Practical Implementation of an Interleaved Boost Converter for Electric Vehicle Applications
Wen, Huiqing,Su, Bin The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2015 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.15 No.4
This study presents a practical implementation of a multi-mode two-phase interleaved boost converter for fuel cell electric vehicle application. The main operating modes, which include two continuous conducting modes and four discontinuous conducting modes, are discussed. The boundaries and transitions among these modes are analyzed with consideration of the inductor parasitic resistance. The safe operational area is analyzed through a comparison of the different operating modes. The output voltage and power characteristics with open-loop or closed-loop operation are also discussed. Key performance parameters, including the DC voltage gain, input ripple current, output ripple voltage, and switch stresses, are presented and supported by simulation and experimental results.

This paper proposed an unified dual-phase-shift (UDPS) control for dual active bridge (DAB) converters in order to improve efficiency for a wide output power range. Different operating modes of UDPS are characterized with respect to the reactive current distribution. The proposed UDPS has the same output power capability with conventional phase-shift (CPS) method. Furthermore, its implementation is simple since only the change of the leading phase-shift direction is required for different operating power range. The proposed UDPS control can minimize both the inductor rms current and the circulating reactive current for various voltage conversion ratios and load conditions. The optimal phase-shift pairs for two bridges of DAB converter are derived with respect to the comprehensive reactive power loss model, including the reactive components delivered from the load and back to the source. Simulation and experimental results are illustrated and explained with details. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified in terms of reactive power losses minimization and efficiency improvement.

This paper focuses on a systematical and in-depth analysis of the reactive power and soft-switching regions of Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converters with dual-phase-shift (DPS) control to achieve high efficiency in a wide operating range. The key features of the DPS operating modes are characterized and verified by analytical calculation and experimental tests. The mathematical expressions of the reactive power are derived and the reductions of the reactive power are illustrated with respect to a wide range of output power and voltage conversion ratios. The ZVS soft-switching boundary of the DPS is presented and one more leg with ZVS capability is achieved compared with the CPS control. With the selection of the optimal operating mode, the optimal phase-shift pair is determined by performance indices, which include the minimum peak or rms inductor current. All of the theoretical analysis and optimizations are verified by experimental tests. The experimental results with the DPS demonstrate the efficiency improvement for different load conditions and voltage conversion ratios.

Photovoltaic Modified β-Parameter-based MPPT Method with Fast Tracking
Xingshuo Li,Huiqing Wen,Lin Jiang,Eng Gee Lim,Yang Du,Chenhao Zhao 전력전자학회 2016 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.16 No.1
Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is necessary for photovoltaic (PV) power system application to extract the maximum possible power under changing irradiation and temperature conditions. The β-parameter-based method has many advantages over conventional MPPT methods; such advantages include fast tracking speed in the transient stage, small oscillations in the steady state, and moderate implementation complexity. However, a problem in the implementation of the conventional beta method is the choice of an appropriate scaling factor N, which greatly affects both the steady-state and transient performance. Therefore, this paper proposes a modified β-parameter-based method, and the determination of the N is discussed in detail. The study shows that the choice of the scaling factor N is determined by the changes of the value of β during changes in irradiation or temperature. The proposed method can respond accurately and quickly during changes in irradiation or temperature. To verify the proposed method, a photovoltaic power system with MPPT function was built in Matlab/Simulink, and an experimental prototype was constructed with a solar array emulator and dSPACE. Simulation and experimental results are illustrated to show the advantages of the improved β-parameter-based method with the optimized scaling factor.
Hybrid Control and Protection Scheme for Inverter Dominated Microgrids
Xiaotong Xu,Huiqing Wen,Lin Jiang,Yihua Hu 전력전자학회 2017 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.17 No.3
With the high penetration of various sustainable energy sources, the control and protection of Microgrids has become a challenging problem considering the inherent current limitation feature of inverter-based Distributed Generators (DGs) and the bidirectional power flow in Microgrids. In this paper, a hybrid control and protection scheme is proposed, which combines the traditional inverse-time overcurrent protection with the biased differential protection for different feeders with different kinds of loads. It naturally accommodates various control strategies such as P-Q control and V-f control. The parameter settings of the protection scheme are analyzed and calculated through a fast Fourier transform algorithm, and the stability of the control strategy is discussed by building a small signal model in MATLAB. Different operation modes such as the grid-connected mode, the islanding mode, and the transitions between these two modes are ensured. A Microgrid model is established in PSCAD and the analysis results show that a Microgrid system can be effectively protected against different faults such as the single phase to ground and the three phase faults in both the grid-connected and islanded operation modes.

Design and Evaluation of Contactless Inductive Energy Transfer System
Hengyang Luo,Huiqing Wen 전력전자학회 2015 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.2015 No.6
This paper presents a contactless energy transfer system that can transfer energy with high efficient from primary side to secondary side with an air gap from 0 to 7mm via electromagnetic resonant coupling. A phase-locked loop is designed and a double closed-loop feedback design is adopted to track the optimum working frequency and protect the system from overcurrent. The series-parallel compensation framework is adopted to keep both side coils work in resonant condition. Simulation and experimental results are illustrated to show the effectiveness of the inductive energy transfer system.
