Human cord blood is the third most promising source of hermatopoietic stem cells following bone marrow and peripheral blood for rescue after high dose chemotherapy against malignancies. The possibility of cord blood transplantation in adult was limited by the amount of cord blood that could be collected. Cord blood transplantation after ex vivo expansion with cytokines have already tried in adults. Authors tried to examine the influence of culture media(RPMI and α-MEM), serum(FCS, autologous cord plasma) and hematopoietic growth factors(GM-CSF, IL-3 and SCF) in ex vivo expansion of cord blood stem cells. When cord blood mononuclear cells were cultivated for 5 weeks in various combination of culture condition without growth factors, the best media for proliferation was α-MEM with 10% autologous plasma. Treatment of various combination of hematopoietic growth factors significantly increased cell number and triple combination of GM-CSF, IL-3 and SCF showed most significant proliferation of cells(p=0.001). As time went, cells proliferated continuously until 4 weeks after initation of incubation and decreased thereafter with change of shape. When cord blood mononuclear cells were incubated with all of three hematopoietic growth factors, α-MEM plus autologous cord plasma was best for ex vivo expansion and RPMI plus autologous cord plasma was the next. When concentration of SCF and GM-CSF was measured by ELISA, SCF was significantly higher in cord plasma (2717±98.9 pg/ml) compared to those in maternal serum(898±105.2 pg/ml) and in normal control(580 pg/ml)(P<0.05). GM-CSF was not detectable by ELISA in all three groups. These results showed that the best condition for the ex vivo expansion of cord blood stem cells was α-MEM plus 10% autologous cord plasma with combination of GM-CSF, IL-3 and SCF for the 4 weeks. Probable presence of growth factors such as SCF in cord plasma might help expansion of stem cells ex vivo.

Proto-oncogenes are highly conservative genes in human cell, which code growth factors, growth factor receptors, enzyme and nuclear protein and are necessary for cell growth and function. Alteration in these genes such as amplification, rearrangement, or mutation appeared to be associated with malignant transformation of cells. We examined 14 DNA samples from human squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck with slot blot analysis. Two out fourteen samples showed c-myc gene amplification. Nodal involvements (N2a and N3b) were observed in both patients. They were moderately differentiated SCC of larynx. Further studies about c-myc gene rearrangenment and mutation should be confirmed in these samples and examine whether c-myc amplification is correlated with the biologic characteristics of SCC of head and neck.

<P>We investigated a cost-effective method using 10-Gb/s LiNbO3 Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) for transmitting 40-Gb/s duobinary nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) and duobinary carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (DCS-RZ) signals. The transmission performance of the signals was investigated. The optimum bandwidths of low-pass filters in transmitters using 10- and 40-Gb/s LiNbO3 MZMs were also investigated. The calculated transmission performance of the transmitter using 10-Gb/s LiNbO3 MZMs was compared to that using 40-Gb/s LiNbO3 MZMs. The effect of the bias offset in the transmitters was investigated. Compared to duobinary-NRZ and DCS-RZ signals generated by a transmitter using 40-Gb/s LiNbO3 MZMs, those generated by using 10-Gb/s LiNbO3 MZMs can be transmitted with 1-dB power penalty over 480-km transmission</P>

