        Evaluation of seasonal effects on production performance of lactation sows reared in two different environments in South Korea

        This study was conducted to evaluate seasonal effects on production performance of lactation sows reared in two different environments in South Korea. A total of 76 sows (Landrace × Yorkshire) from the Dankook University experimental farm and 120 sows (Landrace × Yorkshire) from a commercial farm were collected. In the current study, reduced (p < 0.01) feed intake and energy intake during lactation were observed in warm season compared with cool season in both farms. Sows in cool season had higher backfat thickness at weaning but lower back fat loss (p < 0.01) than those in warm season. The weaning to estrus interval was lower (p < 0.01) in cool season than in warm season. Piglets weaned in warm season had lower (p < 0.01) body weight (BW), body weight gain (BWG), and average daily gain (ADG) at weaning than did those weaned in cool season on the Dankook University farm, whereas the reduction effect was only observed during 0 - 21 d on the commercial farm (p < 0.01). Moreover, piglets weaned in cool season had higher BW, BWG, and ADG (p < 0.05) on both farms. In conclusion, our results indicate that warm season had very negative effects on feed intake and production performance of lactating sows and piglets.

        Effects of multi-enzyme supplementation in a corn and soybean meal-based diet on growth performance, apparent digestibility, blood characteristics, fecal microbes and noxious gas emission in growing pigs

        The objective of this study was to determine the effect of multi-enzyme supplementation in a corn and soybean meal-based diet on the growth performance, apparent nutrient digestibility, blood profile, fecal microbes and noxious gas emission in growing pigs. A total of 80 crossbred [(Landrace × Yorkshire) × Duroc] growing pigs with an average body weight (BW) of 25.04 ± 1.44 kg were used in a 6-week experiment. The experimental treatments were as follows: CON, basal diet and; T1, basal diet + 100 mg/kg multi-enzyme. During the experiment, the pigs fed the diet with multi-enzyme supplementation had a higher gain to feed ratio (G/F) (p < 0.05) than the pigs fed the diet without multi-enzyme supplementation. On day 42, the pigs fed the diet with multi-enzyme supplementation had decreased H2S and NH3 emissions (p < 0.05) than the pigs fed the diet without multi-enzyme supplementation. However, no effect was observed on nutrient digestibility, blood profiles and fecal microbes among the treatments (p > 0.05). In conclusion, it is suggested that multi-enzyme supplementation in a corn and soybean meal based diet can partly improve the growth performance and noxious gas emission of growing pigs.

        Effects of supplemental glycerol polyethylene glycol ricinoleate in different energy density diets on the growth performance, blood profiles, nutrient utilization, and excreta gas emission of broilers: focus on dietary glycerol polyethylene glycol ricino

        This study evaluated the effects of glycerol polyethylene glycol ricinoleate (GPGR) supplementation in different energy density diets on the growth performance, blood profiles, excreta gas emission, and total tract apparent retention (TTAR) of nutrients in broilers. A total of 544 one-day-old male Ross broilers were used in a 35-day trial. The broilers were allocated into one of four treatment groups in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with two levels of energy densities (a normal energy or decreased energy density) and GPGR (0 and 0.035%). From day 18 to 35, the GPGR supplemented and normal energy density diet groups showed a significantly improved (p < 0.05) body weight gain (BWG). Meanwhile, the GPGR supplemented diet group had a significantly reduced (p < 0.05) feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to that of the nonsupplemented diet group. From day 0 to 35, the GPGR supplemented diet and the normal energy density diet groups had a significantly increased (p < 0.01) BWG and a reduced (p < 0.01) FCR. Moreover, GPGR supplementation tended to increase (p < 0.1) the TTAR of the dry matter (DM) compared with the non-supplemented diets. Likewise, the normal energy density diets had a significantly improved TTAR for the gross energy (GE) (p < 0.05) than that of the decreased energy density diets. No interactive effects were observed between the energy density and GPGR supplemented diets. In conclusion, both dietary GPGR supplementation and normal energy density diets had beneficial effects on the growth performance of broiler chickens without any adverse effects on blood profiles and excreta gas emission.

      • The Design of a Guide Device with Multi-Function to Aid Travel for Blind Person

        A design method of a guide device with multi-function presented in this paper, the multi-function contents of obstacle avoidance, azimuth guidance, banknote recognition and time broadcast. The hardware system of the guide device based on single-chip system STC89C52 and peripheral added eight expansion units: power supply unit, key input unit, ultrasonic detection unit, azimuth guidance unit, banknote recognition unit, clock Unit, phonetic unit and display unit. The functions were tested and results show that the device is suitable for sunny conditions whose best setting distance range is between 700mm to 1600mm and direction function is good showing in open environment, while the function of currency recognition has some limitations because of color identification. Comprehensive consideration the device can meet the blind person’s basic travel demand and has the characteristics of low-cost and stable performance.

        Experiences of Body Image Changes in Chinese Patients Living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Descriptive Qualitative Study

        Purpose: Body image changes are common among patients living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)because of the illness and related treatments. Currently, there is little known about how those patientsexperience and perceive their altered body image in the literature. The aim of this study was to explorethe experiences of body image changes in patients with IBD in China and to describe how those changesinfluence patients’ perception of body and self. Methods: This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. A total of 16 participants from three tertiaryhospitals in southeast China were recruited through purposive sampling combined with maximumvariation strategy. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and analyzed using conventionalcontent analysis method. Results: The following six themes were extracted: (1) “being a constrained person,” (2) “being a flawedperson,” (3) “being a disliked person,” (4) “being an alienated person,” (5) “being a reconciled person,”and (6) “being a blessed person.”Conclusion: With the diagnosis of IBD and its side effects of treatments, patients’ life changed significantlyand they were struggling to reinterpret their body and self. As a result, negative self-evaluations and/or positive self-evaluations towards themselves generated. Further studies are required to explore theunderlying mechanism and related influencing factors about how those different images were produced.

