        Statin Therapy and the Risk of Osteoporotic Fractures in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome: a Nested Case-Control Study

        Objective: We aimed to investigate the association between statin use and the risk of major osteoporotic fractures in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods: A nested case-control study was performed in patients with MetS (≥50 years) who had no history of osteoporotic fracture using the Korean National Health Insurance Service- Health Screening Cohort. This study included 17,041 patients diagnosed with new-onset osteoporotic fractures and controls matched in a 1:1 ratio by age, sex, body mass index, cohort entry date, and follow-up duration. Conditional logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate covariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: During a 4-year follow-up period, the risk of major osteoporotic fractures was significantly reduced by 9% (OR, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.85–0.97) in statin users compared with that in non-users. Among subtypes of major osteoporotic fracture, a risk reduction with statin therapy was significant for vertebral fracture (OR, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.79–0.94) but not for non-vertebral fracture (OR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.88–1.06). Longer duration (OR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.96–0.99, per 1-year increase) and higher cumulative dose (OR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.95–0.99, per 365 defined daily doses) of statins were negatively associated with the risk of major osteoporotic fracture. Conclusion: This study supports the hypothesis that statin therapy has a beneficial effect on major osteoporotic fractures, especially vertebral fractures, in patients with MetS.

        Bias-minimized quantification of microRNA reveals widespread alternative processing and 3′ end modification

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>MicroRNAs (miRNAs) modulate diverse biological and pathological processes via post-transcriptional gene silencing. High-throughput small RNA sequencing (sRNA-seq) has been widely adopted to investigate the functions and regulatory mechanisms of miRNAs. However, accurate quantification of miRNAs has been limited owing to the severe ligation bias in conventional sRNA-seq methods. Here, we quantify miRNAs and their variants (known as isomiRs) by an improved sRNA-seq protocol, termed AQ-seq (accurate quantification by sequencing), that utilizes adapters with terminal degenerate sequences and a high concentration of polyethylene glycol (PEG), which minimize the ligation bias during library preparation. Measurement using AQ-seq allows us to correct the previously misannotated 5′ end usage and strand preference in public databases. Importantly, the analysis of 5′ terminal heterogeneity reveals widespread alternative processing events which have been underestimated. We also identify highly uridylated miRNAs originating from the 3p strands, indicating regulations mediated by terminal uridylyl transferases at the pre-miRNA stage. Taken together, our study reveals the complexity of the miRNA isoform landscape, allowing us to refine miRNA annotation and to advance our understanding of miRNA regulation. Furthermore, AQ-seq can be adopted to improve other ligation-based sequencing methods including crosslinking-immunoprecipitation-sequencing (CLIP-seq) and ribosome profiling (Ribo-seq).</P>

        <P>Plant seedlings are not photoautotrophs until they are equipped with photosynthetic machinery. Some plant cells are remodeled after being exposed to light, and a group of peroxisomal proteins are degraded during the remodeling. Autophagy was proposed as one of the mechanisms for the degradation of peroxisomal proteins. We recently showed that ATG7-dependent autophagy is partially responsible for the degradation of obsolete peroxisomal proteins during Arabidopsis seedling growth.</P>

      • Interactive Effect of the Empirical Lifestyle Index for Insulin Resistance with the Common Genetic Susceptibility Locus rs2423279 for Colorectal Cancer

        This study aims to examine the empirical insulinemic potential consisting of dietary and lifestyle factors and the interactive effect with the common genetic susceptibility locus rs2423279 on the risk of colorectal cancer. This case- control study was conducted with 923 patients of colorectal cancer and 1,846 controls. The empirical indices for assessing the insulinemic potential were calculated based on semi- quantitative food frequency and lifestyle questionnaires. A genetic variant of rs2423279 was genotyped. The significant effect between the empirical lifestyle index for insulin resistance (ELIR), which assesses dietary and lifestyle patterns related to insulin resistance, and C allele carriers of rs2423279 was stronger than that for homozygous T allele carriers regarding the risk of colorectal cancer (OR, 95% CI=2.50, 1.78-3.51, P for interaction=0.034). The empirical insulinemic potential for insulin resistance might have interactive effects with the rs2423279 polymorphism on the risk of colorectal cancer. The results of this study suggest the basis of the metabolic impact of the insulin response on colorectal carcinogenesis.

