• Configuration of the Northern Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet at LGM based on a new synthesis of seabed imagery

        Lavoie, C.,Domack, E. W.,Pettit, E. C.,Scambos, T. A.,Larter, R. D.,Schenke, H.-W.,Yoo, K. C.,Gutt, J.,Wellner, J.,Canals, M.,Anderson, J. B.,Amblas, D. Copernicus GmbH 2015 The cryosphere Vol.9 No.2

Abstract. We present a new seafloor map for the northern Antarctic Peninsula (AP), including swath multibeam data sets from five national programs. Our map allows for the examination and interpretation of Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) paleo-ice-flow paths developed on the seafloor from the preservation of mega-scale glacial lineations, drumlinized features, and selective linear erosion. We combine this with terrestrial observations of flow direction to place constraints on ice divides and ice domes on the AP continental shelf during the LGM time interval. The results show a flow bifurcation as ice exits the Larsen B embayment. Flow emanating off the Seal Nunataks (including Robertson Island) is directed toward the southeast, then eastward as the flow transits toward the Robertson Trough. A second, stronger 'streaming flow' is directed toward the southeast, then southward as ice overflowed the tip of the Jason Peninsula to reach the southern perimeter of the embayment. Our reconstruction also refines the extent of at least five other distinct paleo-ice-stream systems that, in turn, serve to delineate seven broad regions where contemporaneous ice domes must have been centered on the continental shelf at LGM. Our reconstruction is more detailed than other recent compilations because we followed specific ice-flow indicators and have kept tributary flow paths parallel.

A Multidisciplinary Approach for Model Predictive Control Education: A Lego Mindstorms NXT-based Framework

        Massimo Canale,Simone Casale-Brunet 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2014 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.12 No.5

This work introduces an educational framework based on the Lego Mindstorms NXT robotic platform used to outline both the theoretical and practical aspects of the Model Predictive Control (MPC) theory. The framework has been developed in the widely used MatLab/Simulink environment. A two-wheeled inverted pendulum is considered as hands-on experimental scenario. For such a system, starting from its mathematical modeling, an established design methodology is presented aiming to outline step-by-step the predictive controller implementation on a low power architecture. This methodology stress the design of a non-linear MPC controller on a low power embedded system, pruning the designer to deal with hard real time constraints without impacting the overall design requirements. The effectiveness of this multidisciplinary approach is shown through this presentation and demonstrated with experimental results.

Impact of a long-lasting adult liquid diet on female reproductive performance in the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae)

        Angelo Canale,Gabriele Gennari,Valeria Leoni,Russell H. Messing,Giovanni Benelli 한국응용곤충학회 2015 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.18 No.2

Researchers in many countries have devoted great effort to the development and validation of the sterile insect technique (SIT) against a number of tephritid species. To improve SIT cost-effectiveness and applicability against these serious economic pests, itwould be useful to improve currentmass-rearing procedures. While the benefits of using liquid larval diets have beenwidely tested, liquid diets for adult feeding have received far less attention. Here, we report on the impact of low-cost adult liquid diets with a range of sugar:protein ratios on female reproductive performance (i.e. pre-oviposition period, female egg load, larval–pupal developmental rate, adult emergence, sex ratio and longevity of offspring) in the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata. Protein-deprived females required longer pre-oviposition time and had reduced egg load. No differences were found in the reproductive performance of females fed with liquid vs. solid diet. The proposed liquid diet is readily available to the feeding behaviour of tephritid flies and lasts three times longer than the solid diet composed of the same ingredients.

SPECULATION AND MONETARY POLICY BEHAVIOUR IN THE 1992 CURRENCY CRISIS: THE ITALIAN CASE

        Rosaria Rita Canale,Alberto Montagnoli,Oreste Napolitano 한국국제경제학회 2008 International Economic Journal Vol.22 No.3

The paper proposes an explanation for the 1992 currency crisis as the result of monetary policy behaviour and private agents’ speculation. Our analysis reveals how speculators’ expectations and the behaviour of the monetary policy authority were formed on the widespread beliefs about the future value of income. We show that the real effects of monetary policy measures represent the link between the action of the Central Bank and speculation.

