        Nomogram for predicting overall survival in children with neuroblastoma based on SEER database

        Purpose: This study was performed to establish and validate a nomogram for predicting the overall survival in children with neuroblastoma. Methods: The latest clinical data of neuroblastoma in Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was extracted from 2000 to 2016. The cases included were randomly divided into training and validation cohorts. The survival curves were drawn with a Kaplan-Meier estimator to investigate the influences of certain single factors on overall survival. Also, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression was applied to further select the prognostic variables for neuroblastoma. Additionally, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and calibration curves were used to evaluate the accuracy of the nomogram. Results: In total, 1,262 patients were collected and 8 independent prognostic factors were achieved, including patients’ age, sex, race, tumor grade, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, tumor site, and tumor size. Then we constructed a nomogram by using the data of the training cohort with 886 cases. Subsequently, the nomogram was validated internally and externally with 886 and 376 cases, respectively. The internal validation revealed that the area under the curves (AUC) of ROC curves of 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival were 0.69, 0.78, and 0.81, respectively. Accordingly, the external validation also showed that the AUC of 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival were all ≥0.69. Both methods of validation demonstrated that the predictive calibration curves were consistent with standard curves. Conclusion: The nomogram possess the potential to be a new tool in predicting the survival rate of neuroblastoma patients.

      • Could Clinical Pathways Improve the Quality of Care in Patients with Gastrointestinal Cancer? A Meta-analysis

        This meta-analysis was performed to assess the implementation effects of clinical pathways in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. A comprehensive search was conducted in the Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (from inception to May 2014). Selection of studies, assessing risk of bias and extracting data were performed by two reviewers independently. Outcomes were analyzed by fixed-effects and random-effects model meta-analysis and reported as mean difference (MD), standardized mean difference (SMD) and odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). The Jadad methodological approach was used to assess the quality of included studies and the meta-analysis was conducted with RevMan 5.1 software. Nine citations (eight trials) involving 642 patients were included. The aggregate results showed that a shorter average length of stay [MD = -4.0; 95% CI (-5.1, -2.8); P < 0.00001] was observed with the clinical pathways as compared with the usual care. A reduction in inpatient expenditure [SMD = -1.5; 95% CI (-2.3, -0.7); P = 0.0001] was also associated with clinical pathways, along with higher patient satisfaction [OR = 4.9; 95% CI (2.2, 10.6); P < 0.0001]. Clinical pathways could improve the quality of care in patients with gastrointestinal cancer, as evidenced by a significant reduction in average length of stay, a decrease in inpatient expenditure and an improvement in patient satisfaction. Therefore, indicators and mechanisms within clinical pathways should be a focus in the future.

        The molecular mechanisms and factors affecting the feeding habits of silkworm (Lepidoptera: Bombyxidae)

        Food is critical to the survival and development of insects. Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae), a Lepi doptera model insect with economic significance, is a well-known oligophagous insect that mainly feeds on mulberry leaves. The feeding characteristics of this particular species provide an excellent model for studying the food selection of insect host plants. In recent years, there has been an increasing number of studies on the factors affecting the feeding of silkworms, especially with the development of molecular technology. Many mysteries have been gradually solved. This paper summarizes and discusses the factors that affect the feeding of silkworms, with a focus on the molecular mechanisms of silkworm feeding. It is hoped that this work will be helpful for further research on artificial diets for silkworms and disease control in lepidopteran insects.

        Predicting Golfers" Behavior with the Extended Theory of Planned Behavior

        The purpose of this research is to extend a new model based on Ajzen’s(1991) Theory of Planned Behavior(TPB), to predict golfers" intention and behavior, including Self-identity as an additional predictor variable in order to explain the explanatory capability of the TPB. Questionnaires focused on attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, self-identity, behavioral intention and behavior are administered to a sample of 276 China golfers. Establishing validity through confirmatory factor analysis(CFA), and structural equation modeling(SEM) are used to measure the relationships among various variables of golf participation behavior. Self-identity predicted golf intentions, above and beyond the effect of the TPB variables. Moreover, self-identity showed a significant effect with TPB-intention predictors. Self-identity forecasted behavior, but had no unique main effect on behavior in the TPB framework. The results suggest that self-identity operates as a predict factor in golf participation that interact with TPB variables in a characteristic way. The results will help managers of golf club create efficient marketing strategies to improve their performance.

