A Theoretical Investigation on the Generation of Strength in Staple Yarns

Ghosh Anindya The Korean Fiber Society 2006 Fibers and polymers Vol.7 No.3

In this article, an attempt has been made to explain the failure mechanism of spun yams. The mechanism includes the aspects of generation and distribution of forces on a fibre under the tensile loading of a yam, the free body diagram of forces, the conditions for gripping and slipping of a fibre, and the initiation, propagation, and ultimate yam rupture in its weakest link. A simple mathematical model for the tenacity of spun yams has been proposed. The model is based on the translation of fibre bundle tenacity into the yam tenacity.

Antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities of Cleome rutidosperma

        Anindya Bose,Sumanta Mondal,Jayanta Kumar Gupta,Tirtha Ghosh,Debabrata Debbhuti,Sudam Si 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2008 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.8 No.2

The study was aimed at evaluating the antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities of ethanolic extract and its fractions of Cleome rutidosperma. The antioxidant activity, reducing power, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, superoxide anion scavenging activity, nitric oxide anion scavenging activity, in vitro antilipid peroxidation activity and in vitro nonenzymatic hemoglobin glycosylation were studied. The results obtained in the study indicate that Cleome rutidosperma is a potential source of natural antioxidant. All the parameters were found to be concentration dependent and increased with increasing amounts of sample. Flavonoids, phenolic compound like tannins, terpenoids may be responsible for the antioxidant activity of the plant. Variation of solubility parameters in various models may be attributed to non-linearity of activity of ethanol extract fractions models. Further investigation on the isolation and identification of antioxidant component(s) in the plant may lead to chemical entities with potential for clinical use. • Effect of various fractions of Bacopa monnieri Linn. aerial parts on ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity in rats

Ghosh, Tirtha,Maity, Tapan Kumar,Dash, Deepak Kumar,Bose, Anindya Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Research Center 2007 Oriental pharmacy and experimental medicine Vol.7 No.3

The ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) and n-butanol fraction (NBF) of ethanolic extract of Bacopa monnieri aerial parts were screened for hepatoprotective activity and in vivo antioxidant activity on ethanol-induced hepatotoxic rats. Ethyl acetate fraction was found to be more potent even though both the fractions were endowed with significant hepatoprotective activity. EAF and NBF were investigated for hepatoprotective activity in albino rats at 300 mg/kg, p.o. dose and compared with standard drug Silymarin (25 mg/kg, p.o.). Results show that both the fractions were effective in blunting ethanol-induced enhanced activities of serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, level of serum bilirubin (both total and direct), liver weight loss and was also effective in reducing ethanol-induced lipid peroxidation both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, the fractions could also enhance ethanol-induced suppressed activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and decreased level of reduced glutathione. Results of hepatocellular damage caused by ethanol and its recovery by EAF and NBF, suggest that they might be considered as a potential source of natural hepatoprotective agents, which could be related to the free radical scavenging properties of saponins present in high concentration in the fractions.

      • A study on wound healing activity of Bacopa monnieri Linn. aerial parts

Ghosh, Tirtha,Maity, Tapan Kumar,Dash, Deepak Kumar,Boss, Anindya Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Research Center 2007 Oriental pharmacy and experimental medicine Vol.7 No.2

Bacopa monnieri is being used in the traditional system of medicine for a variety of ailments. In the present study, the ethanolic extract of Bacopa monnieri aerial parts has been studied for its wound healing activity using various models in rats. Significant increase in wound contraction and skin breaking strength were observed in the excision and incision wound models respectively. There was also significant increase in hydroxyproline content, DNA content, superoxide dismutase activity, catalase activity, glutathione level and decrease in the level of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in the $12^{th}$ day post wounding tissue of experimental rats in the ethanol extract treated groups with respect to the control group. The effect of the extract was found to be comparable with the standard drug nitrofurazone. From the results it may be concluded that the plant Bacopa monnieri is endowed with significant wound healing activity, thereby justifying its use in the traditional medicine. Saponins may be responsible for the observed wound healing activity.

Hepatoprotective Activity of Ethanolic Extract of Bacopa monnieri Linn. AerialParts Against CCl4-induced Hepatotoxicity in Rats

        Tirtha Ghosh,Tapan Kumar Maity,Gouri Kumar Dash,Anindya Bose,Siva Sankar Nayak,Deepak Kumar Dash 한국생약학회 2007 Natural Product Sciences Vol.13 No.1

ethanolic extract of Bacopa monnieri Linn. aerial parts were studied for its hepatoprotective efecton CCl4-induced hepatotoxic rats. The extract was found to decrease significantly CCl4-induced elevation ofSGOT, SGPT, ALP, bilirubin and total cholesterol. But, it increased HDL-cholesterol level and liver weight withrespect to CCl4 toxic rats. The extract was also found to decrease significantly the CCl4-induced elevation of lipidperoxidation and increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT) and GSH level in the liver ofextract treated rats when compared with CCl4 induced rats. Histopathological profiles showed that the extract hadsignificant protective effect against CCl4may be possible that the mechanism of hepatoprotection of the extract is due to its antioxidant effect.KeywordsBacopa monnieri L., ethanolic extract, hepatoprotective activity, antioxidant activity, histopathology.

Investigation of Inter Fiber Cohesion in Yarns. II. Influence of Fiber and Process Parameters on the Cohesion in Man Made and Blended Yarns

        Gokarneshan N.,Ghosh Anindya,Anbumani N.,Subramaniam V. The Korean Fiber Society 2006 Fibers and polymers Vol.7 No.1

This paper discusses the inter fiber cohesion in man made and blended yarns. The fiber parameters such as fiber length and fineness influence the cohesion. Studies have been focused on polyester and viscose spun yarns. Though polyester and viscose yarns show similar trend in cohesion, viscose yarns exhibit better cohesion clue to their serrated cross section. Studies on the effect of blend proportion of polyester cotton and polyester viscose yarns reveal that increase of polyester and viscose in the respective blends improve the inter fiber cohesion.

Investigation of Inter Fiber Cohesion in Yarns. I. Influence of Certain Spinning Parameters on the Cohesion in Cotton Yarns

        Gokarneshan N.,Ghosh Anindya,Anbumani N.,Subramaniam V. The Korean Fiber Society 2005 Fibers and polymers Vol.6 No.4

This paper investigates the influence of raw material and process parameters in spinning that affect the inter fiber cohesion in yams. An instrument has been developed for measuring the minimum twist of cohesion. With regard to the raw material parameters, the influence of different cotton fiber mixings for a given count of yarn is investigated. Also the effect of spinning to varying counts for a given cotton variety is studied. With regard to the process parameters, studies have been carried out to investigate the influence of noil extraction in comber, number of draw frame passages, draft pressure in ring frame and direction of twist. Cohesion improved with increase in the noil extraction percentage in the comber. Increase in the number of draw frame passages also improved the cohesion. Draft pressure in ring frame improved the fiber cohesion in yarn up to a pressure of $2.1kg/cm^2$. Direction of twist had no effect on the cohesion.
