Previous evidence supports the important role that oxidative stress (OxS) plays in metabolic syndrome (MetS)-related manifestations. We determined the relationship between the number of MetS components and the degree of OxS in MetS patients. In this comparative cross-sectional study from the LIPGENE cohort, a total of 91 MetS patients (43 men and 48women; aged between 45 and 68 years) were divided into four groups based on the number of MetS components: subjects with 2, 3, 4 and 5 MetS components (n¼20, 31, 28 and 12, respectively). We measured ischemic reactive hyperemia (IRH),plasma levels of soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1), total nitrite, lipid peroxidation products (LPO), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) plasma activities. sVCAM-1, H2O2 and LPO levels were lower in subjects with 2 or 3 MetS components than subjects with 4 or 5 MetS components. IRH and total nitrite levels were higher in subjects with 2 or 3 MetS components than subjects with 4 or 5 MetS components. SOD and GPx activities were lower in subjects with 2 MetS components than subjects with 4 or 5 MetS components. Waist circumference, weight, age, homeostatic model assessment-b, triglycerides (TGs), high-density lipoprotein and sVCAM-1 levels were significantly correlated with SOD activity. MetS subjects with more MetS components may have a higher OxS level. Furthermore, association between SOD activity and MetS components may indicate that this variable could be the most relevant OxS biomarker in patients suffering from MetS and could be used as a predictive tool to determine the degree of the underlying OxS in MetS.
A Novel Approach to Trojan Horse Detection in Mobile Phones Messaging and Bluetooth Services

A method to detect Trojan horses in messaging and Bluetooth in mobile phones by means of monitoring the events produced by the infections is presented in this paper. The structure of the detection approach is split into two modules: the first is the Monitoring module which controls connection requests and sent/received files, and the second is the Graphical User module which shows messages and, under suspicious situations, reports the user about a possible malware. Prototypes have been implemented on different mobile operating systems to test its feasibility on real cellphone malware. Experimental results are shown to be promising since this approach effectively detects various known malware.

Currently, greater environmental awareness promotes research and development advances in biodegradable materials; they represent an alternative that decreases the environmental impact caused by traditional synthetic plastics. This study consists of the development and characterization of thermoplastic corn starch-based composites, reinforced with barley straw particles made by thermal compression. The study materials were prepared by using three particle concentrations (5, 10, and 15 %), while the matrix (0 %) was used as a reference. A mechanical evaluation of all samples was carried out, as well as that of their water absorption properties. They were also characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and flammability tests. The inclusion of straw in the thermoplastic matrix increased water absorption and quickened carbon formation, although it also increased its tensile strength (7 MPa) and the Young’s modulus of activity (MOE) (420 MPa) with a 15 % reinforcement. The FTIR analysis highlights the presence of a carbonyl signal (1720 cm-1) caused by a thermal breakdown (caramelization) linked to barley particles. Moreover, X-ray diffraction demonstrated a VA-type crystallinity pattern (anhydrous) within the biocomposites and an increase of the crystallinity index, through incorporating barley particles in the thermoplastic corn starch-based matrix.

Obesity is characterized by an increase in the infiltration of monocytes into the adipose tissue, causing an inflammatory condition associated with, for example, the development of insulin resistance. Thus, anti-inflammatory-based treatments could emerge as a novel and interesting approach. It has been reported that Chilean native fruits maqui (Aristotelia chilensis) and calafate (Berberis microphylla) present high contents of polyphenols, which are known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of extracts of these fruits to block the pathogenic interaction between adipocytes and macrophages in vitro and to compare its effect with blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) extract treatment, which has been already described to possess several biomedical benefits. RAW264.7 macrophages were treated with 5 μg/mL lipopolysaccharides (LPS), with conditioned media (CM) from fully differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes, or in a coculture (CC) with 3T3-L1 adipocytes, in the presence or absence of 100 μM [total polyphenolic content] of each extract for 24 h. The gene expression and secretion profile of several inflammatory markers were evaluated. Nitric oxide secretion induced by LPS, CM, and CC was reduced by the presence of maqui (- 12.2%, - 45.6%, and - 14.7%, respectively) and calafate (- 27.6%, - 43.9%, and - 11.8%, respectively) extracts. Gene expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and TNF-α was inhibited and of IL-10 was induced by maqui and calafate extract incubation. In conclusion, the extracts of these fruits present important inhibitory-like features over the inflammatory response of the interaction between adipocytes and macrophages, comprising a potential therapeutic tool against comorbidities associated with obesity development.
