Vol.45 No.5

The purpose of this study was to detect association between genetic variation and economic trait in the porcine heart type fatty acid-binding protein gene as a candidate gene for the traits related with growth and meat quality in pigs. The H-FABP is a 15-kDa protein expressed in several tissues with high demand for fat metabolism such as cardiac and skeletal muscle and lactating mammary gland. H-FABP is small intracellular protein involved in fatty acid transport from the plasma membrane to the site of β-oxidation and/or triacylglycerol or phospholipid synthesis. In this study, H-FABP PCR-RFLP was performed in F_(2) population composed of 214 individuals form an intercross between Korean Native Boars and Landrace sows. PCR products form tow primer sets within H-FABP gene were amplified in 850bp and 700bp. Digestion of PCR products with the restriction digestion enzymes HaeⅢ and Hinf Ⅰ, revealed fragment length polymorphisms(RFL. Ps). The genotype frequencies from H-FABP/HaeⅢ was .29 for genotype DD, .53 for genotype Dd, and .15 for genotype dd, respectively. The genotype frequencies of HH, Hh, and hh from H-FABP(hinf Ⅰ was .38, .41, and .20, respectively, in the population.Relationships between their genotypes and economic traits were estimated. In H-FABP/HaeⅢ locus, there were specific genotypes(Dd and dd) associated with economic traits such as body weight. In H-FABP/Hinf Ⅰ Iocus, Genotypes of HH and Hh associated with growth traits such as body weights at 5, 12, and 30 week of age (p<.05 or p<.001) and back fat thickness, body fat including abdominal and trimmed fat (p<.001) and intramuscular fat(p<.05). The 'H'allele was positivecly associated with gaining of body weight and fatness deposition. In conclusion, a significant association of the H-FABP gene from its genetic variation was found on body weight, intramuscular fat and backfat thickness.

Amantadine-resistant influenza A viruses isolated in South Korea from 2003 to 2009

        Choi, W.Y.,Kim, S.,Lee, N.,Kwon, M.,Yang, I.,Kim, M.J.,Cheong, S.G.,Kwon, D.,Lee, J.Y.,Oh, H.B.,Kang, C. Elsevier/North-Holland 2009 ANTIVIRAL RESEARCH Vol.84 No.2

To investigate the frequency of amantadine resistance among influenza A viruses isolated in Korea during the 2003-2009 seasons, 369 (16.8%) 2199 A/H1N1 viruses and 780 (14.8%) of 5263 A/H3N2 viruses were randomly selected. The M2 and HA1 genes of each isolate were amplified by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and followed by nucleotide sequencing. The results showed that the resistance rate to amantadine among A/H1N1 viruses increased significantly from 2004-2005 (33.3%) to 2007-2008 (97.8%) and then decreased dramatically in 2008-2009 (1.9%). The A/H1N1 isolates recently detected in 2008-2009 turned amantadine-sensitive containing two new substitutions at specific sites (S141N, G185A) in HA1. Compared with A/H1N1 viruses, the amantadine resistance among the A/H3N2 viruses increased from 2003-2004 (9.7%) to 2005-2006 (96.7%) and decreased in 2006-2007 (57.4%). During 2006-2007, both of amantadine-resistant and -sensitive A/H3N2 viruses co-circulated but clustered in different branches phylogenetically. All of A/H3N2 isolates tested during 2007-2009 appeared to cluster in the same group being resistant to amantadine.

Vol.- No.49

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate sexual communication among college student couples and to analyze the relationship among sexual communication, sexual attitude, sexual autonomy and sexual satisfaction. Methods: Using a descriptive correlation study design, 281 college student couples were recruited through convenience random sampling from September 18th to October 3rd, 2014. Data were analyzed using average, standard deviation, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Duncan’s test and Pearson’s correlation using the SPSS 21.0 program. Results: In both genders, it is identified that high scores for sexual communication is related to sexual openness (male: R= .347, p<0.01 / female: R=.337, p<0.01) higher sexual satisfaction (male: R= .349, p<0.01 / female: R=.336, p<0.01) and sexual autonomy (male: R= .336, p<0.01 / female: R=.364, p<0.01). The same outcome is found when each male and female are grouped as a couple. Among sub-categories of sexual attitude, sexual pleasure was related to sexual communication the most in male (R=.337, p<0.01), female groups (R=.317, p<0.01) and couples (R=.402, p<0.01). Among sub-categories of sexual satisfaction, psychological factor was related to sexual communication the most in the male group (R=.342, p<0.01) and interactive factor was related to sexual communication the most in the female group (R=.317, p<0.01) and couples (R=.402, p<0.01). Conclusion: The significance of this research is that the relations of sexual communication with the other three dependent variables among each gender and couples are shown. In addition, this study suggests the importance of sexual communication between couples which will lead to healthier and better quality of sexual relationships. However, with the lack of sufficient advanced research, there are limitations of analyzing each variables divided by demographic characteristics.

