Background/Purpose: Hamstring tendon autografts are commonly used for double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (DB-ACLR). If the volume of the semitendinosus (ST) tendon is insufficient, the gracilis (G) tendon is also harvested. Additional harvesting of the G autograft can affect patients’ short-term postoperative outcome, such as muscle recovery; thus, preoperative information about whether an additional G autograft is needed would be useful. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether preoperative measurement of the ST tendon using ultrasonography could inform the intraoperative decision to harvest the G tendon. Methods: We enrolled 20 patients (13 men and seven women) who underwent DB-ACLR between October 2017 and March 2019. The mean patient age was 28.5 years. The ipsilateral ST tendon was measured using ultrasonography before surgery. Measurements included the diameter and breadth of the short-axis image. The cross-sectional area (CSA) was calculated from these measurements. During surgery, when two grafts with diameters of ≥ 5.0mm could not be made, the G tendon was also harvested. Patients were categorized into two groups: the ST group where only the ST tendon was harvested, and the semitendinosus gracilis tendon (STG) group where the ST and G tendons were both harvested. The CSA value was compared between the two groups, and the cutoff value was calculated. Results: In the ST group (n = 8), the mean diameter and breadth of the semitendinosus tendon were 4.21 and 2.34mm, respectively. In the STG group (n = 12), the mean diameter and breadth of the ST tendon were 3.39 and 1.78 mm, respectively. The CSAs calculated for the ST group and the STG group were 7.74mm2 and 4.79mm2, respectively. A cutoff value of 7.0mm2 was found to correspond to a specificity and sensitivity to harvest the G tendon of 87.5% and 75.0%, respectively. Conclusions: The preoperative CSA of the ST tendon determined using ultrasonography can, therefore, be informative for deciding whether to harvest the G tendon for DB-ACLR. The results of this study provide valuable information for graft selection in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Purpose: There are concerns that malalignment in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) occurs with less experienced surgeons. This study investigates the influence of surgical experience on TKA outcomes. Materials and methods: Nineteen patients (38 knees) who underwent bilateral TKA between 2011 and 2015 were included. A supervisor performed knee replacements associated with lower Knee Society Scores (KSS); trainee surgeons operated on the other knee. Knees were categorized into two groups: operations by the supervisor (group S) versus operations by trainee surgeons (group T). Range of motion (ROM), KSS, operative time, hip–knee–ankle angle, and femoral and tibial component angle were evaluated. Results: The mean operative time was 92.5 min in group S and 124.2 min in group T (p < 0.01). The mean postoperative maximal flexion was 113.2° in group S and 114.2° in group T (not significant). The mean postoperative KSS was 92.9 in group S and 93.9 in group T (not significant). No significant differences between groups in terms of proportion of inliers for the hip–knee–ankle angle, femoral component angle, or tibial component angle were observed. Conclusions: Although operative time was significantly longer for trainee surgeons versus the supervisor, no significant differences in ROM, KSS, or component positioning between supervisor and trainee surgeons were observed.

The extragalactic background suggests half the energy generated by stars was reprocessed into the infrared (IR) by dust. At z$\sim$1.3, 90\% of star formation is obscured by dust. To fully understand the cosmic star formation history, it is critical to investigate infrared emission. AKARI has made deep mid-IR observation using its continuous 9-band filters in the NEP field (5.4 deg$^2$), using $\sim$10\% of the entire pointed observations available throughout its lifetime. However, there remain 11,000 AKARI infrared sources undetected with the previous CFHT/Megacam imaging ($r\sim$25.9ABmag). Redshift and IR luminosity of these sources are unknown. These sources may contribute significantly to the cosmic star-formation rate density (CSFRD). For example, if they all lie at 1$<z<$2, the CSFRD will be twice as high at the epoch. We are carrying out deep imaging of the NEP field in 5 broad bands ($g,r,i,z,$ and $y$) using Hyper Suprime-Camera (HSC), which has 1.5 deg field of view in diameter on Subaru 8m telescope. This will provide photometric redshift information, and thereby IR luminosity for the previously-undetected 11,000 faint AKARI IR sources. Combined with AKARI's mid-IR AGN/SF diagnosis, and accurate mid-IR luminosity measurement, this will allow a complete census of cosmic star-formation/AGN accretion history obscured by dust.

There exists strong evidence supporting the co-evolution of central supermassive black holesand their host galaxies; however it is still under debate how such a relation comes about and whether itis relevant for all or only a subset of galaxies. An important mechanism connecting AGN to their hostgalaxies is AGN feedback, potentially heating up or even expelling gas from galaxies. AGN feedbackmay hence be responsible for the eventual quenching of star formation and halting of galaxy growth. Arich multi-wavelength dataset ranging from the X-ray regime (\textit{Chandra}), to far-IR (\textit{Herschel}), and radio(\textit{WSRT}) is available for the North Ecliptic Pole field, most notably surveyed by the \textit{AKARI} infraredspace telescope, covering a total area on the sky of 5.4 sq. degrees. We investigate the star formationproperties and possible signatures of radio feedback mechanisms in the host galaxies of 237 radiosources below redshift z = 2 and at a radio 1.4 GHz flux density limit of 0.1 mJy. Using broadbandSED modelling, the nuclear and host galaxy components of these sources are studied simultaneously as a function of their radio luminosity. Here we present results concerning the AGN content of the radio sources in this field, while also offering evidence showcasing a link between AGN activity and host galaxy star formation. In particular, we show results supporting a maintenance type of feedback from powerful radio-jets.
