In this study, we developed a method for improving the production of polyphenol compounds and flavonoids from Korean thistle (Cirsium japonicum) extracts using hot-water extraction. In order to enhance the production of polyphenol compound and flavonoids, five independent variables (solvents, concentration, extraction time, extraction temperature, and solid-liquid ratio) were optimized. The results showed hot-water extraction using NaOH solution provided a higher total phenolic compounds (TPC) extraction than the organic solvents and the extraction using 1 N NaOH showed the highest production of TPC of 5.18 mg GAE/g DM. Among the tested variables, extraction temperature and time showed positive effects within tested levels of variables. The optimum extraction condition for TPC and flavonoids was obtained as follows: 1 N NaOH, extraction time of 40 min, reaction temperature of 120°C, and solid-liquid ratio of 10%(w/v). Under the optimum conditions of alkaline hot-water extraction, experimentally obtained TPC and flavonoid concentrations were 9.71 mg GAE/g DM and 2.23 mg QE/g DM, respectively. Therefore, alkaline hot-water extraction under mild condition was confirmed as an effective process for polyphenolic compounds and flavonoid production from Korean thistle.

This study identifies tween fashion consumers’ profiles in relation to fashion change agent (FCA) characteristics, such as fashion innovativeness and opinion leadership, and examines how the tweens’ FCA characteristics influence their Internet innovativeness, interest in online co-design involvement, and brand commitment. A survey was conducted with tween-aged girls in the Midwest region of the U.S., who were recruited through the snow ball sampling method. A total of 53 responses were acceptable for data analysis including cluster analysis, MANOVA, and multiple regression analyses. Results show the tween consumers were divided into two fashion consumer groups— fashion leaders and fashion followers—significantly different in fashion innovativeness and opinion leadership. This study also found positive effects of tweens’ FCA characteristics on Internet innovativeness, interest in online co-design involvement, and brand commitment. As FCAs with higher fashion innovativeness and opinion leadership influence the adoption and purchase behavior of other tween fashion consumers, marketers and retailers need to develop more fashion innovative, Internet-mediated, interactive, and brand-oriented marketing efforts. While the tween consumers in the children’s wear market has been featured, the prevailing literature on tween consumers’ fashion adoption and consumption is limited, particularly with regards to their FCA characteristics. This study highlights the important role of tween fashion consumers’ FCA characteristics in their online shopping orientation and brand commitment.

The purpose of this study was to investigate about current status of authentic science performance assessment in elementary schools. A total of 707 elementary teachers was involved and the data from questionnaire was gathered. The questionnaire was comprised two categories: items on the epistemological aspect & items on the actual condition. The major findings are as follows: 1. There are some elementary teachers who don't have a clear understanding on what authentic science performance assessment is even though most of teachers admit the importance of authentic performance assessment in their science teaching. 2. Many teachers have chosen and have used experimental activities or performance tasks rather than they have developed tasks of their own. 3. Many teachers have pointed out 'the lack of time for performance assessment preparation' and 'the limitation of class time' as the problems of working on science performance assessment in elementary schools.
