<P>A new fluoro-chromogenic chemosensor based on BODIPY-functionalized Fe(3)O(4)@SiO(2) core/shell nanoparticles 1 has been prepared. Chemosensor 1 exhibits a high affinity and selectivity for Pb(2+) over competing metal ions tested. Moreover, confocal microscopy, and flow cytometry experiments established that 1 can be used for detecting Pb(2+) levels within living cell.</P>

Background and objective: This study was conducted to analyze users’ behavior, recognition, and satisfaction toward forest trails and exercise facilities in urban mountainous forests, Jinju City, South Korea. Methods: Users’ characteristics, visit motives, and satisfaction with forest trails and exercise facilities in three urban mountainous forests were surveyed from September to October 2020. The data of 300 respondents were analyzed using frequency, descriptive, and regression analysis. Results: There was a high percentage of users aged 51 or older (62.0%). Most users visited regardless of weekdays or weekends, every day or 2-3 times a week, and stayed for 1-2 hours. Most were using the forest trails and outdoor fitness facilities. Hiking or walking showed the highest frequency in visit motives, followed by using outdoor fitness facilities. Overall satisfaction with forest trails was high at 3.74-3.93 on a 5-point Likert scale, which was affected by the landscape and environment of small private arable lands around forest trails and convenient facilities such as handrails and information boards. Overall satisfaction with outdoor fitness facilities was 3.34-3.62, which was affected by harmony with forest landscape and facility maintenance. Overall satisfaction with indoor badminton courts was 3.01-3.08, which was affected by harmony with forest landscape. Conclusion: For improving overall satisfaction, it is crucial to maintain and repair the width and surface of forest trails, but renovating the landscape and environment of small private arable lands and exercise facilities may be more critical. It is desirable to improve and maintain the function and landscape of outdoor fitness facilities and to relocate indoor badminton courts to the outskirts or boundaries of the mountainous forests. To provide various leisure and recreation activities, the creation of a forest bathing place will be first necessary, followed by a family recreation place and outdoor learning classroom.
A computed tomography-based analysis of the structure of the mandible according to age and sex

Background: The primary objectives of mandibular surgery are to achieve optimal occlusion, low sensory disturbance, and adequate fixation with early movement. In-depth knowledge of the mandibular structure is required to achieve these goals. This study used computed tomography (CT) to evaluate the mandibular cortical thickness and cancellous space according to age and sex. Methods: We enrolled 230 consecutive patients, aged 20 to 50 years, who underwent CT scanning. The cortex and cancellous space centered around the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) canal were measured at two specific locations: the lingula and second molar region. Statistical analysis of differences according to increasing age and sex was performed. Results: The t-test revealed that the cancellous space and cortical thickness differed significantly with respect to the threshold of 35 years of age. Both cortical thickness and cancellous space in the molar region were negatively correlated with age. Meanwhile, both cortical thickness and cancellous space in the lingula region showed a positive correlation with age. With respect to sex, significant differences in the cancellous space at the molar region and the cortical thickness at the lingula were observed. However, no further statistically significant differences were observed in other variables with respect to sex. The sum of each measurement on the mandibular body reflected the safe distance from the surface of the outer cortex to the IAN canal. The safe distances also showed statistically significant differences between those above and below 35 years of age. Conclusion: Knowledge of the anatomical structure of the mandible and of changes in bone structure is crucial to ensure optimal surgical outcomes and avoid damage to the IAN. CT examination is useful to identify changes in the bone structure, and these should be taken into account in the planning of surgery for older patients.

<p>A new fluorescence receptor based on BODIPY-immobilized silica nanoparticles (<B>BODIPY-SiO2</B>) exhibits a high affinity and selectivity for Pb2+ over competing metal ions in water. An overall emission change of <I>ca.</I> 100-fold at the emission maximum was observed for Pb2+. The fluorescence receptor <B>BODIPY-SiO2</B> can remove 97% and 95% of the initial 100 ppb Pb2+ from human blood and waste solution, respectively. Experiments show the fluorescence receptor <B>BODIPY-SiO2</B> can be a potentially useful and effective agent for the selective separation and rapid removal of Pb2+<I>in vivo</I>. We also prepared a portable chemosensor kit by coating a 4 μm thick film of <B>BODIPY-SiO2</B> onto a glass substrate. We found that this <B>BODIPY-SiO2</B> film detects Pb2+ ions at pH 7.4 with a sensitivity of 3.2 nM. Finally, we tested the effect of pH on <B>BODIPY-SiO2</B> with Pb2+ ions between pH 3.0 and 11.0. The fluorescence changes of <B>BODIPY-SiO2</B> were almost constant between pH 3 and 11. The results imply that the <B>BODIPY-SiO2</B> film is applicable as a portable chemosensor for detection of Pb2+ ions in the environmental field.</p> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>The optical sensing abilities of a BODIPY-based receptor immobilized on mesoporous silica (<B>BODIPY-SiO2</B>) were investigated. <B>BODIPY-SiO2</B> recognized and separated Pb2+ with a high degree of selectivity among a mixture of heavy metal ions in aqueous solution. <img src='http://pubs.rsc.org/ej/AN/2011/c1an15828g/c1an15828g-ga.gif'> </P>
