Effects of the NQO1 609C>T Polymorphism on Leukemia Susceptibility: Evidence from a Meta-analysis

A functional polymorphism in the NQO1 gene, featuring a 609C>T substitution,leading to proline to serine amino-acid and enzyme activity changes, has been implicated in cancer risk. However, individually published investigations showed inconclusive results, especially for leukemia. In this study, we therefore performed a meta-analysis of 21 publications with a total of 3,634 cases and 4,827controls, mainly for leukemia. We summarized the data on the association between the NQO1 609C>T polymorphism and risk of leukemia and performed subgroup analyses by ethnicity and leukemia type. We found that the variant TT homozygous genotype o was associated with a modestly increased risk of leukemia (TT versus CT/CC: OR=1.23, 95%CI=1.00-1.51, heterogeneity=0.76; $I^2$=0%). Following further stratified analyses, increased risk was only observed in subgroups of Caucasians. This meta-analysis suggests that the NQO1 609T allele is a high-penetrance risk factor for leukemia in Caucasians. The effect on leukemia may be modified by ethnicity and leukemia type, and the small sample sizes of the subgroup analyses suggest that further larger studies are needed.
Glacier Change in the Yigong Zangbo Basin, Tibetan Plateau, China

Distinguishing debris-covered glaciers from debris-free glaciers is difficult when using only optical remote sensing images to extract glacier boundaries. According to the features that the surface temperature of debriscovered glacier is lower than surrounding objects, and higher than clean glaciers, glacial changes in the Yigong Zangbo basin was analyzed on the basis of visible, near-infrared and thermal-infrared band images of Landsat TM and OLI/TIRS in the support of ancillary digital elevation model (DEM). The results indicated that glacier area gradually declined from 928.76 km2 in 1990 to 918.46 km2 in 2000 and 901.51 km2 in 2015. However, debriscovered glacier area showed a slight increase from 63.39 km2 in 1990 to 66.24 km2 in 2000 and 71.16 km2 in 2015. During 25 years, the glacier length became shorter continuously with terminus elevation rising up. The area of moraine lakes in 1990 was 1.43 km2, which increased to 1.98 km2 in 2000 and 3.41 km2 in 2015. In other words, the total area of the moraine lakes in 2015 is 2.38 times of that in 1990. This increase in moraine lake area could be the result of accelerated glacier melt and retreat, which is consistent with the significant warming trend in recent decades in the basin.
Progressive collapse analysis of steel frame structure based on the energy principle

The progressive collapse potential of steel moment framed structures due to abrupt removal of a column is investigated based on the energy principle. Based on the changes of component's internal energy, this paper analyzes structural member's sensitivity to abrupt removal of a column to determine a sub-structure resisting progressive collapse. An energy-based structural damage index is defined to judge whether progressive collapse occurs in a structure. Then, a simplified beam damage model is proposed to analyze the energies absorbed and dissipated by structural beams at large deflections, and a simplified modified plastic hinges model is developed to consider catenary action in beams. In addition, the correlation between bending moment and axial force in a beam during the whole deformation development process is analyzed and modified, which shows good agreement with the experimental results.
2D-2D heterostructured composites Bi4O5Br2-SnS2 with boosted photocatalytic NOx abatement

A desirable photocatalytic system ought to feature efficient NOx removal and retardance of toxic NO2 generation. In this investigation, a series of novel two-denominational (2D)-2D composites Bi4O5Br2-SnS2 (XBS) were successfully fabricated through a simple mechanical ball-milling route and characterized systematically. The coexistence of both expected components was confirmed. 2D morphologies of both componentswere stacked in face-to-face manner and thus formed heterojunction structures, verified by SEMand TEM patterns. The visible-light absorption was enhanced in composites caused by the shrinkage ofband gaps. With microstructural and optical merits, these binary composites showed reinforced photocatalyticabatement of NOx and attenuated generation of toxic NO2 under visible light, compared withbare Bi4O5Br2. Successive recycling catalytic experiments revealed the satisfactory reusability and structuralstability of achieved composites. Ultimately, a reasonable type-II model was deduced to describe themigration and transfer of interface carriers based on experimental and analytical results. Such workdesigned and provided various bismuth-based composites constructed by the simple mechanical ballmillingfor controlling and treating nitrogen oxides at ppb level in the atmospheric environment.

Novel $CO_2$-soluble 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) chelating agents were synthesized and evaluated for solubility and metal ion extraction ability in supercritical $CO_2\;(Sc-CO_2)$. Among them, secondary amide-containing 8- HQ derivatives cannot be dispersed well into Sc-$CO_2$, but tertiary amide-containing derivatives can dissolve completely in Sc-$CO_2$ even at low CO2 pressures, perhaps owing to the predominant intermolecular interaction between the chelating agent and the $CO_2$ molecule. Based on 8-HQ chelating agent solubility data, we investigated the extraction of metal ions ($Co^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Sr^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, and $Zn^{2+}$) using two highly $CO_2$-soluble 8-HQ derivatives (4d, 4e) in Sc-$CO_2$. The extraction efficiency of tertiary amide-containing 8-HQ ligands, both fluorinated and non-fluorinated forms, was dramatically increased in the presence of diethyl amine (organic base). We suggest that diethyl amine could play an important synergistic role in the stronger metal binding ability of 8-HQ through an in situ deprotonation reaction in Sc-$CO_2$ medium.