Untreated patients with head and neck cancer without distant metastasis underwent the induction chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy. Patient's age was ranged 34-70 (median 54); 7 were Stage Ⅲ, 19 Stage Ⅳ. Chemotherapy consisted of 3 cycles of cisplatin 100 mg/m^2 on day 1, and f-fluorouracil 1,000 mg/m^2/day for 5 days, every 3 or 4 weeks. Of 26 chemotherapy patients, 22 were evaluable ; complete response was 32% (7/22) and partial response 50% (11/22). Seventeen Patients completed radiotherapy following chemotherapy; complete response was 58.8% (10/17) and partial response 23.5% (4/17), The toxicities were tolerable. The induction chemotherapy using cisplatin and f-fluorouracil followed by radiotherapy was safe and effective.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>In order to investigate seasonal and diurnal variation of primary organic carbon (POC) and secondary organic carbon (SOC) concentrations in a megacity, hourly measurements of particulate and gaseous pollutants were carried out in Seoul from January to December 2010. The EC Tracer Method (ECTM) and the Multiple Regression Method (MRM) have been used to estimate seasonal and diurnal concentrations of POC and SOC concentrations. Annual mean SOC concentrations estimated by ECTM (SOCECTM) and MRM (SOCMRM) accounted for 14.61 and 17.21% of TOC concentrations, respectively. Seasonal patterns in SOCMRM were comparable to those of SOCECTM, but the annual average SOCMRM was about 15% greater than that of SOCECTM. In spring, however, a large discrepancy was observed between SOCECTM and SOCMRM, which is thought to be due to a high ozone concentration and primary TOC/EC ratio. Regarding the annual mean diurnal characteristics, POC concentration showed peaks around 10:00 and 00:00 local time that were also observed in diurnal variations of TOC and EC concentrations. Annual mean SOC concentration, however, showed peaks at around 15:00. In the morning over all seasons, we found discrepancies between SOCECTM and SOCMRM due to overestimated SOCECTM concentration. The diurnal variations in SOC concentrations were found to have seasonal characteristics. The diurnal pattern of SOC concentration in spring was similar to that in autumn, and SOC concentrations in all seasons with the exception of winter showed a peak at around 15:00. In summer, however, the SOC concentration peak at around 15:00 was greater by 70%, 81%, and 54% than the peaks seen in spring, autumn, and winter, respectively, which could be explained by the high ozone concentration and strong UV radiation in summer. From 10:00 to 15:00 in summer, the average increase rates in SOCECTM and SOCMRM were 0.39 and 0.24 μg m−3 h−1, respectively. In winter, negligible diurnal variations of estimated SOC concentrations demonstrate that SOC formation is less active than in other seasons. The high concentration level of mean SOC in winter could be attributed to a low mixing height or stagnant atmospheric condition.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P><P>► First estimation of diurnal SOC variations was carried out in a megacity site. ► Enhanced SOC concentration was estimated in summer. ► The diurnal variations in SOC concentrations show seasonal characteristics. ► SOC concentrations were peaked at 3:00 PM for all seasons with different magnitudes. ► The results from EC tracer and multiple regression methods show slight discrepancy.</P>

<P>We propose and demonstrate a cost-effective way to implement a 10-Gb/s chirped duobinary (CDB) transmitter using an electroabsorption modulated laser (EML) followed by a LiNbO/sub 3/ Mach-Zehnder modulator both driven with binary signals. Successful transmission is achieved over 285 km of dispersion-uncompensated standard single-mode fiber without significantly increasing the complexity and cost of the transmitter, compared to conventional duobinary transmitters. The demonstrated CDB signals exhibit a superior performance to conventional duobinary signals, in terms of back-to-back receiver sensitivity and transmission distance. We achieve consistent transmission performance with three EMLs obtained from two different vendors, each having different chirp and transmission characteristics. Therefore, we believe the use of EMLs greatly reduces the implementation issues of 10-Gb/s CDB transmission systems.</P>

A CVT with a line pressure electronic control system was developed using PWM solenoid valves based on the mechanical controlled CVT in order to improve the overall efficiency of the CVT hydraulic system. For the line pressure electronic controlled CVT, the optimal line pressure control strategy was suggested considering the driver's desire and driving conditions. Experimental results showed that the line pressure of the electronic controlled line pressure CVT developed in this study can be reduced by 5-18 bar compared with those of the mechanical CVT for the launching test, and by 5-10 bar in the cruising test. Also, it is observed that the hydraulic power loss was decreased by<br/> the electronic control, which results in the increased efficiency by 2.5% at 60 KPH cruising speed. It is expected that the reduced amount of the line pressure by electronic control strategy contributes to the improvement in the CVT system efficiency.
