        <P>The focus of this paper lies on the possible experimental tests of leptogenesis scenarios. We consider both leptogenesis generated from oscillations, as well as leptogenesis from out-of-equilibrium decays. As the Akhmedov-Rubakov-Smirnov (ARS) mechanism allows for heavy neutrinos in the GeV range, this opens up a plethora of possible experimental tests, e.g. at neutrino oscillation experiments, neutrinoless double beta decay, and direct searches for neutral heavy leptons at future facilities. In contrast, testing leptogenesis from out-of-equilibrium decays is a quite difficult task. We comment on the necessary conditions for having successful leptogenesis at the TeV-scale. We further discuss possible realizations and their model specific testability in extended seesaw models, models with extended gauge sectors, and supersymmetric leptogenesis. Not being able to test high-scale leptogenesis directly, we present a way to falsify such scenarios by focusing on their washout processes. This is discussed specifically for the left-right symmetric model and the observation of a heavy <TEX>$ W_{R}$</TEX>, as well as model independently when measuring <TEX>$ \Updelta L = 2$</TEX> washout processes at the LHC or neutrinoless double beta decay.</P>

      • East Meets West: An Ancient Game Sheds New Light on US-Asian Strategic Relations

        It is widely shared that Pacific Asia is emerging as the powerhouse of the 21st century. This region has the enduring Sinic culture that holds profound philosophical, political, and strategic thoughts that set the nations in this region apart from the rest of the world community, especially the US-led West. The United States seeks to establish a strategic edge and productive relations with the nations in this region. For this foreign policy to bear fruit, the United States must, among other things, follow Sun Zi`s advice to learn more about Asian society. In one particular aspect, the United States will be better served to supplement its traditional Western approach, one that is under the influence of poker- and chess-like logic, with a wei qi-based Asian strategy of international relations. A little knowledge of the ancient board game wei qi will take US national leaders a long way in achieving the US foreign policy objectives. The game of wei qi is a significant part of many Asian cultures and greatly influences their geopolitical thinking and behavior. It bears striking resemblance to international relations and warfare. The wei qi-based strategy to international affairs follows clearly an Asian way that emphasizes the interplay of yin and yang. It also exemplifies the Chinese military classics to a remarkable extent. The wei qi concept is not available in Western military strategic thought and literature. It is, after all, a different game.

        Seasonal monitoring of Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) in a mixed fruit production system

        Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae), an invasive pest native to Southeast Asia, is nowreportedthroughout North America and Europe.We used traps baited with apple cider vinegar to monitor D. suzukii adultpresence inmultiple crops and associated fruiting plants at theWolfskill USDA GermplasmRepository in Winters,CA, USA from 2011 to 2013. Traps were placed in small (~160m × 40m on average) almond, apricot, cherry, fig,grape, mulberry, peach, persimmon, plum, and pomegranate deciduous fruit orchard blocks as well as a citrusblock and evergreen trees located near a house at the repository. D. suzukii was present in all blocks with thegreatest monthly deciduous fruit captures in the cherry and fig blocks. Few D. suzukii were captured in almond,apricot, pomegranate and grape blocks. Deciduous fruit blocks had two distinct periods of trap capture: springthrough midsummer and again in fall. Most deciduous fruit blocks had low trap captures during the hottestsummer months (August to September) and the coldest winter months (December to April). However, fromlate December through mid-January, high trap captures were associated with the citrus and house sites. Thisstudy provides seasonal trapping data of D. suzukii adults in an unsprayed multi-crop mosaic, and may serveas a model of adult capture patterns across smaller mixed-crop commercial orchards and associated urbanlandscapes.

      • Decreased Brain Zinc Availability Reduces Hippocampal Neurogenesis in Mice and Rats

        <P> In the adult brain, neurogenesis occurs in the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus (DG), where high levels of vesicular zinc are localized in the presynaptic terminals. To determine whether zinc has a role in modulating hippocampal neurogenesis under normal or pathologic conditions, we manipulated the level of vesicular zinc experimentally. To reduce hippocampal vesicular zinc, rats were either fed a zinc-deficient diet or treated with a zinc chelator, clioquinol (CQ). The number of progenitor cells and immature neurons was decreased significantly in the DG after 6 weeks of dietary zinc deprivation. Conversely, the number of progenitor cells and immature neurons was restored after a 2-week reversal to a normal zinc-containing diet. Similarly, a 1-week treatment with the zinc chelator, CQ, reduced the number of progenitor cells. The results of our previous study showed that hypoglycemia increased hippocampal neurogenesis. This study shows that zinc chelation reduced hypoglycemia-induced progenitor cell proliferation and neurogenesis. Finally, the role of vesicular zinc on neurogenesis was further assessed in zinc transporter 3 (ZnT3) gene deleted mice. Zinc transporter 3 knockout (KO) mice had significantly fewer proliferating progenitor cells and immature neurons after hypoglycemia. Our data provide converging evidence in support of the essential role zinc has in modulating hippocampal neurogenesis. </P>
