        A New ent-Kaurane type Diterpenoid Glycoside from Inula japonica Thunb

        A new ent-kaurane type diterpenoid glycoside, 17-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-16α-ent-kauran-19-oic acid (1), together with 17-hydroxy-16α-ent-kauran-19-oic acid (2), 16α,17-dihydroxyl-ent-kauran-19-oic acid (3), and 16α-hydroxy-17-acetoxy-ent- kauran-19-oic acid (4) were isolated from the aerial parts of Inula japonica Thunb. The structure of 1 was determined mainly by use of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques including HSQC, 1H-1H COSY, HMBC, and NOESY. In addition, 4 exhibited significant inhibitory activity on NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells with IC50 value of 14.3 μg/mL.

        Prognostic Value of Baseline and Interim Total Metabolic Tumor Volume and Total Lesion Glycolysis Measured on 18F-FDG PET-CT in Patients with Follicular Lymphoma

        Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of total metabolic tumor volume (TMTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) in patients with follicular lymphoma (FL) at baseline and mid-treatment with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography computed tomography (PET-CT) scans. Materials and Methods The study analyzed data from 48 patients with FL who were treated in Jiangsu Province Hospital and reviewed their baseline PET-CT scans. TMTV and TLG were computed by using the absolute value of 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 thresholding method, respectively. Results Median age was 53 years, 75.0% of patients had stage III to IV disease, 43.8% had a Follicular Lymphoma International Prognostic Index 1 (FLIPI1) score of 3 to 5 and 20.8% had a FLIPI2 score of 3 to 5. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed the optimal cut-off values for TMTV3.0 and TLG3.0 were 476.4 (sensitivity, 85.7%; specificity, 78.0%; area under the curve [AUC], 0.760; p=0.003) and 2,676.9 (sensitivity, 71.4%; specificity, 78.0%; AUC, 0.760; p=0.003). On multivariable analysis, TMTV3.0 and TLG3.0 were independent predictors of both progression-free survival (PFS) (hazard ratio [HR], 5.406; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.326 to 22.040; p=0.019 and HR, 6.502; 95% CI, 1.079 to 39.182; p=0.042) and overall survival (OS) (HR, 4.111; 95% CI, 1.125 to 15.027; p=0.033 and HR, 5.885; 95% CI, 1.014 to 34.148; p=0.049). ROC curve analysis showed the optimal cut-off values for TMTV3.0 and TLG3.0 were 66.3% (sensitivity, 85.7%; specificity, 63.4%; AUC, 0.774; p < 0.001) and 64.5% (sensitivity, 85.7%; specificity, 65.9%; AUC, 0.777; p < 0.001). Conclusion Baseline TMTV and TLG are strong predictors of PFS and OS in FL. Furthermore, interim TMTV (TMTV > 66.3%) and TLG (TLG > 64.5%) reduction are valuable tools for early treatment response assessment in FL patients.

      • Prognostic Significance of C-reactive Protein in Urological Cancers: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

        Background: C-reactive protein (CRP), considered as a prototypical inflammatory cytokine, has been proposed to be involved in tumor progression through inflammation. Recent studies have indicated CRP as a progostic predictor for urological cancers, but the results remain controversial. Materials and Methods: A systematic search of Medline, Scopus and the Cochrane Library was performed to identify eligible studies published between Jan 1, 2001 and Sep 1, 2013. Outcomes of interest were collected from studies comparing overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival (CSS) and relapse-free survival (RFS) in patients with elevated CRP levels and those having lower levels. Studies were pooled, and combined hazard ratio (HR) of CRP with its 95% confidence interval (CI) for survival were used for the effect size estimate. Results: A total of 43 studies (7,490 patients) were included in this meta-analysis (25 for RCC, 10 for UC, and 8 for PC). Our pooled results showed that elevated serum CRP level was associated with poor OS (HR: 1.26, 95%CI: 1.22-1.30) and RFS (HR: 1.38 95%CI: 1.29-1.47), respectively. For CSS the pooled HR (HR: 1.33, 95%CI: 1.28-1.39) for higher CRP expression could strongly predict poorer survival in urological cancers. Simultaneously, elevated serum CRP was also significantly associated with poor prognosis in the subgroup analysis. Conclusions: Our pooled results demonstrate that a high serum level of CRP as an inflammation biomarker denotes a poor prognosis of patients with urological cancers. Further large prospective studies should be performed to confirm whether CRP, as a biomarker of inflammation, has a prognostic role in urological cancer progression.

