        Electromagnetic Launcher Sub - scaling Relationships and Small System Design for Research and Educational Purposes

        Although the electromagnetic launcher technology has been progressed significantly during the past two decades the number of firing test facilities are not many. This is prbably due to the large budget and man power required to build and maintain full scale electromagnetic launcher facilities. As the EM launcher technology's potential capabilities have been somewhat demonstrated with the full scale large systems the research is now headed more toward overcoming specific difficulties and answering questions experimentally with smaller, cost effective systems. The first half of this paper presents EM launcher's improved sub-scaling relationships based upon magnetic, thermal and momentum differential equations and EM launcher's basic equations. With the proposed scaling method the field variables can be matched or scaled linearly between the two geometrically scaled systems. The second half of the paper presents pulsed power system's circuit analysis and design technique, which is applied to the capacitor-powered small pulsed power system with crow-barring circuitry. The effect of the so-called speed volt is included. A sub-scaled small system's design is provided as an example.

        This publication deals with the theory and the design method for small railgun systems. Basic design theory was derived from the system's electrical, thermal, and mechanical energy balance conditions. The preliminary results of the Andong University's small railgun system development program was introduced and used as an example. A numerical procedure for calculating railgun's high frequency inductance gradient, L', was provided. A general method for the railgun system`s electrical circuit analysis was formulated and a quick and simple case was demonstrated. The characteristics and design requirements of the railgun system's parts, such as the pulse power supply system, high voltage, high current closing switches, pulse forming networks, high speed rails, and armatures, were discussed.

        circular cylindrical tubes are widely used in structures such as vehicles and aircraft structures, where light weight and high compressive/bending/torsional load carrying capacity are required. When axially compressed, relatively thick circular cylindrical tubes deform in a so-called ring mode. Each ring develops and completely collapses one by one until the entire length of the tube collapses. During the collapse process the tube absorbs a large amount of energy. Like honey-comb structures, circular cylindrical tubes are light weighted, are capable of high axial compressive load, and absorb a large amount of energy before being completely collapsed. In this report, the subject of axial plastic buckling of circular cylindrical tubes was reviewed first. Then, the axial collapse process of the tubes in a so-called ring mode was studied both experimentally and numerically. In the experiment, steel tubes were axially compressed slowly until they were completely collapsed. Fixed boundary condition was provided. Numerical study involves axisymmetric, elastic-plastic, large deflection, self-contact mechanisms. The measured and calculated results were presented and compared with each other. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the load carrying capacity and the energy absorbing capacity of the tube.

      • 유리섬유를 이용한 디젤매연필터의 특성

        경유차량으로부터 배출되는 입자상 대기오염물질 제거를 위한 필터시스템을 제작하여 특성을 조사하였다. 유리섬유로 직조한 매트를 이용하여 트럭의 배기량에 따라 계산하여 각각 제작하였다. 주행시험을 시행한 결과 필터 장착 전후의 매연 발생 차이를 육안으로 확연히 식별할 수 있었으며 엔진소음, 진동, 소음 등의 변화는 운전자가 느끼지 아니하였다. 매연입자는 유리섬유에 충돌하여 운동에너지를 잃고 유리섬유 표면이나 공간에 모여 여과되었다. 유리섬유에 부착한 오염물질은 물을 이용한 초음파 세척에 의해 쉽게 제거되었으며 유리섬유의 표면은 전혀 손상이 없었다. A diesel particulate filter system using glass fabric filter was designed and tested. The filter systems for the It, 2.5t, 5t diesel trucks were assembled with E-glass fiber mat. We confirmed the quantity difference of smoke between before and after installation by examination with the naked eye. And the test driver did not feel the changes of noise, vibration, and power of engine. The particulate matters are caught in space between glass fibers as they lose kinetic energy in collision with glass fibers and lump together. Particulate matters were removed readily by ultrasonic cleaning with water and did not injure the surface of glass fiber.

        Low Neutralizing Activities to the Omicron Subvariants BN.1 and XBB.1.5 of Sera From the Individuals Vaccinated With a BA.4/5-Containing Bivalent mRNA Vaccine

        The continuous emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants has provided insights for updating current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines. We examined the neutralizing activity of Abs induced by a BA.4/5-containing bivalent mRNA vaccine against Omicron subvariants BN.1 and XBB.1.5. We recruited 40 individuals who had received a monovalent COVID-19 booster dose after a primary series of COVID-19 vaccinations and will be vaccinated with a BA.4/5-containing bivalent vaccine. Sera were collected before vaccination, one month after, and three months after a bivalent booster. Neutralizing Ab (nAb) titers were measured against ancestral SARS-CoV-2 and Omicron subvariants BA.5, BN.1, and XBB.1.5. BA.4/5-containing bivalent vaccination significantly boosted nAb levels against both ancestral SARS-CoV-2 and Omicron subvariants. Participants with a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection had higher nAb titers against all examined strains than the infection-naïve group. NAb titers against BN.1 and XBB.1.5 were lower than those against the ancestral SARS-CoV-2 and BA.5 strains. These results suggest that COVID-19 vaccinations specifically targeting emerging Omicron subvariants, such as XBB.1.5, may be required to ensure better protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection, especially in high-risk groups.
