        Test strip과 Chlorophyll meter를 이용한 토마토의 신속한 영양진단

        본 연구는 지금까지 제시된 여러 가지 간이 식물영양 진단 방법들 중 test strip과 chlorophyll meter의 이용가능성을 검토하고 실제 이용 방안을 모색하고자 수행되었다. 본 실험에서는 양액의 N, P, K 수준을 달리하여 토마토를 재배하면서 생육시기별로 specific color difference sensor value(SCDSV), 엽병 즙액 중 NO_3, PO_4, K의 함량을 측정하였다. 실험 결과 N, P, K 함량의 변화보다 더 민감하였다. Test strip을 이용하여 측정한 토마토 엽병 즙액 중 NO_3, PO_4, K함량 변화가엽 중 total-N, P, K의 농도와 고도의 일차상관관계를 나타내었다. 지금까지 여러 연구를 통해 확립된 토마토의 엽 중 total-N, P, K의 적정 함량을 희귀식에 대입하여 구한 즙액의 적정 NO_3, PO_4, K의 함량은 각각 3.4~5.9, 0.3~0.5, 3.6~6.5 g/l였다. Chlorophyll meter를 이용하여 측정한 SCDSV는 엽 중 total-N 함량을 희귀식에 대입하여 계산한 결과 적정 SCDSV는 36.0~40.0이었다. 본 연구 결과 test strip과 chlorophyll meter는 토마토의 신속한 영양 진단에 이용 할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. This study was performed to develop a more rapid and simple nutrient diagnosis method of plants than the conventional leaf analysis method. Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. super momotaro) was planted in the mixed media produced by nidxing perlite and rock wool at I : I (v/v) ratio. The Yamazakki nutrient solutions for cucumber and tomato were supplied to the media using the rnicro-drip irrigation system. Experimental plots produced consisted of no fertilization, deficient fertilization, adequate fertilization and surplus fertilization for N, P and K, respectively. Each experimental plot was replicated four times. Specific color different sensor values (SCDSV) measured by the chlorophyll meter were closely related to total-N concentrations in the leaves measured by the conventional method. Nitrate, PO, and K concentrations in petiole sap measured by test strips (Reflectoquant, Merck, Germany) showed a significant relationship with total-N, P and K concentrations in leaves. The linear regression equations between NO,, PO, and K concentrations in petiole sap and total-N, P and K concentrations in the leaves were prepared. The optimum levels of NO,, PO, and K in petiole sap were obtained by plugging the optimum concentrations of total-N, P and K in the leaves by other researchers into the equations. In conclusion, the SCDSV by the chlorophyll meter and concentrations of NO,, P and K in petiole sap measured by the test strips would be suitable for rapid estimation of plant nutrient status.

        Relationship between growth rate and wood properties was investigated by water absorption and hygroscopic properties with Alnus glutinosa L. from 4 different origin of seed (Bulgary, Italy, United Kindom, Yugoslavia). In cross sectional water absorption. there was difference among different origin of seed and higher growth rate led to higher water absorption as 0.62~2.82 g/cm2 ranges with average 1.81 g/cm2. In equilibrium moisture content (EMC) at temperature 40oC relative humidity(RH) 75%, there was difference among different origin of seed and higher growth rate led to higher EMC as 12.32 ~13.16% ranges with average 12.65%. EMC at temperature 40 RH 90%, there was difference among different origin of seed and higher growth rate led to higher EMC as 29.01~34.15% ranges with average 30.32%. In cross sectional moisture absorption at 24 h treatment. there was no difference among different origin of seed and different growth rate as 0.031~0.041% ranges with average 0.036 g/cm2

        Seroprevalence of the bovine leukemia virus among Korean native cattle in South Korea

        Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is the causative agent of enzootic bovine leukosis. This study was conducted to clarify the seroprevalence of BLV in the Republic of Korea. Blood samples were obtained from Korean native cattle farms in all provinces of South Korea except Jeju. A commercial indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with 4,498 samples to detect antibodies against BLV was conducted. The results revealed that the prevalence of BLV was dependent upon age, with increasing prevalence among cattle occurring until they were 5 years old. The highest seroprevalence in cattle was observed in Chungnam (29.6%) and the lowest was observed in Jeonnam (2.6%). The mean overall prevalence for BLV antibodies in the survey was 10.2%, indicating that BLV is widespread nationwide.

