Effects of Temperature and Ethylene Response Inhibitors on Growth and Flowering of Passion Fruit

        Fang-Yin Liu,Yung-Liang Peng,Yu-Sen Chang 한국원예학회 2015 원예과학기술지 Vol.33 No.3

This study examined the effects of different day/night temperature regimes or silver ion on growth and flowering of passion fruit ‘Tai-nung No.1’. Low temperature treatment (20/15℃) caused passion fruit cultivar ‘Tai-nung No.1’ to fail to flower. Flowering induction occurred within a temperature range of 20-30℃, with no significant difference in the days to first flower bud and the total number of flower buds between plants grown at 30/25℃ and 25/20℃. However, plants grown at 30/25℃ exhibited their first flower buds set on the higher nodes and had higher abortion rates of flower buds than those at 25/20℃. Plants grown at 30/25℃ had the most rapid growth and the shortest plastochron. We also evaluated the effect of the ethylene response inhibitors silver nitrate (AgNO₃) and silver thiosulfate (STS) on growth and flowering of potted passion fruit ‘Tai-nung No.1’, when they were exposed to low temperature conditions (20/15℃) following chemical treatments (AgNO₃ or STS, at 0.5 or 1.0 mM). AgNO₃ and STS treatments induced flower formation and initial flower bud formation within approximately two weeks at 20/15℃ whereas non-treated control plants exhibited no flower formation. ACC content and activity of ACC oxidase in the leaves of passion fruit ‘Tai-nung No.1’exposed to low temperature conditions (20/15℃) were significantly inhibited by the ethylene inhibitor treatments. These results indicate that ethylene, which is produced under low temperature conditions, plays an important role in inhibiting flower formation in passion fruit.

Growth Regulators Prolong Bract Longevity of Potted Bougainvillea

        Fang-Yin Liu,Yu-Sen Chang 한국원예학회 2011 원예과학기술지 Vol.29 No.4

When bougainvilleas are subjected to indoor low-light conditions, flower bracts regularly abscise. This study elucidates the effects of plant growth regulators on bract longevity of potted bougainvillea. Potted ‘Taipei Red’ bougainvillea in four different bract development stages were treated with 1-MCP (1-methylcyclopropene), NAA (1-naphthaleneacetic acid), SNA (sodium salt of naphthaleneacetic acid), IBA (indolebutyric acid), BA (6-benzylaminopurine), KH₂PO₄ (potassium dihydrogen phosphate), Put (diamine putrescine), SA (salicylic acid), or STS (silver thiosulfate) and were moved to indoor low-light conditions after treatments. Experimental results indicate that 1-MCP, NAA, SNA, BA, Put, and SA prolonged bract longevity, and this effect increased as bract stage increased. The effect of STS was significant in early bract stages and decreased as bract stages increased. Additionally, 1-MCP, NAA, SNA, BA, Put, SA, and STS treatment significantly reduced endogenous ACC (1-aminocyclopropene-1-carboxylate) content and ACC oxidase activity, suggesting that the inhibition of ethylene production was achieved via physiological metabolism. However, treatment with IBA or KH₂PO₄ had no effect on the bract longevity at any stage. In the combined chemical treatments, NAA + STS or NAA + SA were effectively for prolonging bract longevity and contained less protein or chlorophyll degradation, decrease ACC oxidase or ethylene production than the control. In conclusion, we propose that combined chemical treatment significantly prolonged the bract longevity and more effectively than single chemical treatment at any stage.

ON POSITIVE DEFINITE SOLUTIONS OF A CLASS OF NONLINEAR MATRIX EQUATION

        Fang, Liang,Liu, San-Yang,Yin, Xiao-Yan Korean Mathematical Society 2018 대한수학회보 Vol.55 No.2

This paper is concerned with the positive definite solutions of the nonlinear matrix equation $X-A^*{\bar{X}}^{-1}A=Q$, where A, Q are given complex matrices with Q positive definite. We show that such a matrix equation always has a unique positive definite solution and if A is nonsingular, it also has a unique negative definite solution. Moreover, based on Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury formula, we derive elegant relationships between solutions of $X-A^*{\bar{X}}^{-1}A=I$ and the well-studied standard nonlinear matrix equation $Y+B^*Y^{-1}B=Q$, where B, Q are uniquely determined by A. Then several effective numerical algorithms for the unique positive definite solution of $X-A^*{\bar{X}}^{-1}A=Q$ with linear or quadratic convergence rate such as inverse-free fixed-point iteration, structure-preserving doubling algorithm, Newton algorithm are proposed. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of all the theoretical results and the behavior of the considered algorithms.

