        Methylation Status of Transcriptional Modulatory Genes Associated with Colorectal Cancer in Northeast China

        Background/Aims: Methylation status plays a causal role in carcinogenesis in targeted tissues. However, the relationship between the DNA methylation status of multiple genes in blood leukocytes and colorectal cancer (CRC) susceptibility as well as interactions between dietary factors and CRC risks are unclear. Methods: We performed a case-control study with 466 CRC patients and 507 cancer-free controls to investigate the association among the methylation status of individual genes, multiple CpG site methylation (MCSM), multiple CpG site heterogeneous methylation and CRC susceptibility. Peripheral blood DNA methylation levels were detected by performing methylation-sensitive high-resolution melting. Results: Total heterogeneous methylation of CA10 and WT1 conferred a significantly higher risk of CRC (adjusted odds ratio [ORadjusted], 5.445; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.075 to 9.643; ORadjusted, 1.831; 95% CI, 1.100 to 3.047; respectively). Subjects with high-level MCSM (MCSM-H) status demonstrated a higher risk of CRC (ORadjusted, 4.318; 95% CI, 1.529 to 12.197). Additionally, interactions between the high-level intake of fruit and CRH, WT1, and MCSM on CRC were statistically significant. Conclusions: The gene methylation status of blood leukocytes may be associated with CRC risk. MCSM-H of blood leukocytes was associated with CRC, especially in younger people. Some dietary factors may affect hypermethylation status and influence susceptibility to CRC.

        Disc-type Underwater Glider Modeling and Analysis for Omnidirectional and Steering Motion Characteristics

        A disc-type underwater glider (DTUG) has a highly symmetrical full-wing shape that allows it to moveomnidirectionally and have the same hydrodynamic characteristics in all directions in the horizontal plane. Thesecharacteristics make the viscous hydrodynamic coefficients measured by conventional methods unsuitable for simulating the omnidirectional and steering motions of the DTUG. To further reveal the omnidirectional and steeringmotion characteristics of the DTUG, this paper proposes a new theoretical method for calculating the DTUG motion control equations in the velocity frame rather than the body frame. Based on the structural characteristics ofthe DTUG, the motion control equations are derived and then solved using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The omnidirectional and steering motions of the DTUG are simulated in the velocity frame and compared withthe results calculated in the body frame. The results show that the viscous hydrodynamic coefficients obtained byconventional methods are not suitable for analyzing the omnidirectional motion of the DTUG, and the method ofcalculating the motion control equations in the body frame has limitations in studying the steering motion. The newmethod proposed in this paper solves these limitations well and can more accurately reveal the motion characteristics of the DTUG without recalculating the hydrodynamic coefficients. The results also show that the DTUG canchange the heading angle more easily than a torpedo-type underwater glider (TTUG), and the steering radius ismuch smaller, which means that the DTUG has greater flexibility in a small body of water. The DTUG can remainstable when the control variables are within the control range and the new method is adopted.

        Deeper SSD: Simultaneous Up-sampling and Down-sampling for Drone Detection

        Drone detection can be considered as a specific sort of small object detection, which has always been a challenge because of its small size and few features. For improving the detection rate of drones, we design a Deeper SSD network, which uses large-scale input image and deeper convolutional network to obtain more features that benefit small object classification. At the same time, in order to improve object classification performance, we implemented the up-sampling modules to increase the number of features for the low-level feature map. In addition, in order to improve object location performance, we adopted the down-sampling modules so that the context information can be used by the high-level feature map directly. Our proposed Deeper SSD and its variants are successfully applied to the self-designed drone datasets. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the Deeper SSD and its variants, which are useful to small drone’s detection and recognition. These proposed methods can also detect small and large objects simultaneously.

        An Ultra-narrow Bandwidth Filter for Daytime Wind Measurement of Direct Detection Rayleigh Lidar

        A Rayleigh Lidar used for wind detection works by transmitting laser pulses to the atmosphere and receiving backscattering signals from molecules. Because of the weak backscattering signals, a lidar usually uses a high sensitivity photomultiplier as detector and photon counting technology for signal collection. The capturing of returned extremely weak backscattering signals requires the lidar to work on dark background with a long time accumulation to get high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Because of the strong solar background during the day, the SNR of lidar during daytime is much lower than that during nighttime, the altitude and accuracy of detection are also restricted greatly. Therefore this article describes an ultra-narrow bandwidth filter (UNBF) that has been developed on 354.7 nm wavelength of laser. The UNBF is used for suppressing the strong solar background that degrades the performance of Rayleigh wind lidar during daytime. The optical structure of UNBF consists of an interference filter (IF), a low resolution Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) and a high resolution FPI. The parameters of each optical component of the UNBF are presented in this article. The transmission curve of the aligned UNBF is measured with a tunable laser. Contrasting the result of with-UNBF and with-IF shows that the solar background received by a Licel transient recorder decreases by 50~100 times and that the SNR with-UNBF was improved by 3 times in the altitude range (35 km to 40 km) compared to with-IF at 10:26 to 10:38 on August 29, 2018. By the SNR comparison at four different times of one day, the ratio-values are larger than 1 over the altitude range (25~50 km) in general, the results illustrate that the SNR with-UNBF is better than that with-IF for Rayleigh Lidar during daytime and they demonstrate the effective improvements of solar background restriction of UNBF.

