Gesture, Gaze, and Bodily Cues in Mandarin Conversation: Two Case Studies

        Lee,Jee-won 한국사회언어학회 2012 사회언어학 Vol.20 No.1

Lee, Jee-won. 2012. Gesture, Gaze, and Bodily Cues in Mandarin Conversation: Two Case Studies. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 20(1). pp. 213-234. This study uses discourse analysis to illustrate some ways that non-verbal actions such as gaze, facial expression, and gesture work to contextualize the speech delivered in conversation. These bodily cues also enable participants to organize interactions as collaborative creations of meaning rather than simply a turn-by-turn exchange of speech. This study uses two excerpts from Mandarin Chinese conversations to illustrate how non-verbal cues help speakers and recipients to engage in collaborative action with one another. Speakers give recipients information about their stances vis-à-vis the speech they produce, and recipients use this information to manage their reactions to the speech they hear. Non-verbal actions also allow both parties to mutually regulate the flow of conversation. In both examples, it becomes clear that gaze, facial expression, and gesture are important elements of spoken interaction and that conversation as a whole should be understood as a contextual web of meaning that includes speech, body language, and overall social interaction.

Genetic Characterization of Haemagglutinin 1 Domain of Influenza B Viruses Isolated in Korea during $1988{\sim}1999$

        Shin, Gu-Choul,Na, Byoung-Kuk,Lee, Joo-Yeon,Ahn, Jung-Bae,Park, Jong-Won,Lee, Jin-Soo,Kim, Jee-Hee,Kim, Woo-Joo,Kang, Chun The Korean Society for Microbiology 2003 Journal of Bacteriology and Virology Vol.33 No.4

Although Korean influenza virus isolates have been genetically associated with the vaccine strains of the corresponding year, influenza B viruses have prevailed almost every year in Korea during the past decades. We have 'analyzed the genetic characteristics and evolutionary patterns of the haemagglutinin (HA) 1 domains of influenza B viruses isolated during 1988-1999 using direct RT-PCR and sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis of influenza B viruses isolated in Korea indicated that antigenically and genetically distinguishable strains of the lineage II and lineage III variants had been cocirculated. Variants prevailed in early 1990s are represented in 1996/97 and 1998/99 and some different variants have been co circulated geographically and prevailed concurrently in Korea. All HA1s of Korean isolates have amino acid substitutions mainly in the region between position 124 and 310, which was previously proposed an immunodominant region. Insertion-deletion patterns of the HA gene revealed that Korean influenza B viruses were evolved from Lee40 with different manner between lineage II and III viruses. Lineage III viruses were also divided into two groups as conserved group and inserted group, in relation to Lee40. But lineage II viruses had evolved with directional pattern. Antigenic index proposed that influenza B isolates prevailed since 1996/97 seasons might had emerged from the antigenic variants of a Seo1697-like virus and that new variants might appear from the lineage II viruses resulting in persistent prevalence in Korea.

Genotoxic effects of 3 T magnetic resonance imaging in cultured human lymphocytes

Lee, Joong Won,Kim, Myeong Seong,Kim, Yang Jee,Choi, Young Joo,Lee, Younghyun,Chung, Hai Won Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2011 Bioelectromagnetics Vol.32 No.7

Abstract

The clinical and preclinical use of high‐field intensity (HF, 3 T and above) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners have significantly increased in the past few years. However, potential health risks are implied in the MRI and especially HF MRI environment due to high‐static magnetic fields, fast gradient magnetic fields, and strong radiofrequency electromagnetic fields. In this study, the genotoxic potential of 3 T clinical MRI scans in cultured human lymphocytes in vitro was investigated by analyzing chromosome aberrations (CA), micronuclei (MN), and single‐cell gel electrophoresis. Human lymphocytes were exposed to electromagnetic fields generated during MRI scanning (clinical routine brain examination protocols: three‐channel head coil) for 22, 45, 67, and 89 min. We observed a significant increase in the frequency of single‐strand DNA breaks following exposure to a 3 T MRI. In addition, the frequency of both CAs and MN in exposed cells increased in a time‐dependent manner. The frequencies of MN in lymphocytes exposed to complex electromagnetic fields for 0, 22, 45, 67, and 89 min were 9.67, 11.67, 14.67, 18.00, and 20.33 per 1000 cells, respectively. Similarly, the frequencies of CAs in lymphocytes exposed for 0, 45, 67, and 89 min were 1.33, 2.33, 3.67, and 4.67 per 200 cells, respectively. These results suggest that exposure to 3 T MRI induces genotoxic effects in human lymphocytes. Bioelectromagnetics 32:535–542, 2011. © 2011 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.