        Nonlinear Increase of Spatial Noise for Ultrashort Pulses with Different Temporal Widths

        In this paper, the dynamic evolution of the spatial noise modulation of ultrashort laser pulses in carbon disulfide (CS2) is investigated experimentally, and different temporal widths of the stretched pulse are analyzed for spatial noise gain. The spatial noise evolution (i.e., small-scale self-focusing) of ultrashort laser pulses with different temporal widths as a function of the length of the CS2 has been observed. If the spectral bandwidth is invariant, the experimental results show that a stretched pulse with a broader temporal width can postpone the small-scale self-focusing of spatial noise for longer medium length with constant input power or for greater input power with the same medium length.         Identification of Polymorphisms in Thymic Stromal Lymphopoietin (TSLP) Gene and Their Association with Allergic Rhinitis

        Dendritic cell (DC) activator, thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) induces DCs to produce Th2-attracting chemokines, causing differentiation of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells into effector cells. The differentiated cells are characterized by a typical pro-allergic phenotype. In this study, we identified four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and one variation site (g.-305delT) from the results of scanned human TSLP gene. The SNPs are as following: g.-1914A>G and g.-847C>T in promoter, g.-82C>T in 5` UTR and g.1117C>T in intron 2. We also evaluated the association of genotype and allele frequencies of these SNPs between non-allergic rhinitis controls and allergic rhinitis patients. We further investigated possible correlations between each genotype with serum total IgE levels and peripheral blood eosinophil counts in allergic rhinitis patients. The frequencies of haplotype constructed by these SNPs between these two groups were also compared. Our results demonstrate the two SNPs (g.-1914A>G and g.-847C>T) were associated with susceptibility of allergic rhinitis (P=0.006 and P=0.015 respectively), however, serum total IgE levels were not significantly related with the SNPs.

        宋代的蔬菜與蔬菜業

        Based on previous, this article tries doing a systematic analysis of Sung vegetables and vegetable industry. There were about forty to fifty different types of vegetables in Sung, The whole vegetable category was similar to contemporary, and cultivation, storage technology was mature. The Sungs recognized that vegetables of different varieties have different sowing season, different varieties of vegetables and loose soil tilth required different degrees. In dishes with cultivation methods, all regions have geographical differences in common. There is a growing vegetables in the water garden of turnip in South, which popularized in Guangdong, Zhejiang and Sichuan. North was also about governance intensive vegetable bed. The Sungs mastered a seed treatment, germination, seed and nursery technology, in particular, pregermination way the use of incubation, the use of sulfur and other minerals to increase vegetable production, to improve quality and sealed storage of vegetables. People exclaimed their sophisticated skills. Along with the improvement of productivity, urbanization, by the former generation of self sufficiency, Sung’s Vegetable industry was tended to specialization and commercialization. Both the southern border areas or rural and urban, there were extensive gardens and vegetable production base. Vegetables should be on consumer demand in the city, the out skirts of the city was the emergence of specialized vegetable production base. Because of the relations of production of vegetables, people's livelihood, huge demand, Lucrative, low risk, it attracted all classes. In addition to the vegetable gardens of the ordinary farmers and citizens, there were vegetable gardens owed officials, government run and operated by the monastery, which had amazing size. At the same time, Sung government was also aware of the profit, gradually strengthened the management and revenue of vegetable industry. 본 論文은 이전 연구 성과를 토대로 宋代의 蔬菜와 蔬菜業에 대하여 일련의 분석과 연구를 하고자 한다. 宋代 蔬菜의 種類는 約 四五十種이고 大體的으로 當代의 蔬菜品類는 매우 다양하였다. 재배와 儲藏 技術이 상당히 발달하였다. 宋代의 사람들은 각각의 蔬菜品種별로 그 파종 시기, 土質과 疏鬆度(토질이 푸석푸석한정도)가 다르다는 것을 알고 있었다. 菜品과 재배 方法上에 地區間에 共性과 差異가 있으며 南方에서는 水面에 蔬菜를 재배하는 葑園이 이었으며 兩廣, 兩浙, 蜀等地에서 보편화 되었다. 北方에서는 精耕细作을 중시하였다. 宋人은 種子處理, 催芽, 播種과 育苗技術을 알고 있었으며 특히 孵化方式을 이용하여 催芽를 하였으며 硫磺等의 礦物質을 이용하여 蔬菜의 產量과 品質을 향상 시켰고 蔬菜를 密封储藏技術等을 사용하였다. 生產力의 향상과 城市化等으로 인하여 宋代의 蔬菜業은 前代의 自給自足인 형태에서 專業化와 商品化로 변화하였다. 江南, 邊境地區의 農村과 城鎮을 막론하고 菜園과 蔬菜生產基地가 광범히 존재하였다. 城市 에서의 蔬菜의 消費需求로 인하여 近郊에 城市에 專門面的으로 蔬菜를 공급하는 蔬菜生產基地가 생겨나게 되었다. 蔬菜의 生產은 民生과 關係되었고, 需求가 龐大하고 利潤이 豐厚하였으며 風險이 비교적 적은 이유로 社會各階層이 蔬菜業에 종사하게 하였다. 普通의 農戶와 市民經營的 菜圃 이외에 士大夫 혹은 官員, 官營, 寺院等에서 菜圃를 經營하였으며 規模또한 매우 컸다. 同時에 宋政府 또한 蔬菜業에서 많은 利益이 발생하는 것을 인식하고 逐漸적으로 蔬菜业에 대한 管 理와 稅收를 강화하게 되었다.