        박정희 시대의 ‘민족’ 담론과 이만희 영화의 ‘민족’ 표상

        본고는 이만희 영화에 나타난 ‘민족’의 표상이 박정희 정권이 국가의 주체로서 호명했던 ‘민족’과 충돌하고 합일되는 지점들을 살펴보았다. 군사 쿠테타를 통해 통치 권력을 잡은 박정희는 산업 발전을 통한 ‘국민 국가’ 건설과, 무엇보다도 자신의 정치적 정당성을 입증하기 위한 ‘조국근대화’를 위해 정신적 기반으로서 ‘민족주의’를 강조했다. 한국 역사 안에서 ‘민족’ 개념은 허구적인 동시에 실체적으로 작동해왔다. 그것은 ‘민족’이라는 추상적 개념이 ‘인종’이나 ‘종족’과 같은 실체와 직접적으로 결합되기 때문이다. 한국 전쟁 참전 용사였던 이만희는 1960년대 ‘반공 영화’ 흥행작들을 제작하는 과정에서 국가로부터 물질적, 제도적으로 전폭적인 지원을 받기도 했다. 그러나 1965년 작품인 <7인의 여포로>에서 북한군을 동일 ‘민족’의 범주 안에서 형상화했다는 이유로 이만희는 검찰에 의해 반공법 위반으로 기소되었고 영화는 상영 금지 처분까지 받았다. 국가가 영화의 상영을 위한 검열 뿐 아니라 제작 허가 및 영화 제작사의 설립 허가에까지 관여했던 1960~70년대에 이 사건은 이만희를 비롯해 수많은 창작자들에게 예술적 상상력을 제한하게 되는 결정적인 계기가 되었다. 그러나 정부의 적극적인 지원 속에서 만들어진 이만희의 다른 작품에서 다루어졌던 국군과 이 작품에서 국군 묘사가 본질적으로 다르지 않다는 점을 감안할 때 박정희 정권과 이만희의 민족 표상이 늘 상충되는 것이었다고 볼 수는 없다. 북한군에 대한 형상화를 최소화하거나 삭제하고 ‘적(敵)’으로서 중공이나 소련을 두드러지게 묘사했거나 이데올로기 대립의 문제를 한 가족 내부의 특수한 비극으로 축소해서 묘사한 이만희의 다른 영화들은 정권으로부터 아무런 제재를 받지 않았기 때문이다. 또 현실적인 시공간으로부터 이탈하여 ‘느와르’나 ‘웨스턴’의 장르규범들에 충실한 이만희의 영화들은 당대의 정치 권력에 의해 강제된 ‘민족’ 개념으로부터 탈주하는 민족 표상을 보여주고 있다. 이처럼 이만희 영화에서 나타난 다양한 민족 스펙트럼과 당대의 지배 권력이 강요했던 ‘민족’개념의 경계를 실체적으로 가시화하는 데 큰 역할을 하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. This study is aimed on contemplating collision and agreement on concept of "nation" between Manhee Lee"s fims and Junghee Park regime. Park needed "nationalism" not only for founding "modernization of the fatherland" but also justifying "5.16" military coup. In Korean history, "nation" had functioned fictionally and practically at the same time because the abstract concept of "nation" actually mingled with substantial "race". Manhee Lee, who was an actual war veteran in Korean War, made many successful war films supported a lot from the government and army. However he was charged of violating "anticommunism law" in 1966 because of making The Seven Female POW"s (1965). In this movie he described a North Korean officer as a decent human being and later he abandoned communism and emphasized identity of Korean "race". Screening The Seven Female POW was prohibited and director Lee was investigated by a prosecutor for several days. At that times this case might had affected not only on director Lee himself but also film industry in general because government censored every film in advance of making and gave the permission to found a film company and also had power to shut down one at any time in 1960~70s. Though Manhee Lee had hard time with several movies including The Seven Female POW. he made lots of films with financial and material backing of government. Regarding the fact that description of South Korean Military had no distinction between the former and the latter films, Lee and Park"s concept of "nation" was not always conflicted. The concept of "nation" appeared on his films was actually based on cultural and racial identity which was conveyed through colonial period. In Those films, instead of removing explicit depiction of North Korean solider he focused on describing Chinese Military or Soviet Union as nation"s enemy. Lee"s "post- national" stance showed in "noir" and "western" films which mostly free from real time and space and always beyond the history. Therefore Lee"s "post nationalty" had never come from desiring "non-national-state" but was the result of dreaming escaping the "nation" which imposed forcibly on people of Park"s regime.

