Mechanical Properties of Thermoplastic Composite Reinforced Porous Carbon
Hwang, Taek-Sung,Park, Jin-Won,Song, Hae-Young,Hwang, Eui-Hwan 한국탄소학회 2000 Carbon Letters Vol.1 No.2
Porous carbon from charcoal filled polypropylene composites were prepared and their mechanical properties were evaluated. In preparing the composites, crosslinking agent (sodium benzonate) were used in order to improve the bonding force between matrix and fillers. In this study, the effects of charcoal powder and sodium benzonate concentration on the mechanical properties and interface phenomena on the composites were evaluated. The mechanical properties of composites increased progressively with the decrease of filler loading. In the case of addition of the crosslinking agent into the composite, the mechanical properties were increased and showed maximum value at the 3 wt% concentration of sodium benzonate. According to the result of the TGA, the weight loss of composite according to crosslinking agent was not observed and initial thermal degradation temperature of composite reinforced charcoal was located at $390^{\circ}C$.

The hydrophobic ligand-containing hollow polypropylene (PP) membranes were synthesized by the mutual radiation induced graft copolymerization with glycidylmethacrylate (GMA) onto hollow PP membrane followed by the subsequent functionalization with L-phenylalanine. FT-IR, elemental analysis and UV spectroscopy were utilized to characterize copolymer composition, and degree of grafting, functionalization conversion and ${\gamma}$-globulins adsorption. The degree of grafting on the PP surface increased with the reaction time and total dose of E-beam. In the subsquent functionalization, the amount of L-phenylalanine increased with the increase in the degree of grafting and the degree of conversion was about 30%. The ${\gamma}$-globulins adsorption experiments showed that adsorption capacity had a maximum value at pH 8. The ${\gamma}$-globulins adsorption capacity in the basic pH region was higher than in the acidic pH region.
UV-Induced Graft Polymerization of Polypropylene-g-glycidyl methacrylate Membrane in the Vapor Phase
Hwang, Taek-Sung,Park, Jin-Won The Polymer Society of Korea 2003 Macromolecular Research Vol.11 No.6
UV-induced graft polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) to a polypropylene (PP) membrane was carried out in the vapor phase with benzophenone (BP) as a photoinitiator. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized to characterize the copolymer. The degree of grafting increased with increasing reaction time, increased UV irradiation source intensity, and increased immersion concentration of the BP solution. The optimum synthetic condition for the PP-g-GMA membrane was obtained with a reaction time of 2 hrs, a UV irradiation source intensity of 450 W, and an immersion concentration of the BP solution of 0.5 mol/L. The pure water flux decreased upon increasing the degree of grafting and increasing the amount of diethylamino functional group introduced. The analysis of AFM and SEM images shows that the graft chains and diethylamino groups of PP-g-GMA grew on the PP membrane surface, resulting in a change in surface morphology.

Resistance to isoniazid (INH), which is one of the most important drugs in Mycobacterium tuberculosis chemotherapy, has been associated with mutations in genes encoding the mycobacterial catalse-peroxidase (katG), the enoyl acyl carrier protein (ACP) reductase (inhA), alkyl hydroperoxide reductase (ahpC), beta-ketoacyl acyl carrier protein synthase (kasA), and NADH dehydrogenase (ndh). In this study, we examined INH-resistance related genes in 50 INH-resistant and 24 INH-susceptible isolates by PCR-sequence analysis. In brief, mutations at the katG gene were found at codon 315 alone (2/50), at codon 463 alone (19/50), and both at 315 and 463 (29/50). However, while mutations at codon 315 were only detected in INH-resistant isolates, mutations at codon 463 were also detected in INH-susceptible isolates indicating mutations at 463 alone do not seem to confer resistance to INH. Similar to the case of katG 463, some of inhA mutations were also found among INH-susceptible isolates. For example, whereas mutations at 8 upstream of the start codon (UPS) and 15 UPS of the inhA gene were detected only in INH-resistant isolates, mutations at 101, 115, and 125 UPS were detected only in INH-susceptible isolates. Many different kinds of mutations were detected in INHresistant isolates at ahpC, oxyR gene, and intergenic region of the oxyR-ahpC genes. Howerver, the mutations were not found oxyR and the intergenic regions in INH-susceptible isolates. No mutations were found at either kasA or at ndh gene among INH-resistant isolates. In conclusion, some of mutations such as katG 315, inhA promotor region, and oxyR-ahpC seem to be strongly related to INH-resistance. Currently we are developing a molecular diagnostic method based on these results.