      • Micrococcus endophyticus sp. nov., isolated from surface-sterilized Aquilaria sinensis roots.

        <P>A Gram-positive bacterial strain, designated YIM 56238(T), was isolated from plant roots (Aquilaria sinensis), and characterized by using a polyphasic approach. Strain YIM 56238(T) grew optimally at pH 7.0-8.0 and at 28 degrees C. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain YIM 56238(T) indicated that it belongs to the genus Micrococcus. Chemotaxonomic data strongly supported the classification of this strain within the genus Micrococcus: the cell-wall peptidoglycan contained lysine, glutamic acid, alanine and glycine; the predominant menaquinones were MK-8(H(2)) (63.6 %) and MK-7(H(2)) (21.1 %); the phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and an unknown ninhydrin-negative phospholipid; and the major cellular fatty acids were iso-C(15 : 0) (30.95 %) and anteiso-C(15 : 0) (53.75 %). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 72.9 mol%. A number of physiological features were found that clearly distinguished strain YIM 56238(T) from recognized species of the genus Micrococcus. DNA-DNA hybridization studies suggested that the novel strain represents a separate genomic species. On the basis of the data, therefore, strain YIM 56238(T) represents a novel species of the genus Micrococcus, for which the name Micrococcus endophyticus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM 56238(T) (=DSM 17945(T)=KCTC 19156(T)).</P>

      • MiR-150-5p Suppresses Colorectal Cancer Cell Migration and Invasion through Targeting MUC4

        Growing evidence suggests that miR-150-5p has an important role in regulating genesis of various types of cancer. However, the roles and the underlying mechanisms of miR-150-5p in development of colorectal cancer (CRC) remain largely unknown. Transwell chambers were used to analyze effects on cell migration and invasion by miR-150-5p. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), Western blotting and dual-luciferase 3' UTR reporter assay were carried out to identify the target genes of miR-150-5p. In our research, miR-150-5p suppressed CRC cell migration and invasion, and MUC4 was identified as a direct target gene. Its effects were partly blocked by re-expression of MUC4. In conclusiomn, miR-150-5p may suppress CRC metastasis through directly targeting MUC4, highlighting its potential as a novel agent for the treatment of CRC metastasis.

        Circulating Low Absolute CD4+ T Cell Counts May Predict Poor Prognosis in Extranodal NK/T-Cell Lymphoma Patients Treating with Pegaspargase-Based Chemotherapy

        Purpose Extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTL) is a rare subtype of non- Hodgkin lymphoma, and asparaginase-based regimens are the best first-line treatments. Data on the role of specific circulating lymphocyte subsets in the progression of ENKTL are limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical correlation and distribution of circulating absolute CD4+ T-cell counts (ACD4Cs) in ENKTL. Materials and Methods We retrospectively searched medical records for 70 newly diagnosed ENKTL patients treated with pegaspargase-based regimens. Comparison of ACD4Cs as a continuous parameter in different groups was calculated. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to assess prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Results Stage III/IV, B symptoms, elevated lactate dehydrogenase, monocytopenia, high-intermediate and high risk International Prognostic Index (IPI) and Korean Prognostic Index (KPI), high risk Prognostic Index of Natural Killer Lymphoma (PINK), and lower lymphocytes were significantly associated with low ACD4C at diagnosis. With a median follow-up time of 32 months, patients who had an ACD4C < 0.30109/L had a worse OS. Median OS was 11 months and median PFS was 5 months in the low ACD4C cohort. There were significant differences in both OS and PFS between the two cohorts. Moreover, multivariate Cox analysis identified ACD4Cs as an independent predictor for OS and PFS. Conclusion Low ACD4Cs were associated with poorer survival and could act as a negative predictor for ENKTL patients treated with asparaginase-based regimens.