      • Ice-templated three dimensional nitrogen doped graphene for enhanced supercapacitor performance

        Kota, M.,Yu, X.,Yeon, S.H.,Cheong, H.W.,Park, H.S. Elsevier Sequoia 2016 Journal of Power Sources Vol.303 No.-

The three-dimensional (3D), nitrogen doped reduced graphene oxide (N-RGO) monoliths have been synthesized using graphene oxide and melamine through an ice-templated assembly. The self-assembled monoliths are accompanied with the considerable reduction of graphene oxide after annealing and specific surface area of 190 m2 g-1. The blue shift of approximately 22 cm-1 and 4 cm-1 in D and G bands for N-RGO is notified in Raman analysis, confirming the incorporation of nitrogen onto the graphene sheet. In addition, an extra peak at 1251 cm-1 appears possibly due to the stretching vibration of C-N bonds. The detailed doping configurations analyzed by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy indicate the nitrogen content of around 6.2 at% in the N-RGO with predominant pyridinic N-type configuration. The specific capacitance is enhanced up to 217 F g-1 at a scan rate of 5 mV s-1, which is approximately three times higher than that of the pristine 3D RGO owing to the pseudocapacitive behavior of N-RGO. The high electronic conductivity of the N-RGO electrode with low charge transfer resistance as confirmed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is associated with good rate capability. Furthermore, the N-RGO sample exhibits an excellent cyclic stability with no decay in capacitance even after 5000 cycles at scan rate of 100 mV s-1.

Cytogenetic profiles of 2806 patients with acute myeloid leukemia—a retrospective multicenter nationwide study

        Byun, J. M.,Kim, Y. J.,Yoon, H. J.,Kim, S. Y.,Kim, H. J.,Yoon, J.,Min, Y. H.,Cheong, J. W.,Park, J.,Lee, J. H. Springer Science + Business Media 2016 Annals of hematology Vol.95 No.8

<P>The cytogenetic and molecular data is recognized as the most valuable prognostic factor in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Our aim was to systemically analyze the cytogenetics of Korean AML patients and to compare the cytogenetic profiles of various races to identify possible geographic heterogeneity. We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 2806 AML patients diagnosed at 11 tertiary teaching hospitals in Korea between January 2007 and December 2011. The most common recurrent chromosomal abnormality was t(8;21) (8.8 %, 238/2717), but t(15;17) showed an almost same number (8.6 %,235/2717). Among de novo AML, the most frequent aberrations were t(15;17), observed in 229 (10.7 %). The most common French-American-British (FAB) classification type was M2 (32.2 %), and recurrent cytogenetic abnormalities correlated with the FAB subtypes. Among 283 secondary AML cases, myelodysplastic syndrome was the most common predisposing factor. About 67.1 % of the secondary AML cases were associated with chromosomal aberrations, and chromosome 7 abnormalities (n = 45, 15.9 %) were most common. The incidence of FLT3 internal tandem duplication mutation was relatively low at 15 %. Our study reports certain similarities and differences in comparison to previous reports. Such discrepancies call for extensive epidemiological studies to clarify the role of genetic as well as geographic heterogeneity in the pathogenesis of AML.</P>

      • Flt3 Signaling-Dependent Dendritic Cells Protect against Atherosclerosis

        Choi, J.H.,Cheong, C.,Dandamudi, Durga B.,Park, C.,Rodriguez, A.,Mehandru, S.,Velinzon, K.,Jung, I.H.,Yoo, J.Y.,Oh, G.,Steinman, Ralph M. Cell Press 2011 Immunity Vol.35 No.5

Early events in atherosclerosis occur in the aortic intima and involve monocytes that become macrophages. We looked for these cells in the steady state adult mouse aorta, and surprisingly, we found a dominance of dendritic cells (DCs) in the intima. In contrast to aortic adventitial macrophages, CD11c+MHC IIhi DCs were poorly phagocytic but were immune stimulatory. DCs were of two types primarily: classical Flt3-Flt3L signaling-dependent, CD103+CD11b- DCs and macrophage-colony stimulating factor (M-CSF)-dependent, CD14+CD11b+DC-SIGN+ monocyte-derived DCs. Both types expanded during atherosclerosis. By crossing Flt3-/- to Ldlr-/- atherosclerosis-prone mice, we developed a selective and marked deficiency of classical CD103+ aortic DCs, and they were associated with exacerbated atherosclerosis without alterations in blood lipids. Concomitantly, the Flt3-/-Ldlr-/- mice had fewer Foxp3+ Treg cells and increased inflammatory cytokine mRNAs in the aorta. Therefore, functional DCs are dominant in normal aortic intima and, in contrast to macrophages, CD103+ classical DCs are associated with atherosclerosis protection.