        Polydopamine (PDA) coatings with endothelial vascular growth factor (VEGF) immobilization inhibiting neointimal formation post zinc (Zn) wire implantation in rat aortas

        Background Bioresorbable stents are designed to provide temporary mechanical support to the coronary arteries and then slowly degrade in vivo to avoid chronic inflammation. Zinc (Zn) is a promising material for bioresorbable stents; However, it can cause inflammation and neointimal formation after being implanted into blood vessels. Methods To improve biocompatibility of Zn, we first coated it with polydopamine (PDA), followed by immobilization of endothelial vascular growth factor (VEGF) onto the PDA coatings. Adhesion, proliferation, and phenotype maintenance of endothelial cells (ECs) on the coated Zn were evaluated in vitro. Then, a wire aortic implantation model in rats mimicking endovascular stent implantation in humans was used to assess vascular responses to the coated Zn wires in vivo. Thrombosis in aortas post Zn wire implantation, degradation of Zn wires in vivo, neointimal formation surrounding Zn wires, and macrophage infiltration and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling in the neointimas were examined. Results In vitro data showed that the PDA-coated Zn encouraged EC adhesion, spreading, proliferation, and phenotype maintenance on its surfaces. VEGF functionalization on PDA coatings further enhanced the biocompatibility of Zn to ECs. Implantation of PDA-coated Zn wires into rat aortas didn’t cause thrombosis and showed a faster blood flow than pure Zn or the Zn wires coated with VEGF alone. In addition, the PDA coating didn’t affect the degradation of Zn wires in vivo. Besides, the PDA-coated Zn wires reduced neointimal formation, increased EC coverage, decreased macrophage infiltration, and declined aggrecan accumulation in ECM. VEGF immobilization onto PDA coatings didn’t cause thrombosis and affect Zn degradation in vivo as well, and further increased the endothelization percentage as compared to PDA coating alone, thus resulting in thinner neointimas. Conclusion These results indicate that PDA coatings with VEGF immobilization would be a promising approach to functionalize Zn surfaces to increase biocompatibility, reduce inflammation, and inhibit neointimal formation after Zn implantation in vivo.

        Temporal gas temperature of atmospheric pressure air plasma

        In this paper, temporal gas temperature in plasma was measured by Rayleigh scattering in a passive way since synchronization was difficult due to the randomness of current pulses. The plasma was generated between a 10 mm pin-to-plane gap connected to a H.V DC voltage through a 130 MΩ resistor and a skin sample was placed on a grounded plate. Even the plasma can be touched by a human hand without any feeling of warmth, the peak temperature could be 337 K then decrease to 295 K over 60 μs at 1 mm. Moreover, the applied voltage dramatically affects peak current and the peak temperature. Therefore, the transient “high” temperature cannot be touched and the so-called “cold” plasma might not be “cold”.

        A Corpus-Assisted Critical Discourse Analysis of South China Sea Issues in Chinese, American, and Philippine Newspapers

        With a corpus-assisted discourse analysis (CADA) on South China Sea (SCS) issues in Chinese, American, and Philippine newspapers over the past 10 years, this paper aimed to reveal ways of representing the SCS issues from three leading newspapers (China Daily, the Manila Times, and the New York Times) and expound the complicated relations between language use and the historical-socio-political contexts, which, in the end, provides valuable context for the study of the dispute between Japan and South Korea as well as other significant issues. The synchronic and diachronic analyses of the issues from 2010 to 2019 were conducted through a synergy of critical discourse analysis (CDA) and corpus linguistics (CL). The results showed that the representations in China Daily are generally cooperative negotiation-oriented. Those in the Manila Times were inclined toward being proactively and radically oriented during the Aquino III period, while they were moderately oriented during the Duterte period, which is characterized by instability. Those in the New York Times showed a tendency be militarization- and internationalization-oriented. The method used in this study enabled us to find semantic fields within text corpora to explore political issues connected to relevant countries.

        THE RIESZ DECOMPOSITION THEOREM FOR SKEW SYMMETRIC OPERATORS

        An operator T on a complex Hilbert space H is called skew symmetric if T can be represented as a skew symmetric matrix relative to some orthonormal basis for H. In this note, we explore the structure of skew symmetric operators with disconnected spectra. Using the classical Riesz decomposition theorem, we give a decomposition of certain skew symmetric operators with disconnected spectra. Several corollaries and illustrating examples are provided.

        3D models of bisphenol A and its metabolite 4-methyl-2,4-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl)-pent-1-ene (MBP) antagonist binding to human progesterone receptor

        Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a widely used primary monomer in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins that is known to have endocrine disrupting properties. BPA disrupts normal cell function by mimicking endogenous hormones. Recent studies have shown that a metabolite of BPA, 4-methyl-2,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)- pent-1-ene (MBP) is more toxic than the original compound. Here, we investigated the binding modes of BPA and MBP with the human progesterone receptor using in silico methods. The compounds were docked into the target protein’s binding site and free binding energies calculated. The results show that MBP has a relatively higher binding affinity than BPA and is similar to that of progesterone. This study suggests that MBP is a progesterone receptor antagonist and may have adverse effects on the normal physiological activities involving progesterone.
