicidal ideation among participants were measured using the PHQ-9. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to investigate whether eating alone was related to depression or suicidal ideation after adjusting for age, sex, household income, education, alcohol, smoking, exercise, frequency of eating out, and living arrangement. Results: Individuals who ate dinner alone (22.9%) had higher depression and suicidal ideation rates than those who ate with others. Those who ate alone had greater odds ratios (ORs) of depressive symptoms (depression: OR, 1.42; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.27–1.58; suicidal ideation: OR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.25–1.78) after adjustment for covariates. The subgroup analysis shows that the odds of suicidal ideation among individuals who eat alone were nonexistent among those who performed regular aerobic exercise. Conclusion: Eating dinner alone is closely associated with depressive symptoms, particularly suicidal ideation. Therefore, providing opportunities to eat with others may be effective for maintaining the mental health of adults.

      • Modified torque magnetometry to determine magnetic anisotropy

        We present a novel method for magnetic anisotropy measurement using membrane-type surface stress sensor (MSS). This sensor has a silicon membrane supported by four beams incorporating piezoresistive paths [1]. We modified the on-chip aluminum interconnect on the MSS to obtain more magnetic information of the material and used it for torque measurement. Angle-dependent torque measurement of magnetic materials were preformed by rotating the device with respect to the applied magnetic field. Instead of one existing Wheatstone Bridge, we modified the on-chip aluminum interconnect to become two Wheatstone bridge circuits. These variations will allow simultaneous investigation of magnetic responses according to different crystallographic directions in a two-dimensional plane.
