Simultaneous Single-Position Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion Surgery and Unilateral Percutaneous Pedicle Screw Fixation for Spondylolisthesis

        Hui Lv,Yu Sheng Yang,Jian Hong Zhou,Yuan Guo,Hui Chen,Fei Luo,Jian Zhong Xu,Zhong Rong Zhang,Ze Hua Zhang 대한척추신경외과학회 2023 Neurospine Vol.20 No.3

Objective: To evaluate the clinical and radiological efficacy of a combine of lateral single screw-rod and unilateral percutaneous pedicle screw fixation (LSUP) for lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) in the treatment of spondylolisthesis. Methods: Sixty-two consecutive patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis who underwent minimally invasive (MIS)-TLIF with bilateral pedicle screw (BPS) or LLIF-LSUP were retrospectively studied. Segmental lordosis angle (SLA), lumbar lordosis angle (LLA), disc height (DH), slipping percentage, the cross-sectional areas (CSA) of the thecal sac, screw placement accuracy, fusion rate and foraminal height (FH) were used to evaluate radiographic changes postoperatively. Visual analogue scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) were used to evaluate the clinical efficacy. Results: Patients who underwent LLIF-LSUP showed shorter operating time, less length of hospital stay and lower blood loss than MIS-TLIF. No statistical difference was found between the 2 groups in screw placement accuracy, overall complications, VAS, and ODI. Compared with MIS-TLIF-BPS, LLIF-LSUP had a significant improvement in sagittal parameters including DH, FH, LLA, and SLA. The CSA of MIS-TLIF-BPS was significantly increased than that of LLIF-LSUP. The fusion rate of LLIF-LSUP was significantly higher than that of MIS-TLIF-BPS at the follow-up of 3 months postoperatively, but there was no statistical difference between the 2 groups at the follow-up of 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months. Conclusion: The overall clinical outcomes and complications of LLIF-LSUP were comparable to that of MIS-TLIF-BPS in this series. Compared with MIS-TLIF-BPS, LLIF-LSUP for lumbar spondylolisthesis represents a significantly shorter operating time, hospital stay and lower blood loss, and demonstrates better radiological outcomes to maintain lumbar lordosis, and reveal an overwhelming superiority in the early fusion rate.

Square Wave Voltammetric Determination of Indole-3-acetic Acid Based on the Enhancement Effect of Anionic Surfactant at the Carbon Paste Electrode

Zhang, Sheng-Hui,Wu, Kang-Bing Korean Chemical Society 2004 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.25 No.9

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an anionic surfactant, can strongly adsorb at the surface of a carbon paste electrode (CPE) via the hydrophobic interaction. In pH 3.0 $Na_2HPO_4$-citric acid buffer (Mcllvaine buffer) and in the presence of SDS, the cationic indole-3-acetic acid (IAA, $pK_a$ = 4.75) was highly accumulated at the CPE surface through the electrostatic interaction between the negative-charged head group of SDS and cationic IAA, compared with that in the absence of SDS. Hence, the oxidation peak current of IAA increases greatly and the oxidation peak potential shifts towards more negative direction. The experimental parameters, such as pH, varieties of surfactants, concentration of SDS, and scan rate were optimized for IAA determination. The oxidation peak current is proportional to the concentration of IAA over the range from $5\;{\times}\;10^{-8}$ mol/L to $2\;{\times}\;10^{-6}$ mol/L. The detection limit is $2\;{\times}\;10^{-8}$ mol/L after 3 min of accumulation. This new voltammetric method was successfully used to detect IAA in some plant leaves.

ACOS5 is Required for Primexine Formation and Exine Pattern Formation During Microsporogenesis in Arabidopsis

        Hui-hui Xie,Lin Chen,Fa-qing Xu,Wan-sheng Guo,Shui Wang,Zhong-Nan Yang,Sen Zhang 한국식물학회 2017 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.60 No.4

Pollen exine, mainly composed of sporopollenin, plays important roles during microspore development. It hasbeen reported that Acyl-CoA Synthetase5 (ACOS5) is requiredfor sporopollenin biosynthesis in Arabidopsis. Here we showthat ACOS5 is essential for primexine formation duringArabidopsis microspore development. Through genetic screen,we identified a point mutation of ACOS5 allele, acos5-2,showing abnormal microspore development. Its microsporeswere degenerated and aborted after released from the tetrads. Transmission electron microscopy showed that primexineformation was reduced in acos5-2 mutant as compared tothat of the wild-type. Consequently, sporopollenin wasaggregated and randomly deposited on the microspores. Insitu hybridization indicated that the key regulators of tapetumdevelopment, DYT1 and TDF1, are required for the expressionof ACOS5 in tapetum. Furthermore, the GUS reporter showedthat the 593-bp promoter sequence was sufficient for theexpression of ACOS5 in the anther. Our data provide evidencethat ACOS5 is required for primexine formation andsporopollenin deposition during microspore development.

