        Sub-level Classification and Prediction System of Fully Weathered Red Sandstone Rock Mass Based on Physical Property Indices

        This paper intends to obtain a sub-level classification of fully weathered red sandstone rock mass during the Cretaceous period based on physical property indices. An automatic prediction system for mechanical properties of rock mass is also established in which the values of rock mass grade and mechanical properties can be returned when physical indices are given. In this study, water content, relative compaction, and fine content, which are relatively easy to measure on tunnel sites, are selected as physical property indices, while cohesion, internal friction angle, and compression modulus, which affect mechanical strength, are taken as mechanical indices. For the convenience of analysis, rock mass of different physical states is divided into 18 different combinations based on the results of lab tests and rock mass stability of each state is evaluated using a stability evaluation criterion we put forward. The numerical simulation of tunnel excavation is further carried out for determining the sub-level classification. A decision tree model is applied for further studying the relationship between physical and mechanical indices to ensure accurate prediction. The result shows that the prediction system works with high accuracy and can be used for engineering reference for fully weathered red sandstone rock mass.

        中国香港地区CISG适用问题研究

        United Nations Convention on Contracts for International Sale of Goods (CISG) is considered as a core international trade law that may apply to a contract for international sales of goods by most countries in the world. CISG was legislated by United Nations Commission on International Trade Law in 1980 and China was one of the earliest nations that adopted CISG. Although Constitution of the People’s Republic of China states that Chinese territory covers the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, there is still a controversy as to whether CISG could be regarded as of applicable law in the Chinese mainland and other territorial units including Hong Kong. This is due to the different legal systems that each region is currently adopting. In this study, we will focus on the pros and cons of application of CISG to Hong Kong region. Even after Hong Kong’s return to Chinese rule, the central government of China still have not made any declaration regarding the application of CISG to Hong Kong for the reason that Hong Kong was once a British colony and United Kingdom was not of a contracting state of CISG. Until now Hong Kong’s application of CISG is instigating many arguments among states in the world. According to the cases of each country, civil law countries such as France claims that CISG should not be adopted by Hong Kong. In contrast, in the cases in common law countries such as United States of America states that CISG must be applied to Hong Kong. As such, there is no universal consensus with regard to this issue. This study will first summarize the positions of each state toward this issue and then analyze how the Chinese government must conduct for the greatest effect. This study will be conducted based on the assumption that the Chinese government is likely to declare that CISG is applicable to Hong Kong. However, it does not mean that this research will completely exclude the possibility that the Chinese government will continuously keep silence. As a participant in international trade, we are obligated to pronounce our opinions for this issue of the application of CISG to Hong Kong before the Chinese government finally makes a statement to this problem.

        Extracellular Proteome Profiling of Bacillus pumilus SCU11 Producing Alkaline Protease for Dehairing<sup>s</sup>

        Bacillus pumilus is one of the most characterized microorganisms that are used for high-level production of select industrial enzymes. A novel B. pumilus SCU11 strain possessing high alkaline protease activity was obtained in our previous work. The culture supernatant of this strain showed efficient dehairing capability with minimal collagen damage, indicating promising potential applications in the leather industry. In this study, the strain`s extracellular proteome was identified by LC-MS/MS-based shotgun proteomic analysis, and their related secretory pathways were characterized by BLAST searches. A total of 513 proteins, including 100 actual secreted and 413 intracellular proteins, were detected in the extracellular proteome. The functions of these secreted proteins were elucidated and four complete secretory systems (Sec, Tat, Com, and ABC transporter) were proposed for B. pumilus. These data provide B. pumilus a comprehensive extracellular proteome profile, which is a valuable theoretical and applicative basis for future genetic modifications and development of industrial enzymes.

      • <i>OsASR5</i> enhances drought tolerance through a stomatal closure pathway associated with ABA and H <sub>2</sub> O <sub>2</sub> signalling in rice

        <P><B>Summary</B></P><P>Drought is one of the major abiotic stresses that directly implicate plant growth and crop productivity. Although many genes in response to drought stress have been identified, genetic improvement to drought resistance especially in food crops is showing relatively slow progress worldwide. Here, we reported the isolation of <I>abscisic acid</I>,<I> stress</I> and <I>ripening</I> (<I>ASR</I>) genes from upland rice variety, IRAT109 (<I>Oryza sativa</I> L. ssp. <I>japonica</I>), and demonstrated that overexpression of <I>OsASR5</I> enhanced osmotic tolerance in <I>Escherichia coli</I> and drought tolerance in <I>Arabidopsis</I> and rice by regulating leaf water status under drought stress conditions. Moreover, overexpression of <I>OsASR5</I> in rice increased endogenous ABA level and showed hypersensitive to exogenous ABA treatment at both germination and postgermination stages. The production of H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>, a second messenger for the induction of stomatal closure in response to ABA, was activated in overexpression plants under drought stress conditions, consequently, increased stomatal closure and decreased stomatal conductance. In contrast, the loss‐of‐function mutant, <I>osasr5</I>, showed sensitivity to drought stress with lower relative water content under drought stress conditions. Further studies demonstrated that OsASR5 functioned as chaperone‐like protein and interacted with stress‐related HSP40 and 2OG‐Fe (II) oxygenase domain containing proteins in yeast and plants. Taken together, we suggest that <I>OsASR5</I> plays multiple roles in response to drought stress by regulating ABA biosynthesis, promoting stomatal closure, as well as acting as chaperone‐like protein that possibly prevents drought stress‐related proteins from inactivation.</P>
