        Hamzah A Wali,Rafidah Mazlan 대한청각학회 2018 Journal of Audiology & Otology Vol.22 No.1

Background and Objectives: Although ethnicity effect on wideband absorbance (WBA) findingswas evident for adults, its effect on neonates has not been established yet. This studyaimed to investigate the influence of ethnicity on WBA measured at 0 daPa from neonateswith healthy middle ear functions. Subjects and Methods: Participants were 99 normal, healthy, full-term newborn babies with chronological age between 11 and 128 hours of age(mean=46.73, standard deviation=26.36). A cross-sectional study design was used to measureWBA at 16 one-third octave frequency points from 99 neonates comprising of threeethnic groups: Malays (n=58), Chinese (n=13) and Indians (n=28). A total of 165 ears (83.3%)that passed a battery of tests involving distortion product otoacoustic emissions, 1 kHztympanometry and acoustic stapedial reflex were further tested using WBA. Moreover, bodysize measurements were recorded from each participant. Results: The Malays and Indiansneonates showed almost identical WBA response across the frequency range while the Chinesebabies showed lower absorbance values between 1.25 kHz and 5 kHz. However, thedifferences observed in WBA between the three ethnic groups were not statistically significant(p=0.23). Additionally, there were no statistically significant difference in birth weight, height and head circumference among the three ethnic groups. Conclusions: This studyshowed that Malays, Chinese and Indians neonates were not significantly different in their WBAresponses. In conclusion, to apply for the ethnic-specific norms is not warranted when testingneonates from population constitute of these three ethnicities.

The Impact of Cross-correlation on Mobile Robot Localization

Hamzah Ahmad,Nur Aqilah Othman 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2015 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.13 No.5

This paper deals with the theoretical investigation of the importance of cross-correlation in mobile robot localization. Two different case studies were conducted to examine the effects of crosscorrelation terms on the estimation. The first case refers to a situation when a mobile robot moves and calculates its position relative to a landmark, while in the second case the mobile robot is independent of the landmark position. The preliminary results obtained have indicated that the updated state covariance of the mobile robot that is independent of the landmark position could decrease or increase compared to that of the mobile robot that depends on the landmark position. The results are then evaluated through simulation which is consistently agrees with the theoretical results.

      • H∞ filtering Convergence and It’s Application to SLAM

Hamzah Ahmad,Toru Namerikawa 제어로봇시스템학회 2009 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2009 No.8

KF-SLAM(Kalman filter-SLAM) have been used as a popular solution by researchers in many SLAM ap-plication. Nevertheless, it short comings of a ssumption for Gaussian noise limited its efficiency and demand researcher to consider better filter and algorithm to achieve a promising result of estimation. In this paper, we proposed one of its family, the H∞ filter-based SLAM to determine its competency for SLAM problem. Unlike Kalm an filter, H∞ filterable to work in an unknown statistical noise behavior and thus more robust. It rely on a guess that the noise is in bounded energy and does not require a priori knowledge about the system. Therefore, we proposed the H∞ filter aso ther available technique to in fer the location for both robot and landmarks while simult aneously building the map. From the results of simulation, H∞ filter produces better outcome than the Kalman filter especially in the linear case estimation. As a result, H∞ filter may provide sanother available estimation methods with the capability to ensure and improve estimation for the robotic mapping problem especally in SLAM.

Classification of Degraded Peat Swamp Forest for Restoration Planning at Landscape Level Using Remote Sensing Technique

Hamzah, Khali Aziz,Idris, Azahan Shah,Parlan, Ismail Institute of Forest Science 2013 Journal of Forest Science Vol.29 No.1

Malaysia possesses about 1.56 million ha of Peat Swamp Forest (PSF). The PSF safeguard enormous biological diversity, while providing crucial benefits for the sustainable development of human communities. Numbers of threatened plant species are associated with the PSF, including the commercially important Gonystylus bancanus timber. To prevent significant losses of biodiversity, it is important to manage the PSF for both biological conservation and sustainable use. Equally important is to restore all degraded PSF in an attempt to ensure the PSF ecosystem is suitable for the vegetation to grow and rehabilitate back to the normal condition. Prior to plan any forest restoration program, there is a need to properly map the degraded PSF in order to estimate the forest conditions and determine the vegetations status. Most of the time this need to be done at a landscape level and requires a technology that can provide accurate, timely and reliable information for the planner to make decision. This paper describes a study using geospatial technology in combination with ground survey to classify the degraded PSF in South East Pahang Peat Swamp Forest (SEPPSF), Malaysia, into different degree of vegetation classes. With map accuracy of about 83%, the technique proved to be useful in delineating the different degree of PSF degradation from which the information can be used to properly plan forest restoration program in the area. The final output which is in the form of map can be used in developing a Restoration Master Plan for the degraded PSF areas.

Characterization and expression of SabA and BabA genes in Helicobacter pylori under varying pH

Hamzah Abdulrahman Salman,Eman Mobder Nayif,Anmar Hameed Bloh 한국미생물학회 2021 미생물학회지 Vol. No.

Helicobacter pylori is a potential cause for peptic ulcers whichcan make persistent chronic infection. Helicobacter pylori produceurease at low pH to neutralize the acidic environment to colonizethe gastric mucosa. This investigation aimed to characterize H. pylori based on urease, adherence, motility, and biofilm activityand to determine the gene expression of SabA and BabA byreal-time qRT-PCR. The reference culture H. pylori ATCC49503 was employed in the current study. The characterization ofH. pylori, such as biofilm, urease, adherence, and motility assays, was determined in acidic environments with the supplement ofurea substrate. Real-time qRT-PCR was executed to find thepossible explanation for the colonization by the genes actin,SabA, and BabA. The study indicated that urea substrate isimportant in biofilm activity, adherence, motility, and urease ofH. pylori. Helicobacter pylori ATCC 49503 showed enhancedactivity at pH 2.5 only when supplemented with urea substrate. Real-time qRT-PCR confirmed the positive and significantexpression of the SabA and BabA genes in an acidic environmentand its cooperative role in biofilm and the motility of H. pylori. The results propose that urease within H. pylori is necessary toneutralize the acidic niche and colonize effectively within themucosal layers of the stomach. Additionally, the colonizationand adaptability of H. pylori in the in vitro were dependant onurease and pH. Further studies are proposed to understand thecolonization of clinical strains of H. pylori.