Photo-selective nets differentially affect microclimatic conditions, leaf physiological characteristics, and yield in hazelnut \(Corylus avellana L.)

        Felipe Salazar-Canales,Richard M. Bastías,Arturo Calderón-Orellana,Rosemarie Wilckens,Esteban González 한국원예학회 2021 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.62 No.6

Photo-selective colored nets have been used as a tool to reduce climatic stress and improve yields in horticultural crops, butthere is no knowledge regarding responses of hazelnut crops under these nets. The objective of this research was to study theinfl uence of photo-selective nets on the microclimate, physiological characteristics of leaves, and yield in hazelnut. Duringthree consecutive seasons, a hazelnut orchard ´Tonda di Giff oni´ was covered with black, blue-gray, and pearl-gray colorednets with a standard density of 4 warp and weft threads cm −1 . Uncovered trees were used as the control. Microclimaticconditions (solar radiation intensity and composition, air temperature, relative humidity, and vapor pressure defi cit, VPD),yield components (accumulated yield; yield by harvest date; fruit weight, FW; and seed weight, SW), and leaf physiologicalcharacteristics (net photosynthesis rate, A n ; stomatal conductance, g s ; specifi c leaf weight, SLW; and stomatal density, SD)were evaluated. Pearl-gray netting had the greatest increase in diff use (47%) and global (5%) solar radiation compared toblue-gray and black nettings. VPD decreased by 12% under black netting, but only by 5% under pearl-gray and blue-graynetting. Pearl-gray nets signifi cantly increased accumulated yield, FW, and SW by 12, 13, and 6% compared to the control, respectively. Black and blue-gray nets reduced SD by 8 and 30% and SLW by 15 and 20%, respectively. Pearl-gray nettingdid not alter either SD or SLW. A signifi cant relationship between A n and g s was found under all nets, but not for the control. The relationship between A n and g s was signifi cantly positive for pearl-gray netting and negative for blue-gray netting. Photo-selective netting is a physiology-based tool that improves yield in hazelnut orchards under extreme climate conditions. Pearl-gray netting is the most promising alternative for this fruit crop.

High-plasticity mineral trioxide aggregate and its effects on M1 and M2 macrophage viability and adherence, phagocyte activity, production of reactive oxygen species, and cytokines

Vasconcellos Betânia Canal,Tavares Layara Cristine Tomaz,da Silva Danilo Couto,Fonseca Francielen Oliveira,Benetti Francine,Sobrinho Antônio Paulino Ribeiro,Tavares Warley Luciano Fonseca 대한치과보존학회 2023 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.48 No.1

Objectives This study evaluated the effects of high-plasticity mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA-HP) on the activity of M1 and M2 macrophages, compared to white MTA (Angelus). Materials and Methods Peritoneal inflammatory M1 (from C57BL/6 mice) and M2 (from BALB/c mice) macrophages were cultured in the presence of the tested materials. Cell viability (MTT and trypan blue assays), adhesion, phagocytosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β production were evaluated. Parametric analysis of variance and the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test were used. Results were considered significant when p < 0.05. Results The MTT assay revealed a significant decrease in M1 metabolism with MTA-HP at 24 hours, and with MTA and MTA-HP later. The trypan blue assay showed significantly fewer live M1 at 48 hours and live M2 at 48 and 72 hours with MTA-HP, compared to MTA. M1 and M2 adherence and phagocytosis showed no significant differences compared to control for both materials. Zymosan A stimulated ROS production by macrophages. In the absence of interferon-γ, TNF-α production by M1 did not significantly differ between groups. For M2, both materials showed higher TNF-α production in the presence of the stimulus, but without significant between-group differences. Likewise, TGF-β production by M1 and M2 macrophages was not significantly different between the groups. Conclusions M1 and M2 macrophages presented different viability in response to MTA and MTA-HP at different time points. Introducing a plasticizer into the MTA vehicle did not interfere with the activity of M1 and M2 macrophages. • A Primary-Side-Assisted Zero-Voltage and Zero-Current Switching