Since the issue of “culture orientated national development” strategies in 1998, Korea, a neighboring country of China which lie across the Ocean, achieve a success development pattern over the past 20 years. Through examining the Korea cultural industries international promoting policy, this essay will provide the constructive ideas for China cultural industries global development pathway under the “a community of shared future for mankind” background.

      • UHRF2 mRNA Expression is Low in Malignant Glioma but Silencing Inhibits the Growth of U251 Glioma Cells in vitro

        UHRF2 is a member of the ubiquitin plant homeo domain RING finger family, which has been proven to be frequently up-regulated in colorectal cancer cells and play a role as an oncogene in breast cancer cells. However, the role of UHRF2 in glioma cells remains unclear. In this study, we performed real-time quantitative PCR on 32 pathologically confirmed glioma samples (grade I, 4 cases; grade II, 11 cases; grade III, 10 cases; and grade IV, 7 cases; according to the 2007 WHO classification system) and four glioma cell lines (A172, U251, U373, and U87). The expression of UHRF2 mRNA was significantly lower in the grade III and grade IV groups compared with the noncancerous brain tissue group, whereas its expression was high in A172, U251, and U373 glioma cell lines. An in vitro assay was performed to investigate the functions of UHRF2. Using a lentivirus-based RNA interference (RNAi) approach, we down-regulated UHRF2 expression in the U251 glioma cell line. This down-regulation led to the inhibition of cell proliferation, an increase in cell apoptosis, and a change of cell cycle distribution, in which S stage cells decreased and G2/M stage cells increased. Our results suggest that UHRF2 may be closely related to tumorigenesis and the development of gliomas.

        Whole Cell-mediated Biocatalytic Synthesis of Helicid Cinnamylate and Its Biological Evaluation as a Novel Tyrosinase Inhibitor

        Tyrosinase inhibitors are clinically effective for treating some dermatological disorders related to melanin hyperpigmentation. Accordingly, the discovery and development of tyrosinase inhibitors have great value in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry. Here, a novel tyrosinase inhibitor, 6′-O-cinnamoyl-helicid (helicid cinnamylate) was successfully synthesized by a simple and effective biocatalytic approach with Aspergillus oryzae cells. Investigation of the effects of several key variables on helicid cinnamylate synthesis found that the reaction conversion, reaction rate and regioselectivity reached 99%, 9.40 mM/h and > 99%, respectively, at the optimal conditions with anhydrous acetone as the solvent, whole-cell concentration of 40 mg/mL, and the molar ratio of vinyl cinnamate to helicid of 10 at 45°C. The whole-cells retained 68.87% of its initial activity after reusing for seven batches, indicating a potent application potential in non-aqueous biocatalytic systems. It was worth noting that helicid cinnamylate demonstrated a more potent tyrosinase inhibitory activity with an IC50 value of 3.55 mM than helicid (IC50 = 4.48 mM) and arbutin (IC50 = 5.48 mM), which suggest that helicid cinnamylate could be developed as a more potential tyrosinase inhibitor. In conclusion, this study provides a novel whole-cell catalytic approach for the synthesis of helicid cinnamylate and insight into its application as a tyrosinase inhibitor.

        Effects of Low Temperature and Lactate on Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Amniotic Mesenchymal Stem Cells

        A functional relationship between the growth and the progression of events associated with osteogenic differentiation of human amniotic mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSCs) has been a fundamental question, which remains unclear. This study is aimed at investigating the effects of low temperature and lactate individually, and in combination on the growth and osteogenic differentiation of hAMSCs. It was shown that the growth of hAMSCs in growth medium was inhibited by both low-cultivation temperature and lactate. By extending culture period at low temperature, cell growth declined gradually, while the ALP expression and calcium deposition increased progressively. However, the growth of hAMSCs induced in osteogenic medium at 37oC was markedly enhanced by additional lactate. The ALP expression and calcium deposition, on the contrary, were significantly depressed. Furthermore, the synergistic actions of long-term low temperature and lactate resulted in more intense inhibition on both cell growth and osteogenic differentiation.
