<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We report a simple method for preparing flexible polymer film containing carbon quantum dots/N-doped ZnO (CQD/N-ZnO) nanoparticles, as UV shielding material. The polymer film showed an enhanced UV shielding capability with increasing of CQD/N-ZnO nanoparticles. The maximum of 47% of UV shielding capability was achieved with 1 wt.% of CQD/N-ZnO nanoparticles and two-order enhancement was achieved by controlling film thickness to 250 μm. It was found that CQDs plays important role to promote compatibility of hydrophilic ZnO into hydrophobic polymer matrix without disturbing the transparency of the film. An excellent UV shielding capability of 85% and 92% was witnessed in 250 μm thick polymer film under a UV lamp and direct daylight, respectively.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Free-standing and flexible polymer films were prepared with CQD/N-ZnO nanoparticles. </LI> <LI> Owing to the surface modification by the CQDs, CQD/N-ZnO nanoparticles were able to disperse readily in the polymer matrix. </LI> <LI> High transparency polymer films were obtained due to better dispersion of CQD/N-ZnO nanoparticles. </LI> <LI> The CQDs assist to improve the dispersion N-ZnO in polymer matrix. </LI> <LI> An excellent UV-shielding property, irrespective to different light sources. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>A free-standing and flexible polymer film containing CQD/N-ZnO nanoparticles can be explored as potential candidate as UV light filter. 최초 진단 당시 다발성의 두개강외 전이를 동반한 미분화성 수막종-증례보고-

본 저자들은 70세 여자에서 발생한 두개강외의 다발성 전이를 동반한 우측 전두엽의 미분화성 수막종 의 드문 증례를 보고하고자 한다. 상기 환자는 2년여정도 전부터 서서히 자라는 우측 전두엽의 종양을 주소로 내원하였다. 두부 MRI 상 2.5x3.0cm 정도 크기의 종양이 우측 전두엽에 위치하고 있었으며, 종양주변으로의 심한 뇌부종을 동반하고 있었다. 그리고 종양 외측의 두개골에 골파괴성 병변을 포함하 고 있었으며, 두개골 외측의 피하조직내에도 1.0x2.0cm 정도 크기의 종양이 관찰되었다. 침범된 두개골을 포함하여 종양에 대한 전적출술과 함께 두개골성형술이 이루어졌으며, 종양은 조직검사 결과 미분화성 수막종으로 진단되었다. 그리고 간, 척추, 림프절 등에 다발성 전이가 흉복부 CT 촬영 등을 통해 확인되었으나, 환자의 자의로 인하여 더 이상의 검사 및 치료는 중단되었다. 이후 환자는 6개 월 후 우측전두엽의 수막종의 재발로 내원하였고, 간에서의 전이 역시 더욱 진행된 것이 확인되었다. 본 증례에서처럼 두개골 침범을 동반하는 공격적인 모습을 가진 수막종의 경우, 드물지만 전신으로의 두개강외 전이의 가능성을 염두에 두고 최초 진단시 전신에 대한 검사를 고려해야 할 것으로 생각된다. 또한 국소 재발이나 두개강외 전이를 막기 위해 방사선치료 등을 적극적으로 고려하는 것이 재발이나 전이를 막는데 도움이 될 것으로 생각되어 문헌 고찰과 함께 본 증례를 보고하고자 한다