      • Clinical Efficacy and Prognosis Factors for Advanced Hepatoblastoma in Children: A 6-year Retrospective Study

        Zhang, Yi,Zhang, Wei-Ling,Huang, Dong-Sheng,Hong, Liang,Wang, Yi-Zhuo,Zhu, Xia,Hu, Hui-Min,Zhang, Pin-Wei,Yi, You,Han, Tao Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.8

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of multimodality treatment of advanced paediatric hepatoblastoma (HB) and the factors affecting prognosis. Methods: A total of 35 children underwent multimodality treatments consisting of chemotherapy, surgery, interventional therapy, and autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. The patients were followed up every month. Results: Serum AFP levels in 33 out of 35 patients in this study were significantly increased (P = 0.0002). According to the statistical scatter plot, the values of serum AFP on the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentages were 1,210, 1,210 and 28,318 ng/dl, respectively. Of the 35 cases, 21 were stage IV. 18 cases were treated with systemic chemotherapy before surgery, and 3 cases with locally interventional chemotherapy before surgery. Statistical analysis showed that the preferred interventional treatment affected prognosis, and that there was a statistically significant difference (P = 0.024). Some 33 patients completed the follow-up, of which 17 were in complete remission (CR), 5 were in partial remission (PR), 1 became disease progressive (DP), and 10 died. The remission and overall survival rates were 66.7% (22/33) and 69.7% (23/33), respectively. Patients with the mixed HB phenotypes had worse prognoses than the epithelial phenotype (P < 0.001), and patients in stage IV had a lower survival rate than those in stage III (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Multimodality treatment can effectively improve remission rate and prolong the survival of children with advanced HB. In addition, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a tumor marker of liver malignant tumors, HB pathological classification, and staging are highly useful in predicting prognosis.

Protective effects of phillyrin against influenza A virus in vivo

        Xin-yan Qu,Qing-jun Li,Hui-min Zhang,Xiao-juan Zhang,Peng-hui Shi,Xiu-juan Zhang,Jing Yang,Zhe Zhou,Sheng-qi Wang 대한약학회 2016 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.39 No.7

Influenza A virus infection represents a great threat to public health. However, owing to side effects and the emergence of resistant virus strains, the use of currently available anti-influenza drugs may be limited. In order to identify novel anti-influenza drugs, we investigated the antiviral effects of phillyrin against influenza A virus infection in vivo. The mean survival time, lung index, viral titers, influenza hemagglutinin (HA) protein and serum cytokines levels, and histopathological changes in lung tissue were examined. Administration of phillyrin at a dose of 20 mg/kg/day for 3 days significantly prolonged the mean survival time, reduced the lung index, decreased the virus titers and interleukin-6 levels, reduced the expression of HA, and attenuated lung tissue damage in mice infected with influenza A virus. Taken together, these data showed that phillyrin had potential protective effects against infection caused by influenza A virus.

      • Identification of a Cancer Stem-like Population in the Lewis Lung Cancer Cell Line

        Zhang, An-Mei,Fan, Ye,Yao, Quan,Ma, Hu,Lin, Sheng,Zhu, Cong-Hui,Wang, Xin-Xin,Liu, Jia,Zhu, Bo,Sun, Jian-Guo,Chen, Zheng-Tang Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.3

Objective: Although various human cancer stem cells (CSCs) have been defined, their applications are restricted to immunocompromised models. Developing a novel CSC model which could be used in immunocompetent or transgenic mice is essential for further understanding of the biomolecular characteristics of tumor stem cells. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed murine lung cancer cells for the presence of CSCs. Methods: Side population (SP) cells were isolated by fluorescence activated cell sorting, followed by serum-free medium (SFM) culture, using Lewis lung carcinoma cell (LLC) line. The self-renewal, differentiated progeny, chemosensitivity, and tumorigenic properties in SP and non-SP cells were investigated through in vitro culture and in vivo serial transplantation. Differential expression profiles of stem cell markers were examined by RT-PCR. Results: The SP cell fraction comprised 1.1% of the total LLC population. SP cells were available to grow in SFM, and had significantly enhanced capacity for cell proliferation and colony formation. They were also more resistant to cisplatin in comparison to non-SP cells, and displayed increased tumorigenic ability. Moreover, SP cells showed higher mRNA expression of Oct-4, ABCG2, and CD44. Conclusion: We identified SP cells from a murine lung carcinoma, which possess well-known characteristics of CSCs. Our study established a useful model that should allow investigation of the biological features and pharmacosensitivity of lung CSCs, both in vitro and in syngeneic immunocompetent or transgenic/knockout mice.

