A nuclear material detection system based on neutron / gamma-ray hybrid system has been proposed for the container inspection at the sea port. The neutron from the inertial electrostatic confinement fusion source will be used for a fast pre-screening process by using both of neutrons and gamma-rays. The nuclear resonance fluorescence gamma-ray induced by quasi-monochromatic gamma-ray beam from the laser Compton Backscattering will be used in isotope identification for the precise post-screening process. The combination of two different probes, neutrons and gamma-rays, can detect nuclear material hidden by any kind of shielding.

Free Electron Lasers (FEL), which could be useful for developing energy materials, have been exploited at the Institute of Advanced Energy, Kyoto University. A mid-infrared FEL has been developed, and FEL gain saturation at 13.2 µm was achieved for the first time in May 2008. A FEL beam characterization was performed. A macro pulse energy of 5 mJ/pulse and a peak power of about 3 MW were achieved. A FEL beam transport system was constructed in the user room. Furthermore a tabletop THz FEL amplifier for the spectral range from 150 to 300 µm, which consists of a photocathode RF gun and an undulator, has been proposed to strengthen the materials research. For evaluation of the proposed design, a start-to-end simulation was carried out. An output power of about 350 kW is expected with the proposed system. TP53, MSH4, and LATS1 Germline Mutations in a Family with Clustering of Nervous System Tumors

Exome DNA sequencing of blood samples from a Li-Fraumeni family with a TP53 germline mutation (codon 236 deletion) and multiple nervous system tumors revealed additional germline mutations. Missense mutations in the MSH4 DNA repair gene (c.2480T>A; p.I827N) were detected in three patients with gliomas (two anaplastic astrocytomas, two glioblastomas). Two family members without a TP53 germline mutation who developed peripheral schwannomas also carried the MSH4 germline mutation, and in addition, a germline mutation of the LATS1 gene (c.286C>T; p.R96W). LATS1 is a downstream mediator of the NF2, but has not previously been found to be related to schwannomas. We therefore screened the entire coding sequence of the LATS1 gene in 65 sporadic schwannomas, 12 neurofibroma/schwannoma hybrid tumors, and 4 cases of schwannomatosis. We only found a single base deletion at codon 827 (exon 5) in a spinal schwannoma, leading to a stop at codon 835 (c.2480delG; p.*R827Kfs*8). Mutational loss of LATS1 function may thus play a role in some inherited schwannomas, but only exceptionally in sporadic schwannomas. This is the first study reporting a germline MSH4 mutation. Since it was present in all patients, it may have contributed to the subsequent acquisition of TP53 and LATS1 germline mutations.

The heating property of LaB_6 and CeB_6 cathodes is investigated against the Back Bombardment (BB) effect in thermionic RF guns using numerical calculation of the stopping range and deposited heat power inside the cathode materials. Then the change in a cathode temperature and corresponding change of current density during 5.5 μs pulse duration are determined by solving two differential equations. The simulation results show that, the change of current density during the macropulse for LaB_6 two times higher than for CeB_6, hence, the effect of the BB electrons in CeB_6 is less than for LaB_6.
