Saccharide utilizations for the growth by Bifidobacterium longum and Bifdobacterium breve were compared. B. longum fermented glucose more rapidly than lactose as a carbon source whereas B. breve fermented lactose at a rate higher than that of glucose. The highest cell concentration, in the case of B. longum, was obtained when cultivated in a jar fermentor that contained modified MRS medium that half the beef extract was replaced by the same amount of tuna extract, and that pH was controlled at 6.0. B. breve showed the best growth when grown in a jar fermentor containing the MRS medium with lactose instead of glucose, controlled at pH 6.0. The optimal concentration of peptone in MRS medium for the growth of B. breve was 5 g/ℓ.
Isolated intracranial fibromuscular dysplasia of the posterior cerebral artery

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a nonatherosclerotic, noninflammatory arterial disease that most commonly affects the renal and internal carotid arteries, but intracranial FMD is very rare. We report a patient with FMD involving the posterior cerebral arteries (PCAs). A 24year old female was presented with a 4day history of right homonymous hemianopsia with throbbing headache in the left temporo-occipital area. The brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an acute ischemic stroke in the left PCA territory, while the Time of Flight (TOF) magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) showed segmental luminal irregularities in the left proximal PCA. The conventional angiogram revealed the “string of beads” appearance, a characteristic that is pathognomonic for FMD. The patient’s inhospital clinical course was stable, while there was no recurrence of stroke. This is the second report of FMD of the PCA. Notwithstanding incredibly rare incidences of isolated intracranial FMD and nonspecific findings of MRA, such a pathophysiology should be considered as the cause for a stroke in young patients, especially those with no cardiovascular risk factor.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Isolated intracranial FMD with the “string of beads” appearance is very rare. </LI> <LI> In young patients without the risk of atherosclerosis, intracranial FMD should be considered as a pathophysiology of stroke. </LI> <LI> TOF-MRA may show unclear “string of beads” appearance such as segmental luminal irregularities in intracranial FMD. </LI> </UL> </P>

<P>Taxol (paclitaxel) is a potent anticancer drug that has been found to be effective against several tumor types, including cervical cancer. However, the exact mechanism underlying the antitumor effects of paclitaxel is poorly understood. Here, paclitaxel induced the apoptosis of cervical cancer HeLa cells and correlated with the enhanced activation of caspase-3 and TAp73, which was strongly inhibited by TAp73beta small interfering RNA (siRNA). In wild-type activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3)-overexpressed cells, paclitaxel enhanced apoptosis through increased alpha and beta isoform expression of TAp73; however, these events were attenuated in cells containing inactive COOH-terminal-deleted ATF3 [ATF3(DeltaC)] or ATF3 siRNA. In contrast, paclitaxel-induced ATF3 expression did not change in TAp73beta-overexpressed or TAp73beta siRNA-cotransfected cells. Furthermore, paclitaxel-induced ATF3 translocated into the nucleus where TAp73beta is expressed, but not in ATF3(DeltaC) or TAp73beta siRNA-transfected cells. As confirmed by the GST pull-down assay, ATF3 bound to the DNA-binding domain of p73, resulting in the activation of p21 or Bax transcription, a downstream target of p73. Overexpression of ATF3 prolonged the half-life of TAp73beta by inhibiting its ubiquitination and thereby enhancing its transactivation and proapoptotic activities. Additionally, ATF3 induced by paclitaxel potentiated the stability of TAp73beta, not its transcriptional level. Chromatin immunoprecipitation analyses show that TAp73beta and ATF3 are recruited directly to the p21 and Bax promoter. Collectively, these results reveal that overexpression of ATF3 potentiates paclitaxel-induced apoptosis of HeLa cells, at least in part, by enhancing TAp73beta's stability and its transcriptional activity. The investigation shows that ATF3 may function as a tumor-inhibiting factor through direct regulatory effects on TAp73beta, suggesting a functional link between ATF3 and TAp73beta.</P>

고출력 발광다이오드(LED)는 장수명, 저전력, 친환경 등의 장점이 있어서 기존 조명 대체용 조명 광원으로 각광받고 있으나 LED조명 온도 상승은 열화 및 Wire 단선을 야기하여 고장을 일으킨다. 고장 제거 및 고장 재발 방지를 위해 발생 고장의 고장모드에 대한 체계적인 분석 과정이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 조명용 고출력 LED 케이스 제거 방법인 Decapsulation에 대해 알아보고자 한다.

포장두부의 안정성을 측정하고자 하는 미생물실험은 결과가 1∼2일 후에야 나오므로 생산 또는 판매현장에서 측정하는 것은 불가능하다. 바로 측정하여 결과를 예측할 수 있는 간접지표는 유통기한이 짧은 식품의 경우 더욱 필요한 상황이다. 따라서, 본 연구는 포장두부 충진수의 탁도 및 pH를 간접지표로 이용하여 미생물적 안정성을 측정할 수 있는지를 확인하였다. 또한, 저온살균(70℃)을 통하여 초기 미생물수준을 낮추므로 충진수의 탁도 및 pH와 미생물수준의 관계를 보다 정확하게 측정, 비교하였다. 저온살균시 포장두부의 일반성분에 영향을 미치는지를 분석하였는데 두부의 수분, 조단백, 조지방, 회분 등의 일반성분 조성에는 영향을 미치지 않는다. 저장성(10℃) 에 있어서는 부패의 초기수준을 10^7∼10^8CFU/g 으로 할때, 무처리 대조군의 경우 4일 경과후 부패가 진행된 것에 비하여 저온살균처리 5분의 경우 7일, 10분의 경우 10일 경과후 미생물 수준이 부패 초기수준에 도달하였으며, 20분 이상처리군의 경우 15일 경과 시점까지 10^7 CFU/g에 미치지 않았다. 포장두부에서 두부에 존재하는 미생물의 증가와 두부 충진수의 탁도 및 pH는 상관관계가 있어서 두부의 미생물의 10^5 CFU/g 수준에 이르면 충진수의 탁도는 0.1 이상의 값을 나타내었고 부패의 초기수준에 이르면 충진수의 탁도는 1.0 이상의 값을 나타내었다. pH의 경우 두부의 미생물의 10^5 CFU/g 수준에 이르면 충진수의 pH는 5.6 이하의 값을 나타내었고 부패의 초기수준에 이르면 5.0 이하의 값을 나타내었다. 포장두부에서 간접지표로 선택한 충진수의 pH의 탁도는 두부의 미생물수와 밀접한 관계를 나타내었다.