      • Fibulin-5 is a Prognostic Marker that Contributes to Proliferation and Invasion of Human Glioma Cells

        Sheng, Xu-Dong,Chen, Hu,Wang, Hui,Ding, Zhi-Bin,Xu, Gang-Zhu,Zhang, Jun-Feng,Lu, Wen-Chao,Wu, Tao,Zhao, Ling Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.2

Fibulin-5 has recently been considered as a potential tumor suppressor in human cancers. Several studies have shown that it is down-regulated in a variety of tumor types and inhibits tumor growth and metastasis. This study was aimed to investigate the clinical significance of fibulin-5 in glioma and its role in cell proliferation and invasion. We found that the expression of fibulin-5 in glioma tissues was significantly lower than those in normal brain (NB) tissues. Negative expression was significantly correlated with advanced clinical stage (grade III+IV). Furthermore, Fibulin-5 negative expression was correlated with a shorter overall survival of glioma patients. Multivariate Cox repression analysis indicated that fibulin-5 was an independent factor for predicting overall survival of glioma patients. Overexpression obviously inhibited cell proliferation in U251 and U87 cells. Furthermore, it significantly reduced the number of migrating and invading glioma cells. In conclusion, impaired expression of fibulin-5 is correlated with the advanced tumor stage in glioma. Otherwise, Fibulin-5 is an independent prognostic marker for predicting overall survival of glioma patients. Mechanistically, it may function as a tumor suppressor via inhibiting cell proliferation and invasion in gliomas.

Aberrant microRNAs Expression in CD133+/CD326+ Human Lung Adenocarcinoma Initiating Cells from A549

        Sheng Lin,Zheng-tang Chen,Jian-guo Sun,Jing-bo Wu,Hai-xia Long,Cong-hui Zhu,Tong Xiang,Hu Ma,Zhong-quan Zhao,Quan Yao,An-mei Zhang,Bo Zhu 한국분자세포생물학회 2012 Molecules and cells Vol.33 No.3

Increasing evidence demonstrates that miRNAs are in-volved in the dysregulation of tumor initiating cells (TICs) in various tumors. Due to a lack of definitive markers, cell sorting is not an ideal separation method for lung adeno-carcinoma initiating cells. In this study, we combined pa-clitaxel with serum-free medium cultivation (inverse-induc-tion) to enrich TICs from A549 cells, marked by CD133/ CD326, defined features of stemness. We next investigated aberrant microRNAs in this subpopulation compared to normal cells with miRNA microarray and found that 50 miRNAs exhibited a greater than 2-fold change in expres-sion. As further validation, 10 miRNAs were chosen to perform quantitative RT-PCR on the A549 cell line and primary samples. The results suggest that aberrant ex-pression of miRNAs such as miR-29ab, miR-183, miR-17-5p and miR-127-3P may play an important role in regulat-ing the bio-behavior of TICs.

      • Imatinib Mesylate Versus Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Patients with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia

        Zhang, Gui-Fang,Zhou, Min,Bao, Xie-Bing,Qiu, Hui-Ying,Li, Zheng,Xue, Sheng-Li Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.9

Purpose: To compare the relative merits of imatinib and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Materials and Methods: This cohort study was designed to compare the outcomes of imatinib (n=292) versus allo-HSCT (n=141) for CML, the clinical data of these patients being retrospectively analyzed so as to compare the event free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) between these two groups with patients in the chronic phase (CP) and advanced phases, including accelerate (AP) and blast phases (BP). Results: (1) Patients treated with imatinib (278 in the CP) demonstrated superior EFS, OS, 5-year EFS and 5-year OS rates of 88.5% versus 70.0% (P<0.05), 93.2% versus 80.0% (P<0.05), 84% versus 75.0% (P<0.05) and 92% versus 79.0% (P<0.05), respectively, to those treated with allo-HSCT (120 patients in the CP). (2) Both treatments resulted in similar survival, with EFS and OS rates of 42.9% versus 47.6% (P>0.05), 42.9% versus 57.1% (P> 0.05), respectively, for imatinib (14 patients in the AP and BP) and allo-HSCT (21 patients in the AP and BP). Conclusions: Imatinib confers significant survival advantage (EFS and OS) for CML patients with CP compared with allo-HSCT treatment. However, the outcomes are equally good with both treatments in AP and BP patients.
