Vol.18 No.-

This study was conducted to measure and compare the salivary cotinine concentration between smokers and nonsmokers, and to investigate the effect on the exposure to environmental tobacco smoke(ETS) with housewives, living on an apartment of Korea. Saliva samples were taken from all volunteers and salivary cotinine was analyzed by a developed radioimmunoassay(RIA) method. The median salivary cotinine levels were 52.8±12.6 ng/ml and 44.6± 9.7 ng/ml in male smokers and in female ones, respectively, and they were 4.3±2.1 ng/ml and 2.9±3.1 ng/ml in male nonsmokers and in female ones, respectively. In addition, average salivary cotinine levels were 3.8±2.7 ng/ml in housewives from smoking homes and 2.4±2.4ng/ml in ones from nonsmoking homes. Results obtained from the analysis of salivary cotinine demonstrate that smokers had a significantly higher concentration of salivary cotinine than nonsmoker. But, there was no significant difference in the salivary cotinine concentration for housewives living in apartment between with smoking husband and with nonsmoking husband.

        공필구,유영성,이종국,김환,박순자,Gong, Pil-Gu,Yoo, Young-Sung,Lee, Jong-Kook,Kim, Hwan,Park, Soon-Ja 한국재료학회 1997 한국재료학회지 Vol.7 No.2

Perovskite $BaTiO_3$ thin films on stainless steel substrate were prepared by using electrochemical reduction method in solution of $TiCl_4\;and\;Ba(N0_3)_2$. According to current density and electrolysis time. the morphology and thickness of film were varied. Ra/'Ti atomic ratio in $BaTiO_3$ film was controlled by Ha/Ti atomic ratio in solution. Although the excess $TiO_2{\cdot}nH_2O$ film was coated in initial stage of electrolysis. UiilTi atomic ratio in film was nearly constant in later stage. $BaTiO_3$ film precursor was obtained under the condition of $1OmA/cm^2$ current density and Smin electrolysis time. $BaTiO_2$ thin films with perovskite phase were formed 11,. the heat treatment above $500^{\circ}$.

        공필구,이종국,곽효섭,박순자,김환,Gong, Pil-Gu,Lee, Jong-Kook,Kwak, Heo-Seop,Park, Soon-Ja,Kim, Hwan 한국재료학회 1996 한국재료학회지 Vol.6 No.10

      • Inhibition of Monoamine Oxidase B by Cigarette Smoke Constituents

        Lim, Heung-Bin,Sohn, Hyug-Ok,Lee, Young-Gu,Moon, Ja-Young,Kang, Young-Kook,Kim, Yong-Ha,Lee, Un-Chul,Lee, Dong-Wook The Korean Society of Tobacco Science 1997 한국연초학회지 Vol.19 No.2

Cigarette smoking is known to suppress both 1-methy14-phenyl-155,Ltetrahydropy-ridine (MPTP)-induced parkinsonism and idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the precise mechanism underlying its protective action against PD is not clearly elucidated yet. In order to find possible clue on the mechanism of protective action of smoking, we investigated the inhibitory effect of cigarette smoke components on rat brain mitochondria1 monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B), responsible enzyme for the activation of MPTP to its toxic metabolitesr and identified the components having an inhibitory potency on this enzyme from cigarette smoke. Total 31 eligible constituents including nicotine were selected from cigarette smoke condensates via solvents partitioning and silica gel chromatographic separation, and inhibitory potencies of 19 components on MAO-B were determined. Hydroquinone and methylcatechol, the phenolic components, showed the strongest inhibitory potencies on MAO-B activity in the components tested. 3,4-Dihydroxybenzylamino, myosmine and indole in basic fracton, eugenol in phenolic fraction, and farnesol in neutral fraction also inhibited the enzyme activity dose-dependently. Among tobacco alkaloids tested only myosmine was effective for the inhibition of this enzyme. These results suggest that the decrease in MAO-B activity by such components derived from cigarette smoke seems to be related to the suppression of MPTP-induced neurotoxicity and to the less incidence of Parkinson's disease in smokers than in nonsmokers.

Influence of Work Characteristics on the Association Between Police Stress and Sleep Quality

        Ma, Claudia C.,Hartley, Tara A.,Sarkisian, Khachatur,Fekedulegn, Desta,Mnatsakanova, Anna,Owens, Sherry,Gu, Ja Kook,Tinney-Zara, Cathy,Violanti, John M.,Andrew, Michael E. Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2019 Safety and health at work Vol.10 No.1

Background: Police officers' stress perception, frequency of stressful events (stressors), and police work characteristics may contribute to poor sleep quality through different mechanisms. Methods: We investigated associations of stress severity (measured by stress rating score) and frequency of stressors with sleep quality and examined the influence of police work characteristics including workload, police rank, prior military experience, and shift work on the associations. Participants were 356 police officers (256 men and 100 women) enrolled in the Buffalo Cardio-Metabolic Occupational Police Stress Study from 2004 to 2009. A mean stress rating score and mean frequency of stressors occurring in the past month were computed for each participant from the Spielberger Police Stress Survey data. Sleep quality was assessed using the global score derived from the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index survey. Linear associations of the stress rating score and frequency of stressors with sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index global score) were tested. Age, sex, race/ethnicity, and smoking status were selected as potential confounders. Results: The stress rating score was positively and independently associated with poor sleep quality (${\beta}=0.17$, p = 0.002). Only workload significantly modified this association (${\beta}=0.23$, p = 0.001 for high workload group; p-interaction = 0.109). The frequency of stressors was positively and independently associated with poor sleep quality (${\beta}=0.13$, p = 0.025). Only police rank significantly modified the association (${\beta}=0.007$, p = 0.004 for detectives/other executives; p-interaction = 0.076). Conclusion: Both police officers' perception of stress severity and the frequency of stressors are associated with poor sleep quality. Stress coping or sleep promotion regimens may be more beneficial among police officers reporting high workloads.