        S.J.Jeon,F Canales,P.M.Barbosa,F.C.Lee 전력전자학회 2001 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.2001 No.10

A new primary-side-assisted zero-voltage and zero-current switching (ZVZCS) three-level DC-DC converter with flying capacitor is proposed The three-level converters are promising in high voltage applications, and ZVZCS is a very effective means for reducing switching losses The proposed DC-DC converter uses only one auxiliary transformer and two diodes to obtain ZCS for the inner leg It has a simple and robust structure, and offers soft-switching capability even in short-circuited conditions The proposed converter was verified by experiments in a 6KW prototype designed for communication applications and operating at 100 kHz.
Characterization of hypotensive and vasorelaxant effects of PHAR-DBH-Me a new cannabinoid receptor agonist

        Oscar Alberto López-Canales,Natalia Pavón,Laura Matilde Ubaldo-Reyes,Marco Antonio Juárez-Oropeza,Patricia Victoria Torres-Durán,Ignacio Regla,María Cristina Paredes-Carbajal 대한약리학회 2022 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.26 No.2

The effect of PHAR-DBH-Me, a cannabinoid receptor agonist, on different cardiovascular responses in adult male rats was analyzed. The blood pressure was measured directly and indirectly. The coronary flow was measured by Langendorff preparation, and vasomotor responses induced by PHAR-DBH-Me in aortic rings precontracted with phenylephrine (PHEN) were analyzed. The intravenous injection of the compound PHAR-DBH-Me (0.018–185 μg/kg) resulted in decreased blood pressure; maximum effect was observed at the dose of 1,850 μg/kg. A concentrationdependent increase in the coronary flow was observed in a Langendorff preparation. In the aortic rings, with and without endothelium, pre-contracted with PHEN (10–6 M), the addition of PHAR-DBH-Me to the superfusion solution (10–12–10–5 M), produced a vasodilator response, which depends on the concentration and presence of the endothelium. L-NAME inhibited these effects. Addition of CB1 receptor antagonist (AM 251) did not modify the response, while CB2 receptor antagonist (AM630) decreased the potency of relaxation elicited by PHAR-DBH-Me. Indomethacin shifted the curve concentration-response to the left and produced an increase in the magnitude of the maximum endothelium dependent response to this compound. The maximum effect of PHAR-DBH-Me was observed with the concentration of 10–5 M. These results show that PHAR-DBH-Me has a concentration-dependent and endothelium-dependent vasodilator effect through CB2 receptor. This vasodilation is probably mediated by the synthesis/release of NO. On the other hand, it is suggested that PHAR-DBH-Me also induces the release of a vasoconstrictor prostanoid.

The Rare and Challenging Presentation of Gastric Cancer during Pregnancy: A Report of Three Cases

        Pacheco, Sergio,Norero, Enrique,Canales, Claudio,Martinez, Jose Miguel,Herrera, Maria Elisa,Munoz, Carolina,Jarufe, Nicolas The Korean Gastric Cancer Association 2016 Journal of gastric cancer Vol.16 No.4

Pregnancy-associated gastric cancer is extremely rare. In many cases, it is diagnosed at an advanced stage because the symptoms during pregnancy are generally overlooked. We report three cases of gastric cancer during pregnancy with various outcomes. The first case included a patient with stage IV gastric cancer who received palliative chemotherapy. This patient had a preterm birth and died 7 months after diagnosis. The second case received neoadjuvant chemotherapy during pregnancy and a total gastrectomy was performed after delivery. She then received adjuvant chemoradiotherapy. This patient developed pulmonary metastasis and died of recurrence 41 months after surgery. In the third case, a distal subtotal gastrectomy was performed at week 14 of pregnancy, with no complications. The patient received adjuvant chemoradiotherapy. She is currently without recurrence 14 months after surgery. In patients with pregnancy-associated gastric cancer, treatment decisions are predominantly influenced by clinical stage and gestational age at diagnosis.