<P>Instant blood-mediated inflammatory reaction (IBMIR) causes rapid islet loss in portal vein islet transplantation. Endothelial cells are known to protect against complement-mediated lysis and activation of coagulation. We tested composite pig islet-human endothelial cell grafts as a strategy to overcome IBMIR. Porcine islets were cocultured with human endothelial cells in specially modified culture medium composed of M199 and M200 for 1-9 days. A positive control group, negative control group, and the endothelial cell-coated group were examined with an in vitro tubing loop assay using human blood. The endothelial cell-coated group was subdivided and analyzed by degree of surface coverage by endothelial cells (< or = 50% vs. > 50%) or coculture time (< 5 days vs. > or = 5 days). Platelet consumption and complement and coagulation activation were assessed by platelet count, C3a, and thrombin-antithrombin complex (TAT), respectively. After 60-min incubation in human blood, the endothelial cell-coated group showed platelet consumption inhibition and low C3a and TAT assay results compared to uncoated controls. When the endothelial cell-coated group was subdivided by degree of surface coverage, the < or = 50% coated group showed less platelet consumption and less activation of complement and coagulation compared with the positive control (uncoated) group. On analysis by coculture time, only the subgroup cocultured for < 5 days showed the same protective effect. Human endothelial cell-coated pig islets, especially the partially coated and short-term cocultured pig islet-human endothelial cell composites, reduced all components of IBMIR. If the optimal endothelial cell-islet coculture method could be identified, human endothelial cell coating of pig islets would offer new strategies to improve xenogenic islet transplantation outcomes.</P>

<P>The extragalactic background light (EBL) captures the total integrated emission from stars and galaxies throughout the cosmic history. The amplitude of the near-infrared EBL from space absolute photometry observations has been controversial and depends strongly on the modeling and subtraction of the zodiacal light (ZL) foreground. We report the first measurement of the diffuse background spectrum at 0.8-1.7 mu m from the CIBER experiment. The observations were obtained with an absolute spectrometer over two flights in multiple sky fields to enable the subtraction of ZL, stars, terrestrial emission, and diffuse Galactic light. After subtracting foregrounds and accounting for systematic errors, we find the nominal EBL brightness, assuming the Kelsall ZL model, is 42.7(-10.6) (+11.9) nW m(-2) sr(-1) at 1.4 mu m. We also analyzed the data using the Wright ZL model, which results in a worse statistical fit to the data and an unphysical EBL, falling below the known background light from galaxies at. lambda<. 1.3 mu m. Using a model-independent analysis based on the minimum EBL brightness, we find an EBL brightness of 28.7(-3.3)(+5.1) nWm(-2) s(r-1) at 1.4 mu m. While the derived EBL amplitude strongly depends on the ZL model, we find that we cannot fit the spectral data to ZL, Galactic emission, and EBL from solely integrated galactic light from galaxy counts. The results require a new diffuse component, such as an additional foreground or an excess EBL with a redder spectrum than that of ZL.</P>
Sound wave improves drought and salt tolerance in rice plant in wavelength specific manner

We investigated whether sound waves could improve salt tolerance in rice seedling. The rice seedlings were sound treated with 800 Hz for 1hr, and then treated with 0, 75, 150, and 225mM NaCl for 3 days to observe changes in physiological and morphological aspects. Sound treatment seedlings resulted in enhanced salt stress tolerance, mainly demonstrated by the sound treated seedlings exhibiting of increased root relative water contents (RWC), root length and weight, photochemical efficiency (ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence, Fv/Fm), and germination rate under salt stress condition. This demonstrates that a specific sound wave might be used, not only to alter gene expression in plant, but also to improve salt stress tolerance. In order to test the sound’s effect on plant and its contribution in drought tolerance, plants were subjected to various sound frequencies for an hrs. After 24-hrs sound treatment, plants were exposed to drought for next five days. During the experiment it was observed that sound initiated physiological changes showing tolerance in plant. Sound frequency with ≥ 0.8 kHz enhanced relative water content, stomatal conductance and quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm ratio) in drought stress environment. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production in sound treated plantwasdeclinedcomparedtocontrol. ThermaCAM (Infra-red camera) a software which was used to analyze the plant images temperature showed that sound treated plant and leaf had less temperature (heat) compared to control. The physiological mechanism of sound frequencies induce tolerance in rice plants are discussed.
Hydrothermal Reaction for the Preparation of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3

Fine powders of perovskite structured manganites, La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3, were synthesized by using a hydrothermal reaction, followed by a calcination reaction in some cases. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed the desired composition without other impurity phases after calcination. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed clean and pure images. The magnetic property measurement was performed in a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition temperature of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 was around 240 K and of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 was around 350 K.hiK
