Development of a total variation noise reduction algorithm for chest digital tomosynthesis

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Chest digital tomosynthesis (CDT) is developed to solve the problem of overlapping and absence of depth information as seen in general X-rays applied in chest radiography and high-exposure dose problem of computed tomography. However, in CDT, noise can reduce the quality of the image and increase the rate of false diagnosis. Thus, noise removal is an important issue in the clinical application of CDT, and a total variation (TV)-based noise reduction algorithm is an excellent algorithm because of its high noise reduction efficiency. In this study, we demonstrate the superiority of the TV noise reduction algorithm by quantitative comparisons of analyses with conventional algorithms. The quantitative evaluation of the image quality, coefficient of variation (COV), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and intensity profile are evaluated. The COV and CNR results in the TV noise reduction algorithm are 1.88 times lower and 1.54 times higher than those of the original image, respectively; the smoothest graph is also obtained in the intensity profile. In conclusion, it is expected that the quality of the CDT image processed using the TV noise reduction algorithm is better than that processed using conventional noise reduction methods and the use of our algorithm will increase in the clinical field in the future.</P>

<P>Resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL's) are assumed to be a prospective solution for commercialization. But in spite of excellent current limiting performances realized by resistive SFCL's, commercialization and installation of SFCL's have been delayed due to difficulties in overcoming several technical problems such as a coordination with conventional relays. Resistive SFCL's may have difficulty in controlling an initiation of current limiting operation that sometimes is very important for coordination with relays, because the superconductor in the SFCL will quench immediately after the fault current reaches its critical current. In order to solve these problems, a novel hybrid SFCL of the first half cycle non-limiting type was developed. This paper presents the characteristics of this hybrid SFCL, its configuration and test results.</P>

Background: In psoriasis treatment, not all body regions improve simultaneously after clinical interventions. Objective: This study was aimed at evaluating clinical responses across body regions, which may differentially influence patient treatment plans. Methods: This prospective, observational, and multi-center study was conducted in Koreans who adhered to ustekinumab treatment based on criteria per local label and reimbursement guidelines. A total of 581 were included in this analysis. Results: The mean (±standard deviation) psoriasis area severity index (PASI) score at baseline, age, disease duration, and body surface area (%) were 18.9±9.69, 44.2±13.29 years, 11.3±9.65 years, and 27.8±17.83, respectively. Across the head and neck, upper extremities, trunk, and lower extremities, the correlation between the PASI sub-scores for the upper and lower extremities was the highest (r=0.680). The mean PASI sub-score for the lower extremities was the highest at baseline. PASI90 and PASI100 scores were the highest for the head and neck region, indicating the highest response rates, while those for the lower extremities were consistently low at all visits. Conclusion: We found differences in regional ustekinumab responses, with the lower extremities being the most difficult to treat. These findings should be considered in psoriasis treatment.

In this study, the microstructure of the CVD-fabricated Cu(In,Ga)Se₂ (CIGSe) absorber layer by simulating the stacking sequence used in a co-evaporation method, and changes solar cell performance were investigated. The absorber layer prepared by stacking CuSe and (In,Ga)Se between InSe is separated into Ga-free CuInSe₂ and Ga-rich CIGSe, and transformed to CIGSe by selenization heat treatment with slight improvement in the the solar cell efficiency. However, in CVD, since the supply of liquid Cu-Se is not as active as in the co-evaporation method, the nanoocrystalline layer containing a large amount of Ga remained independently in the absorption layer, which acted as a cause of the loss of JSC and FF. Therefore, by using a precursor structure in which CuGa is sputter-deposited on a single layer of InSe deposited by CVD, performance parameters of VOC, JSC, and FF could be greatly improved.

<P>We report on rapid thermal chemical vapor depositiongrowth of silicon nanowires (Si NWs) that contain a high density ofgold nanoclusters (Au NCs) with a uniform coverage over the entirelength of the nanowire sidewalls. The Au NC-coated Si NWs with anantibody-coated surface obtain the unique capability to capture breastcancer cells at twice the highest efficiency currently achievable(∼88% at 40 min cell incubation time) from a nanostructuredsubstrate.