      • Locator-Checker-Scaler Object Tracking Using Spatially Ordered and Weighted Patch Descriptor

        <P>In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective object descriptor and a novel tracking algorithm to track a target object accurately. For the object description, we divide the bounding box of a target object into multiple patches and describe them with color and gradient histograms. Then, we determine the foreground weight of each patch to alleviate the impacts of background information in the bounding box. To this end, we perform random walk with restart (RWR) simulation. We then concatenate the weighted patch descriptors to yield the spatially ordered and weighted patch (SOWP) descriptor. For the object tracking, we incorporate the proposed SOWP descriptor into a novel tracking algorithm, which has three components: locator, checker, and scaler (LCS). The locator and the scaler estimate the center location and the size of a target, respectively. The checker determines whether it is safe to adjust the target scale in a current frame. These three components cooperate with one another to achieve robust tracking. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed LCS tracker achieves excellent performance on recent benchmarks.</P>

        Cryo-EM as a powerful tool for drug discovery: recent structural based studies of SARS-CoV-2

        The novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has arisen as a global pandemic affecting the respiratory system showing acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, there is no targeted therapeutic agent yet and due to the growing cases of infections and the rising death tolls, discovery of the possible drug is the need of the hour. In general, the study for discovering therapeutic agent for SARS-CoV-2 is largely focused on large-scale screening with fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD). With the recent advancement in cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM), it has become one of the widely used tools in structural biology. It is effective in investigating the structure of numerous proteins in high-resolution and also had an intense influence on drug discovery, determining the binding reaction and regulation of known drugs as well as leading the design and development of new drug candidates. Here, we review the application of cryo-EM in a structure-based drug design (SBDD) and in silico screening of the recently acquired FBDD in SARS-CoV-2. Such insights will help deliver better understanding in the procurement of the effective remedial solution for this pandemic.

        <P>The change of neuronal activation due to the passive perception of various driving speeds in comparison to a reference driving speed was assessed using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Videos recorded in real driving conditions on the road at driving speeds of 50, 70, 90, and 110 km/h were shown as visual stimuli. An experiment consisted of three blocks, each having a control phase (50km/h) and a stimulation phase (70, 90, or 110 km/h). In the passive perception of various driving speed differences, the areas related to visual cognition and spatial attention such as temporal, occipital, parietal, frontal areas, and cerebellum were activated. As the driving speed difference increased, the number of activated voxels also increased in the areas related to visual cognition. However, the visual cognition related areas showed a different pattern from the spatial attention related area with an increase of the driving speed difference. This implies that each brain area has a different level of involvement in the passive perception of the driving speed difference, although both visual cognitions related areas and spatial attention related area are related to it.</P>

        Cryo-electron tomography: a triumphant breakthrough in structural biology

        Cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) has been offering impressive insights into the structures of macromolecules in the field of structural biology as a result of recent advancements in hardware and software technologies. This breakthrough has greatly aided our understanding of the cellular mechanisms of proteins and has triggered the dawn of an unprecedented golden age in structural biology. However, the technique still has inherent limitations owing to the dynamic tendency and tangled interactions of biomolecules. Attempts to overcome these limitations have led to the emergence of cryo-electron tomography (Cryo-ET) as a powerful technique in the field of structural biology, allowing for the three-dimensional visualization of the native conformation of biological specimens. This promising electron microscopy method has revolutionized our grasp of complex structures and their dynamic interactions, thereby providing unprecedented insights into the organization and function of macromolecular complexes within their native cellular environments. In this paper, we review state-of-the-art cryo-ET workflows, provide examples of biological applications, and discuss the fundamental necessity of boosting the potential applications of cryo-ET.
