        High Latitude Antarctic Benthos: A 'Coevolution' of Nature Conservation and Ecosystem Research?

        Due to international law the Antarctic is currently the best protected large ecosystem on earth, providing the opportunity for scientific research into processes of both regional and global importance. However, it is impossible to carry out research activities without minor disturbances to the environment. The Weddell Sea with its shelf inhabiting fauna can be considered to be representative for the entire Antarctic shelf with exceptions. It has generally escaped major anthropogenic impact but it is the only area in the high latitude Antarctic where long-term research fishing has been carried out. There are two main results combining aspects of nature conservation and benthos research. Firstly, the use of dredges has clearly decreased over the last two decades, whilst the use of non-invasive underwater photography and video has significantly increased. Secondly, during the same period icebergs destroyed an area of the seafloor and its fauna more than 2000-times greater than the area affected by research trawls. The increased use of imaging methods, Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) and other modem instruments, as well as statistically based and coordinated sampling strategies can contribute to both a better understanding of ecosystem function and to an ongoing reduction in anthropogenic impact.

        1) electron-microprobe를 응용하여 $CaO-SiO_2-Al_2O_3$ 계에서 생성한 $C_2S$, $C_3S$ 에 존재하는 sulfate의 solid, solution을 정량적으로 구할 수 있었으며 이 결과로 $C_2S$ 에 $Al_2O_3$, $SO_3$ 등이 solid soln 등으로 침적되고 이들이 $C_3S$의 생성을 억제한다는 mechanism이 확인되었다. 2) phase equilibrium(상평형)에 의하면 $Na_2SO_4$, $K_2SO_4$는 mineralizer로서 작용하며 $C_3S$ 의 생성을 돕는다. 그러나 $K_2SO_4$ 와 $Al_2SO_3$ 가 결합상태로 존재할 경우는 1,400 $^{\circ}C$에서 광범위한 liquid를 생성하며 quenching하면 glass질과 $\beta-C_2S$ 만이 얻어지고 $C_3S$ 는 생성되지 않는다. 또 이를 1,250 $^{\circ}C$ 까지 서냉하면 $C_2S$ 와 Ca, K, Al, S, 등을 함유한 새로운 물질이 생성된다. 3) $CaO-SiO_2-Al_2O_3-Fe_2O_3$ 계에서 $C_3S$ 의 생성에 미치는 $Na_2SO_4$, $K_2SO_4$ 의 영향을 실험실적으로 검토한 결과 complex interaction이 확인되었으며 $Na_2SO_4$ 는 어떤 경우에는 mineralizing effect를 상실한다는 재미 있는 사실이 발견되었다.

        Bible Translation and Globalization —a Cognitive Perspective

        As the range of information on offer in the global information market keeps growing, the Bible, as one of the most widely translated books, faces increasing competition. Applying cognitive insights into the inferential nature of communication, this paper highlights the significance of the cognitive communicability condition for successful communication. This condition is particularly important in Bible translation because the incongruity in cognitive environments between receptors and original readership is often very high. Another problem is the term ‘translation’ in that the expectations it raises tend not to be standardized and that they lack in realism with respect to the cognitive workings of communication. The paper makes suggestions for how both these problem areas might be addressed. It ends by pointing out how a clearer recognition of the cognitive communicability condition can be of value more generally in globalization.

      • Resolving high-speed colloidal dynamics beyond detector response time via two pulse speckle contrast correlation.

        <P>We report an alternate light scattering approach to measure intermediate scattering function and structures of colloidal suspension by using two-pulse speckle contrast correlation analysis. By systematically controlling time-delays between two laser pulses incident on the sample, we are able to monitor transient evolution of coherent diffraction pattern, from which particle dynamics at different length and time scales are obtained simultaneously. Our result demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing a megapixel detector to achieve sufficient data statistics in a short amount of time while enabling microsecond time-resolution. Ultimately, this method provides means to measure high-speed dynamics well beyond the time response limit of a large area two-dimensional (2D) detector.</P>

      • Configuration of the Northern Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet at LGM based on a new synthesis of seabed imagery

        <P><p><strong>Abstract.</strong> We present a new seafloor map for the northern Antarctic Peninsula (AP), including swath multibeam data sets from five national programs. Our map allows for the examination and interpretation of Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) paleo-ice-flow paths developed on the seafloor from the preservation of mega-scale glacial lineations, drumlinized features, and selective linear erosion. We combine this with terrestrial observations of flow direction to place constraints on ice divides and ice domes on the AP continental shelf during the LGM time interval. The results show a flow bifurcation as ice exits the Larsen B embayment. Flow emanating off the Seal Nunataks (including Robertson Island) is directed toward the southeast, then eastward as the flow transits toward the Robertson Trough. A second, stronger 'streaming flow' is directed toward the southeast, then southward as ice overflowed the tip of the Jason Peninsula to reach the southern perimeter of the embayment. Our reconstruction also refines the extent of at least five other distinct paleo-ice-stream systems that, in turn, serve to delineate seven broad regions where contemporaneous ice domes must have been centered on the continental shelf at LGM. Our reconstruction is more detailed than other recent compilations because we followed specific ice-flow indicators and have kept tributary flow paths parallel.</p> </P>
