These studies were carried out to develop the low salt-fermented sea foods from ascidian. In present papers, we examined optimum processing conditions and quality improvement of the low salt-fermented ascidian. The optimum processing conditions of low salt-fermented ascidian was as followed. After deshelling and slicing a ascidian muscle in 5 mm width, and dipping in a 10% salt and 1% sodium erythorbate solution for 20 min. We dewatered it, and dipped it in 0.1% sodium bisulfite solution for 1 min, then added an anchovy sauce and rice gruel(1:1) mixture and finally fermented it at 5℃ for 15 days. The moisture and salinity contents of the low salt-fermented ascidian were 75.0~75.4% and 8.0 ~8.5%, respectively. During fermention at 5℃ for 20 days, amino-N contents of the low salt-fermented ascidian increased, and texture were softened gradually. The viable cell counts were 4.2~4.5×10^(4) CFU/g, and tended to decrease in the first stage during fermentation. The ratio of saturated fatty acids tended to increase in the early stage of fermentation, while that of polyunsaturated fatty acids decreased slightly during fermentation. In the results of chemical experiments and sensory evaluation, dipping treatment in 1% sodium erythorbate solution and 0.1% sodium bisulfite solution showed a good color and prevention of browning in the low salt-fermented ascidian, and also adding anchovy sauce and rice gruel mixture improved the taste of it.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Appropriate pain assessment is very important for managing cancer pain. This study was designed to evaluate the utility of the Korean Cancer Pain Assessment Tool (KCPAT) by assessing changes in the management of cancer pain. The changes in pain intensity, the pattern of drug prescriptions, and the patients' satisfaction with pain control were analyzed after using the KCPAT. The results indicated that pain medicine prescriptions were changed in 194 (51.5%) cases after using the KCPAT, and 69.5% of these changes were affected by the KCPAT. After using the KCPAT, pain intensity as assessed by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS, 0–10cm) decreased (4.31±2.35 vs. 3.60±2.45, <I>P</I><0.0001), and the presence of associated symptoms and psychosocial items was significantly reduced. The patients' satisfaction with pain control was improved. Forty-four physicians (89.8%) thought that the KCPAT was useful. The KCPAT improved patients' satisfaction with pain control and was a useful tool for evaluating and managing cancer pain.</P>

The effects of n-alkanols on the rotational relaxation time of 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) were investigated in the liposomes of total lipids (SPMVTL) extracted from synaptosomal plasma membrane vesicles. n-Alkanols decreased the rotational relaxation time of DPH in the SPMVTL, and the potencies of n-alkanols up to 1-nonanol increased by 1 order of magnitude as the carbon chain length increased by two carbon atoms. The cut-off phenomenon was reached at 1-decanol, where further increase in hydrocarbon length resulted in an increase in the rotational relaxation time of DPH.

Inhibitory effect of L. leptolepis fallen leaf extracts on the germination of Pinus densiflora, × Pinus rigitaeda, Pinus rigida, Pinus thunbergii and Larix leptolepis was investigated. Germination of those seeds in culture room and in pot at field showed the highly significant inhibitory effects by the aqueous extracts from L. leptolepis fallen leaves. Among them L. leptolepis was the most severely inhibited by the aqueous extracts used. To identify allelopathic substances, thin-layer chromatography was employed. Gallic, ferulic, t-cinnamic and vanillic acids were identified from fallen leaves of L. leptolepis. From the results, it is assumed that autotoxicity of L . leptolepis may act as inhibitory factors on germination of the species in natural stands.

It is very important to monitor the spread of spilled oil for effective response planning. However, the use of traditional response ship or other response equipment for this purpose under wild sea condition such as high wave, fast tide and wind is limited because of physical fatigue and stress of crews. Therefore, the development of an unmanned pollution response vehicle which can monitor the spread of spilled oil under wild sea condition is needed. In this paper, we report the construction of remote control system for super mini-size unmanned pollution response vehicles which consists of RF controller and a GUI-based control consol.<br/> <br/>