      • Organic-inorganic hybrid photocatalyst for carbon dioxide reduction

        Won, D. I.,Lee, J. S.,Cheong, H. Y.,Cho, M.,Jung, W. J.,Son, H. J.,Pac, C.,Kang, S. Royal Society of Chemistry 2017 Faraday discussions Vol.198 No.-

<P>Efficient hybrid photocatalysts for carbon dioxide reduction were developed from dye-sensitized TiO2 nanoparticles and their catalytic performance was optimized by ternary organic/inorganic components. Thus, the hybrid system consists of (E)-2-cyano-3-(5'(5 ''-(p-(diphenylamino)phenyl)thiophen-2 ''-yl)thiophen-2'-yl)-acrylic acid as a sensitizer and fac-[Re(4,4'-bis(diethoxyphosphorylmethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine)(CO)(3)Cl] as a reduction catalyst (ReP), both of which have been fixed onto TiO2 semiconductors (s-TiO2, h-TiO2, d-TiO2). Mott-Schottky analysis on flat-band potential (E-fb) of TiO2 mesoporous films has verified that Efb can be finely modulated by volume variation of water (0 to 20 vol%). The increase of added water resulted in substantial positive shifts of Efb from -1.93 V at 0 vol% H2O, to -1.74 V (3 vol% H2O), to -1.56 V (10 vol% H2O), and to -1.47 V (20 vol% H2O). As a result, with addition of 3-10 vol% water in the photocatalytic reaction, conversion efficiency of CO2 to CO increased significantly reaching a TON value of similar to 350 for 30 h. Catalytic activity enhancement is mainly attributed to (1) the optimum alignment of Efb by 3-10 vol% water with respect to the E-ox* of the dye and E-red of ReP for smooth electron transfer from photo-excited dye to ReP via the TiO2 semiconductor and (2) the water-induced acceleration of chemical processes on the fixed ReP. In addition, the energy level was further tuned by variation of the dye and ReP amounts. We also found that the intrinsic properties of TiO2 sources (morphology, size, agglomeration) exert a great influence on the overall photocatalytic activity of this hybrid system. Implications of the present observations and reaction mechanisms are discussed in detail.</P>

Oxidation Behavior of Steel With Cr Content and Water Flow Rate

        Kim, D.-J.,Kim, K.M.,Shin, J.H.,Cheong, Y.M.,Lee, E.H.,Lee, G.G.,Kim, S.W.,Kim, H.P.,Choi, M.J.,Lim, Y.S.,Hwang, S.S. PAS 2017 ARCHIVES OF METALLURGY Vol.62 No.2

<P>Fast water flow facilitates ferrous ion transport leading to flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) of carbon steel and the possibility of a large accident through a failure of a secondary pipe in a nuclear power plant. Ion transport is directly linked to oxide properties such as the thickness, chemical composition and porosity. This work deals with a precise observation of the cross section of the corroded specimen focusing on an oxide passivity and its thickness using SEM (scanning electron microscope) and TEM (transmission electron microscope) as well as an apparent weight loss and a surface observation for the specimens corroded using a rotating cylindrical electrode autoclave system in pure water of pH 7 at 150 degrees C having dissolved oxygen below 1 ppb within a flow rate range of 0 to 10 m/s. The Cr content in steel was changed from 0.02 to 2.4 wt%. Increasing the Cr content in the alloy, the FAC rate and oxide thickness decreased. The oxide porosity tends to decrease with the Cr content and immersion time owing to the development of Cr containing oxide. The oxidation behavior is not changed with the immersion time.</P>

Vol.- No.1

The eddy current(EC) signals were evaluated for gap measurement of cross aligned zirconium tubes for preventing the contact which might be the safety concern. Liquid lnjection Nozzle(LIN) tube and Calandria tube(CT) were cross-aligned horizontally and LIN could be detected by inserting the EC probe into pressure tube (PT). Signal analysis on the voltage plane was applied to describe the position and shape of possible defects using several frequencies. Test variables are lift-off, PT thickness variation, and gap variation between PT and CT All the EC measurements in the laboratory were done in variance with the gap spacings and showed the possibility to evaluate the gap between CT. and LIN tube by analyzing the signal on voltage plane. Electromagnetic technique could be a potential tool for inspecting the inter-tube gap in CANDU reactor.

Vol.24 No.2

Liquid Injection Nozzle(LIN) tube and Calandria tube(CT) in Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) are cross-aligned horizontally. These neighboring tubes can contact each other due to the sag of the calandria tube resulting from the irradiation creep and thermal creep, and fuel load, etc. In order to judge the contact which might be the safety concern, the remote field eddy current (RFEC) technology is applied for the gap measurement in this paper LIN can be detected by inserting the RFEC probe into pressure tube (PT) at the crossing point directly. To obtain the optimal conditions of the RFEC inspection, the sensitivity, penetration and noise signals are considered simultaneously. The optimal frequency and coil spacing are 1 ㎑ and 200 ㎜ respectively. Possible noises during LIN signal acquisition are caused by lift-off, PT thickness variation, and gap variation between PT and CT. The simulated noise signals were investigated by the Volume Integral Method(VIM). Signal analysis on the voltage plane describes the amplitude and shape of LIN and possible defects at several frequencies. All the RFEC measurements in the laboratory were done in variance with the CT/LIN gap and showed the relationship between the LIN gap and the signal parameters by analyzing the voltage plane signals.
