Epithin/PRSS14 is a membrane serine protease that plays a key role in tumor progression. The protease exists on the cell surface until its ectodomain shedding, which releases most of the extracellular domain. Previously, we showed that the remaining portion on the membrane undergoes intramembrane proteolysis, which results in the liberation of the intracellular domain and the intracellular domainmediated gene expression. In this study, we investigated how the intramembrane proteolysis for the nuclear function is initiated. We observed that ectodomain shedding of epithin/PRSS14 in mouse breast cancer 4T1 cells increased depending on environmental conditions and was positively correlated with invasiveness of the cells and their proinvasive cytokine production. We identified selenite as an environmental factor that can induce ectodomain shedding of the protease and increase C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) secretion in an epithin/PRSS14-dependent manner. Additionally, by demonstrating that the expression of the intracellular domain of epithin/PRSS14 is sufficient to induce CCL2 secretion, we established that epithin/PRSS14- dependent shedding and its subsequent intramembrane proteolysis are responsible for the metastatic conversion of 4T1 cells under these conditions. Consequently, we propose that epithin/PRSS14 can act as an environment-sensing receptor that promotes cancer metastasis by liberating the intracellular domain bearing transcriptional activity under conditions promoting ectodomain shedding.
Anti-diabetic effects of natural products an overview of therapeutic strategies
Jiyoung Park,Hyeung-Jin Jang,H.-J. Jang 대한독성 유전단백체 학회 2017 Molecular & cellular toxicology Vol.13 No.1
Diabetes mellitus, a large part of metabolic disorder, is characterized by persistent hyperglycemia. The number of people suffering from diabetes is rapidly increasing worldwide, and the disease is often accompanied by severe complications such as heart disease, diabetic kidney failure, and retinal disease due to the high blood glucose levels over a long period of time. Comprehensive diabetic management is important, including efforts to lower the blood glucose level and body weight as well as to prevent insulin resistance. Although various prescriptions for diabetes have been used as therapeutic medicines, many researchers have long studied this disease in an effort to find new effective substances derived from natural products without side effects or toxicity. In the research on natural product, plants can have toxic or insufficient effects and unexplained outcomes, but the possibilities are unlimited. Here, we explain medicinal plants with anti- diabetic effects in a comprehensive manner, focusing on hormonal regulation and metabolic regulation, and describe active components and natural products based on the vast amount of research and on clinical trials. This review suggests that medicinal plants can used to treat diabetic mellitus through hormonal regulation and metabolic regulation as a therapeutic medication.
Toenail selenium levels and prevalence of dyslipidaemia among Korean adults
Jang, Jiyoung,Morris, J. Steven,Park, Kyong Cambridge University Press 2017 The British journal of nutrition Vol.118 No.6
Abstract
Multiple studies have elucidated the antioxidant properties of Se, which are now well known among the nutrition and biomedical science communities. Recently, considerable interest has been focused on the possible association between Se exposure and risk of metabolic disease, such as lipid dysregulation; however, there is limited epidemiological data on this topic. The present study aimed to investigate associations between toenail Se levels and dyslipidaemia or individual lipid levels, and to examine the effect of dietary supplement use on these associations. We analysed baseline data from a cohort in the Yeungnam area, including 232 men and 269 women. Information on demographic, dietary and lifestyle characteristics was obtained through a self-reported questionnaire. Se levels in toenail specimens were measured using neutron activation analysis. Fasting blood lipid levels were measured during medical examinations. After adjusting for multiple confounding variables, we observed no association between toenail Se levels and dyslipidaemia or individual lipid profiles. However, the association was modified by dietary supplement use. Among the supplement users, higher toenail Se levels were associated with a higher prevalence of lipid dysregulation, whereas non-users exhibited a lower prevalence of lipid dysregulation. Associations between toenail Se levels, lipid levels and dyslipidaemia may be influenced by taking dietary supplements. Future large-scale, prospective cohort studies should be conducted to further evaluate the association between Se levels in the body and metabolic health effects in light of increasing rates of dietary supplement use.

The Impact of Nanomaterials in Immune System
Jang, Jiyoung,Lim, Dae-Hyoun,Choi, In-Hong The Korean Association of Immunobiologists 2010 Immune Network Vol.10 No.3
As a nanotechnology has been actively applied to the overall areas of scientific fields, it is necessary to understand the characteristic features, physical behaviors and the potential effects of exposure to nanomaterials and their toxicity. In this article we review the immunological influences induced by several nanomaterials and emphasize establishment of the animal models to estimate the impact of these nanomaterials on development of immunological diseases.
Vol.2022 No.6
In this study, the latest heat exchanger technology to improve the performance of the VRF system is introduced. The heat exchanger is a key component in VRF system performance and in order to respond effectively to various loads, a technology has been developed that divides the heat exchanger into three passages through valve control and realizes optimal load-response operation by changing the flow passage. This technology enables bypass operation to respond to a small load under heating overload conditions, and prevents freezing of the lower end of the heat exchanger to supply continuous heating operation. In addition, it was possible to increase the operating efficiency by about 20% by changing the heat exchanger flow path during cooling and heating operation.

The therapeutic effects of Yongdamsagan-tang on autoimmune hepatitis models
Park, Jiyoung,Kim, Hayeon,Lee, In-Seung,Kim, Kang-Hoon,Kim, Yumi,Na, Yun-Cheol,Lee, Jang-Hoon,Jang, Hyeung-Jin EDITIONS SCIENTIFIQUES ELSEVIER 2017 BIOMEDICINE AND PHARMACOTHERAPY Vol.94 No.-

Abstract

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is an immunity disorder that is the result of antibodies in the liver tissue of the patient that are attacked by activated immune cells due to an unknown cause. In this study, we aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of Yongdamsagan-tang (YST) extracts and confirm effects on autoimmune hepatitis models as the therapeutic agent using the YST extracted by various solvents. YST, a mixture of 11 herbal extracts, is known in traditional Korean medicine as a widely used treatment for inflammatory diseases. We proposed the AIH-condition in vitro model by the addition of recombinant IL-17A and then observed several markers linked to AIH symptoms, including an increase of IL-6 expression, lipid accumulation, and fibrosis. In AIH-condition hepatic cell model, YST reduced IL-6 expression and lipid accumulation caused by treatment of IL-17 combination in hepatocyte cells. Also, YST blocked several activated fibrosis factors including transforming growth factor-β (TGF- β1), collagen type 1 (Col-α1(I)), and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) in liver stellate cells. Furthermore, pretreatment with YST protected hepatic damage and reduces histological injury by suppressing apoptosis mediator and inflammatory cytokines expression in concanavalin A (Con A)-induced autoimmune hepatitis mice model. The findings here improve our understanding of YST extracted by 80% ethanol, suggesting that YST can be used as a therapeutic treatment for AIH.
