Image Segmentation Using Linked Mean-Shift Vectors and Global/Local Attributes

Hanjoo Cho,Suk-Ju Kang,Young Hwan Kim IEEE 2017 IEEE transactions on circuits and systems for vide Vol.27 No.10

<P>This paper proposes novel noniterative mean-shift-based image segmentation that uses global and local attributes. The existing mean-shift-based methods use a fixed range bandwidth, and hence their accuracy is dependent on the range spectrum of an image. To resolve this dependency, this paper proposes to modify the range kernel in the mean-shift process to be anisotropic. The modification is conducted using a global attribute defined as the range covariance matrix of the image. Further, to alleviate oversegmentation, the proposed method merges the segments having similar local attributes more aggressively than other segments. The local attribute for each segment is defined as the sum of the variances of the chromatic components. Finally, to expedite the processing, the proposed method uses a region adjacency graph (RAG) for the merging process, thus differing from the existing linked mean-shift-based methods. In the experiments on the Berkeley segmentation data set, the use of the global and local attributes improved segmentation accuracy; the proposed method outperformed the state-of-the-art linked mean-shift-based method by showing an improvement of 2.15%, 3.16%, 3.32%, and 1.90% in probability rand index, segmentation covering, variation of information, and F-measure, respectively. Further, compared with the benchmark method, which uses the dilating and merging scheme, the proposed method improved the speed of the merging process 42 times by applying the RAG.</P>

Image segmentation using linked mean-shift vectors and its implementation on GPU

Hanjoo Cho,Suk-Ju Kang,Sung In Cho,Young Hwan Kim IEEE 2014 IEEE transactions on consumer electronics Vol.60 No.4

<P>This paper proposes a new approach to meanshift- based image segmentation that uses a non-iterative process to determine the maxima of the underlying density, which are called modes. To identify the mode, the proposed approach performs a mean-shift process on each pixel only once, and uses the resulting mean-shift vectors to construct links for the pairs of pixels, instead of iteratively performing the mean-shift process. Then, it groups the pixels of the same mode, connected through the links, into the same cluster. Although the proposed approach performs the mean-shift process only once, it provides comparable segmentation quality to the conventional approaches. In experiments using benchmark images, the processing time was reduced to a quarter, while probabilistic rand index and segmentation covering were well maintained; they were degraded by only 0.38% and 1.87%, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm improves the locality of the required data and compute-intensity of the algorithm, which are important factors for utilizing the GPU effectively. The proposed algorithm, when implemented on a GPU, improved the processing speed by over 75 times compared to implementation on a CPU, while the conventional approach was accelerated by about 15 times.</P>

초고속정보통신망하에서 인터넷서비스만족도에 영향을 주는 요인에 관한 연구

        조성빈,유한주,유왕진 한국품질경영학회 2002 품질경영학회지 Vol.30 No.3

A few recent international surveys reported that Korea ranks the top with respect to the high-speed information and communication network subscription per 100 people in the world. Such infrastructure has been bringing about broad changes in Internet service for both business and individual users. By conducting a questionnaire survey on a moderate size of sample proportional to the population of each region across country, we try to analyze what factors might explain the level of Internet service satisfaction with respect to security, searching, and convenience dimensions. According to the test results, several factors such as sex, age, kind of network lines, usage frequency, e-mail usage, e-shopping, online problem experience might explain the different levels of Internet service satisfaction in the high-speed Internet network. This study might shed a guidance to scholars conducting Internet-related studies and practitioners who plan information policies and business strategies.

User Dissatisfaction on the High-Speed Internet Service Quality

        Cho, Sungbin,Yoo, Hanjoo 한국경영과학회 2002 經營 科學 Vol.19 No.2

The growth of Internet usage even accelerated by the spread of high-speed Internet access network such as ADSL is affecting our socioeconomic activities and culture in a great way. Korea is recently reported to be the number one high-speed Internet network subscription per 100 people in the world. In a way to reflect this situation, we collect a moderate size of sample proportional to the population of each region across country and investigate what factors might explain the level of user's dissatisfaction with respect to Internet service they have been receiving. The results indicate that the set of gender, age, Internet usage, service kids, incoming e-mails, and e-shopping is significantly influencing user's dissatisfaction, In that dissatisfaction is measured in 11 perspectives. In particular, user's age, gender, and e-shopping experiences are considered to be mostly explainable.