Recent advances in MRI techniques, such as fat/iron quantification, diffusion-weighted images, and gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI, have greatly enhanced our understanding of hepatocarcinogenesis.</P>

        ‘가족돌봄’ 대안으로서의 ‘지역사회 노인통합돌봄’의 가능성 - 일본 지자체에서의 대응사례와 한국에의 시사점 -

        과거(한국은 2000년대 초반까지, 일본은 1990년대 초반까지) 한국과 일본의 복지체제에 있어서는 노인돌봄서비스 제공에 있어서 전통적인 가족의 역할을 강조하는 강한 ‘가족주의’ 모델에 기초해 있었다. 그러나, 양국 공히 노인돌봄 영역에서 ‘가족돌봄’이 한계를 드러내면서 1990년대 후반(한국은 2000년대 후반) 이후 장기요양보험제도를 도입하여 공적 노인돌봄체계를 정비 확충해 왔다. 이에, 양국에서는 장기요양보험제도 도입 이후 ‘가족돌봄’의 부담이 완화되었다는 주장도 제기되었다. 그렇지만, 양국의 경우 지금도 가족돌봄 없이는 공적 노인돌봄체계가 지탱하기 어려울 정도로 가족돌봄이 커다란 규모로 존재하고 있는 것이 그 실상이다. 이러한 가운데, 최근 양국 정부가 ‘가족돌봄’을 대신하여 ‘지역사회에 의한 돌봄’을 강조하고 있다는 것은 주목할 만하다. 본 연구에서는 최근 한국과 일본의 공적 노인돌봄체계에서 핵심 정책과제로 등장한 ‘지역사회 노인통합돌봄’에 주목하여, 특히 일본 지자체(세타가야구)에서의 선구적인 대응사례를 분석함으로써 ‘가족돌봄’ 대안으로서의 가능성과 그것이 한국에 주는 시사점을 모색하고자 한다. The welfare regime of both South Korea and Japan put an emphasis upon role of traditional family until early 2000s in South Korea and early 1990s in Japan. Both countries had difficulty at the family care, and in late 1990s (late 2000s in South Korea) to reform and expand elderly care system. Some scholars said that burden of family care was lessened after introduction of the system. In both countries, public elderly care service could not be valid and effective to expand scale. These days, both countries put an emphasis upon community-based integrated care rather than the family care. The study paid attention to community-based elderly care service to be important policy of local government in Japan and to investigate cases of Japanese local governments and to find out alternatives of the care and implications in South Korea.

      • 자기회로 이론을 이용한 링형 다극 유도형 변위센서의 모델링

        The performance of an inductive position sensor has approved by previous research papers. In this paper, magnetic circuit model of a ring-type multi-pole inductive position sensor is described. The magnetic circuit model is required to design inductive position sensor as well as draw a fault tolerance algorithm. Using the magnetic circuit theory, we derived the relationship between voltage applied and flux density in the normal air-gap. By idealizing the modulation/demodulation processes of signal processing circuit, sensor gain with respect to change of displacement is theoretically calculated. We present the results obtained by computer simulation, experiments and mathematical calculation using the magnetic circuit model, which validate the theoretical derivation.