      • A validation study of DNA methylation-based age prediction using semen in forensic casework samples

        Lee, Jee Won,Choung, Chong Min,Jung, Ju Yeon,Lee, Hwan Young,Lim, Si-Keun Elsevier 2018 Legal medicine Vol.31 No.-

Abstract

Previously, an age-predictive method based on DNA-methylation patterns in semen was developed, using three CpG sites (cg06304190 in the TTC7B gene, cg12837463, and cg06979108 in the NOX4 gene). Before considering the routine use of a new method in forensics, validation studies such as concordance and sensitivity tests are essential for obtaining expanded and more reliable forensic information. Here, we evaluated a previously described age-predictive method for semen for routine forensic use. Concordance testing showed a high correlation between the predicted and chronological age, with a mean absolute deviation from the chronological age of 4.8 years. Sensitivity testing suggested that age prediction with reliable accuracy and consistency was possible with >5 ng of bisulfite-converted DNA. We also confirmed the applicability of the age-predictive method in forensic casework, using forensic samples. Thus, the proposed method could serve as a very valuable forensics tool for accurate age prediction with semen samples.

Highlights

A validation study of a previously published age-predictive method was conducted.

Concordance testing showed a high correlation between the predicted and real age.

The method produced reproducible results with >5 ng of bisulfite-converted DNA.

Applicability of the method in forensic casework was confirmed.

Efficacy of Stellate Ganglion Block in Cholinergic Urticaria with Acquired Generalized Hypohidrosis

( Jee Hyun Shin ),( Do Wan Kim ),( Jong Yeun Yang ),( Won Il Lee ) 대한통증학회 2012 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.25 No.4

Cholinergic urticaria with acquired generalized hypohidrosis, and its pathophysiology is not well known. Autoimmunity to sweat glands or to acetylcholine receptors on sweat glands has been mentioned as one of the possible etiologies. Systemic steroid therapy, antihistamines, anticholinergics, and avoidance of the stimulatory situations are recommended for treatment. We experienced a case of cholinergic urticaria with acquired generalized hypohidrosis in a patient who had no other associated disease, and the symptoms eased after repeated bilateral stellate ganglion block. Stellate ganglion block normalized the elevated sympathetic tone and may relieve symptoms in patients with this condition.

      • Discovery of urinary metabolomic biomarkers for early detection of acute kidney injury

        Won, A Jin,Kim, Siwon,Kim, Yoon Gyoon,Kim, Kyu-Bong,Choi, Wahn Soo,Kacew, Sam,Kim, Kyeong Seok,Jung, Jee H.,Lee, Byung Mu,Kim, Suhkmann,Kim, Hyung Sik The Royal Society of Chemistry 2016 Molecular bioSystems Vol.12 No.1

The discovery of new biomarkers for early detection of drug-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) is clinically important. In this study, sensitive metabolomic biomarkers identified in the urine of rats were used to detect cisplatin-induced AKI. Cisplatin (10 mg kg(-1), i.p.) was administered to Sprague-Dawley rats, which were subsequently euthanized after 1, 3 or 5 days. In cisplatin-treated rats, mild histopathological alterations were noted at day 1, and these changes were severe at days 3 and 5. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (SCr) levels were significantly increased at days 3 and 5. The levels of new urinary protein-based biomarkers, including kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), glutathione S-transferase-alpha (GST-alpha), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), calbindin, clusterin, neutrophil, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), and osteopontin, were significantly elevated at days 3 and 5. Among urinary metabolites, trigonelline and 3-indoxylsulfate (3-IS) levels were significantly decreased in urine collected from cisplatin-treated rats prior to histological kidney damage. However, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), a hepatotoxicant, did not affect these urinary biomarkers. Trigonelline is closely associated with GSH depletion and results in insufficient antioxidant capacity against cisplatin-induced AKI. The predominant cisplatin-induced AKI marker appeared to be reduced in urinary 3-IS levels. Because 3-IS is predominantly excreted via active secretion in proximal tubules, a decrease is indicative of tubular damage. Further, urinary excretion of 3-IS levels was markedly reduced in patients with AKI compared to normal subjects. The area under the curve receiver operating characteristics (AUC-ROC) for 3-IS was higher than for SCr, BUN, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total protein, and glucose. Therefore, low urinary or high serum 3-IS levels may be more useful for early detection of AKI than conventional biomarkers.

Effect of Repeated Oral Health Education on the Oral Health of Preschool Children

        ( Jee-won Lee ),( Ha-na Choi ) 한국치위생과학회 2017 치위생과학회지 Vol.17 No.5

This study aimed to investigate the effect of repeated oral health education on the oral health of preschool children. This study classified the control group of children of 5∼6 years of age where the oral health education was conducted one time, and the experiment group where the oral health education was conducted 4 times. The oral health conditions of each group and their risk of developing dental caries were also assessed. No significant difference was observed in the participants in terms of general characteristics, oral health conditions, risk of developing dental caries, and oral health behavior after oral health education. The two groups did not show a significant difference (p<0.001) in dental plaque index before and after oral health education, and showed a significant difference (p<0.001) according to the number of education sessions. Before oral health education, the participants in both groups were brushing their teeth incorrectly. However, after the third session, 56.7% of the participants in the experimental group and 9.4% in the control group used the correct method of tooth brushing. A significant difference was observed between the two groups (p<0.05). In addition, when the tooth-brushing time was compared, the two groups showed a significant difference (p<0.001), and a significant difference was observed in terms of the number of education sessions (p<0.05). In summary, repeated oral health education had significant influences on the dental plaque index, tooth-brushing method, brushing occlusal surfaces, and tooth-brushing time. Therefore, when oral health education is carried out, repeated oral health education in children is more effective than one-time oral health education as reflected in the changes in dental plaque index and oral health behavior. Moreover, oral health education is considered effective in changing the oral health behavior of children when conducted at least 3 times.