        Superhydrophobic Ca/Ce Coating on Anodized Magnesium Alloy by Electrodeposition and Its Corrosion Inhibition

        A myristate coating containing Ca and Ce (Ca/Ce coating) was fabricated on the surface of an anodized magnesium alloyby a handy, rapid and facile electrodeposition method. The deposited coatings presented superhydrophobicity and excellentcorrosion properties in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The effects of the concentration ratio of Ca2+and Ce3+in the electrolytesolution on the morphology, hydrophobicity and corrosion properties of the Ca/Ce coatings had been studied. The formationmechanism of the Ca/Ce coatings had been discussed in detail. The results indicated that the introduction of Ce ions in theelectrolyte solution could enhance the coatings’ thickness and hydrophobicity compared with the single Ca coating. In orderto provide durable and stable protection for magnesium alloy, an appropriate ratio of Ca2+and Ce3+is requisite for the Ca/Ce coating with rare cracks and high superhydrophobicity.

        대황고(大黃膏)의 메티실린 내성 황색 포도상구균에 대한 항균활성

        Objectives : Infectious diseases by Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are a growing problem worldwide. Characteristic of MRSA is endlessly mutation to resist antibiotics. Daehwanggo (DHG) is one of the oriental medicine prescriptions contained in Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine. Daehwanggo was mainly used for external preparation from old times. The purpose of this study is to confirm possibility as supplementary drug of DHG about antibiotics through observation of synergy effect between DHG and commercial antibiotics and to observe restriction on growth of MRSA on any pathway through observation of mechanism. Methods : The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of DHG against MRSA is 500 ~ 2000 ㎍/㎖ by broth dilution method. In the checkerboard method, the combinations of DHG with antibiotics has partial synergistic effect or synergy effect and DHG markedly reduced the MICs of the antibiotics oxacillin (OX), gentamicin (GT) against MRSA. In the inhibition of resistance mechanism of DHG against MRSA, the expression of resistance gene and protein about β-lactam antibiotic was reduced. Also, we observed the effect of DHG about cell membrane permeability against MRSA, and confirmed that DHG suppressed growth of strains by increasing cell membrane permeability. Results : Basis on the result, we speculate that DHG increase antibacterial activity of antibiotics against MRSA by changing the structure of cell wall of MRSA. Conclusions : These data suggest that Daehwanggo possesses possibility as supplementary drug about antibiotics against MRSA.

        Vitexin Inhibits Gastric Cancer Growth and Metastasis through HMGB1-mediated Inactivation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR/HIF-1α Signaling Pathway

        Purpose: Gastric cancer (GC) has high morbidity and mortality and is a serious threat to public health. The flavonoid compound vitexin is known to exhibit anti-tumor activity. In this study, we explored the therapeutic potential of vitexin in GC and its underlying mechanism. Materials and Methods: The viability, migration, and invasion of GC cells were determined using MTT, scratch wound healing, and transwell assays, respectively. Target molecule expression was determined by western blotting. Tumor growth and liver metastasis were evaluated in vivo using nude mice. Protein expression in the tumor tissues was examined by immunohistochemistry. Results: Vitexin inhibited GC cell viability, migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in a dose-dependent manner. Vitexin treatment led to the inactivation of phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT/hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) pathway by repressing HMGB1 expression. Vitexin-mediated inhibition in proliferation, migration, invasion and EMT of GC cells were counteracted by hyper-activation of PI3K/AKT/HIF-1α pathway or HMGB1 overexpression. Finally, vitexin inhibited the xenograft tumor growth and liver metastasis in vivo by suppressing HMGB1 expression. Conclusions: Vitexin inhibited the malignant progression of GC in vitro and in vivo by suppressing HMGB1-mediated activation of PI3K/Akt/HIF-1α signaling pathway. Thus, vitexin may serve as a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of GC.

      • Evolution of microstructure and tensile properties of Fe-18Ni-12Cr based AFA steel during aging at 700<sup>o</sup>C

        <P>The effects of aging at 700 degrees C on the microstructure and tensile properties of an alumina-forming austenitic (AFA) stainless steel were investigated. With increasing aging time, B2-NiAl and Laves phase precipitated first on grain boundaries (GB) and then in the grain interior. The GB precipitate coverage reached 74% after aging for 1000 h. The GB precipitates not only suppressed grain coarsening during aging, but also influenced the tensile fracture mode at 700 degrees C by partitioning stress concentration on triple junctions. Moreover plate-like and spherical NbC particles precipitated during aging. Spherical NbC with size of around 5 nm were stable, while plate-like NbC grew to 89 nm after aging for 1000 h. These precipitates played an important role on the tensile strength. Age hardening contributed to the increasing tensile strength at RT with aging time, while the softening mechanism of dynamic recovery dominated the tensile tests at 700 degrees C.