Comprehensive Evaluation of the NeoBase 2 Non-derivatized MSMS Assay and Exploration of Analytes With Significantly Different Concentrations Between Term and Preterm Neonates

        Lee Beomki,Heo Won Young,Kim Jee Ah,Lee Hyun-Seung,Hwang Narae,Park Hyung-Doo,Sung Se In,Chang Yun Sil,Park Won Soon,Lee Soo-Youn 대한진단검사의학회 2023 Annals of Laboratory Medicine Vol.43 No.2

Background: Despite the popularity of the NeoBase 2 Non-derivatized MSMS assay (PerkinElmer, Turku, Finland), there are no reports of its comprehensive evaluation, including the ability to distinguish transient tyrosinemia of the newborn (TTN) from tyrosinemia type 1 (TYR 1) using succinylacetone (SUAC). No newborn screening (NBS) cutoffs for preterm neonates in the Korean population have been suggested. We evaluated the NeoBase 2 assay and identified analytes requiring different cutoffs in preterm neonates. Methods: Residual NBS dried blood spot samples and proficiency testing (PT) materials of the Newborn Screening Quality Assurance Program and the Korean Association of External Quality Assessment Service were used. Precision, accuracy, limit of detection (LOD), lower limit of quantification (LLOQ), linearity, recovery, carryover, and performance of SUAC were evaluated. Cutoffs were determined, and analytes requiring different cutoffs in preterm neonates were investigated. Results: Mean CVs for within-run and between-day precision were within 15%. Accuracy analysis indicated high agreement with in-house derivatized assay results and results of other PT participants. All analytes demonstrated acceptable LOD, LLOQ, and linearity. Recoveries were acceptable, except for SUAC. Carryover was negligible. Cutoffs were established for all analytes; Tyr, adenosine, and C20:0-lysophosphatidylcholine required different cutoffs in preterm neonates. Differential diagnosis of TYR 1 and TTN was successful with simultaneous Tyr and SUAC measurement. Conclusions: The NeoBase 2 assay demonstrated satisfactory performance. The additional analytes provide a wider diagnostic coverage, and the simultaneous measurement of Tyr and SUAC is efficient in excluding TYR 1. The new cutoffs for preterm neonates may decrease false-positive rates, without compromising diagnostic sensitivity.

      • High School Students` Perspectives on the Textbook Based on Storytelling

( Jee Hyun Park ),( Mi Ju Kim ),( Jae Won Cheong ),( Hang Yun Cho ),( Sung Sik Chu ),( Seung Ju Lee ),( Won June Moon ),( Sun Jae Park ) 한국수학교육학회 2013 수학교육 학술지 Vol.2013 No.1

The results of TIMSS 2011 shows that mathematical achievement levels of Korean students are one of the highest in the international society. On the back side of it, academic interest and confidence in mathematics is in the lowest level. As a measure to alleviate mathematical achievement levels adhering to its true value, a model mathematics textbook based on storytelling has been developed for high school (Kwon et al, 2012). Since the model textbook was developed by educational researchers and teachers, it needs to be reviewed in the perspective of high school students. Therefore, the research has investigated how high school students interpret the model textbook based on storytelling compared with conventional textbooks. Contents about ‘Probability’, ‘Complex numbers and Quadratic Equations’ from these two types of textbooks were reviewed by high school students. And their thoughts on each of the textbooks were analyzed through surveys and interviews. Survey questions were designed to ask students to compare two textbooks in three themes: explanation methods on mathematical concepts, inquiry process of mathematical principles, and retention effect. The results show that students understand mathematical concepts more deeply through the storytelling textbook, because the textbook explains mathematical concepts in the specific context of the story and students could be actively involved in characters of the story. Since various activities and discussions contained in the storytelling textbook enable students to approach mathematical principles in the bottom-up way rather than the top-down way, students could interpret and apply mathematical principles more easily. The storytelling textbook may require a longer time to make students understand certain materials, but it is expected that it aids the retention of what they have learned.

      • Case Reports : Primary granulocytic sarcoma of ovary

( Jee Young Jung ),( Min Jung Jung ),( Jee Young Oh ),( Mi Hyang Kim ),( Hang Goo Yun ),( Young Lim Oh ),( Tae Hwa Lee ),( Chun June Lee ),( Won Gyu Kim ) 대한산부인과학회 2010 Journal of Womens Medicine Vol.3 No.2

Primary granulocytic sarcoma of ovary is extremely rare presentation of acute non-lymphatic leukemia. Absence of high suspicion, it is often misdiagnosed with other ovarian malignancies. We describe a case of 37-years-old woman with ovarian mass who is identified as primary granulocytic sarcoma of ovary without any coexisting hematologic disorders.