RhGLP-1 (7-36) protects diabetic rats against cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury via up-regulating expression of Nrf2/HO-1 and increasing the activities of SOD

        Fang, Yi,Liu, Xiaofang,Zhao, Libo,Wei, Zhongna,Jiang, Daoli,Shao, Hua,Zang, Yannan,Xu, Jia,Wang, Qian,Liu, Yang,Peng, Ye,Yin, Xiaoxing The Korean Society of Pharmacology 2017 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.21 No.5

The present study aimed to explore the neuroprotective effect and possible mechanisms of rhGLP-1 (7-36) against transient ischemia/reperfusion injuries induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in type 2 diabetic rats. First, diabetic rats were established by a combination of a high-fat diet and low-dose streptozotocin (STZ) (30 mg/kg, intraperitoneally). Second, they were subjected to MCAO for 2 h, then treated with rhGLP-1 (7-36) (10, 20, $40{\mu}g/kg$ i.p.) at the same time of reperfusion. In the following 3 days, they were injected with rhGLP-1 (7-36) at the same dose and route for three times each day. After 72 h, hypoglycemic effects were assessed by blood glucose changes, and neuroprotective effects were evaluated by neurological deficits, infarct volume and histomorphology. Mechanisms were investigated by detecting the distribution and expression of the nuclear factor erythroid-derived factor 2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) in ischemic brain tissue, the levels of phospho-PI3 kinase (PI3K)/PI3K ratio and heme-oxygenase-1 (HO-l), as well as the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA). Our results showed that rhGLP-1 (7-36) significantly reduced blood glucose and infarction volume, alleviated neurological deficits, enhanced the density of surviving neurons and vascular proliferation. The nuclear positive cells ratio and expression of Nrf2, the levels of P-PI3K/PI3K ratio and HO-l increased, the activities of SOD increased and the contents of MDA decreased. The current results indicated the protective effect of rhGLP-1 (7-36) in diabetic rats following MCAO/R that may be concerned with reducing blood glucose, up-regulating expression of Nrf2/HO-1 and increasing the activities of SOD.

Comparative transcriptome analysis to identify genes involved in terpenoid biosynthesis in Agriophyllum squarrosum, a folk medicinal herb native to Asian temperature deserts

        Yin Xiaoyue,Yan-Xia Liu,Qian Chaoju,Zhou Shanshan,Fang Tingzhou,Fan Xingke,Gao yuan,Chang Yuxiao,Yang Jian,Ma Xiao-Fei 한국식물생명공학회 2021 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.15 No.3

Agriophyllum squarrosum is a folk Mongolian medicine with pleiotropic pharmacological and ecological economic importance endemic to Asian temperature deserts. Terpenoids play critical roles in biotic and abiotic stresses due to their antioxidative activities. Based on non-targeted metabolomic analysis, we detected eight terpenoids enriched in the above-ground tissues of A. squarrosum, however, the molecular mechanism underlying terpenoids biosynthesis in this desert medicinal plant is rarely understood. Here, a comparative transcriptome analysis of diferent tissues in A. squarrosum was conducted to identify 84 unigenes encoding key enzymes in the upstream backbone biosynthesis and 53 unigenes encoding the downstream enzymes for terpenoid diversifcation. Most of the upstream genes exhibited signifcant high expression levels in leaf, and some of which were validated by qRT-PCR. Phylogenetic analysis showed that two downstream gene families OSCs (oxidosqualene cyclases) and TPSs (mainly in terpene synthases -g subfamily) had undergone notable gene expansions in A. squarrosum comparing with the other Amaranthaceae plant species and Arabidopsis. Nevertheless, most members from these two gene families showed the tissue-specifc expression in A. squarrosum, which supported the diversifcation and tissue-specifc enrichment of terpenoids across above-ground tissues. Considering to the habitat characteristics of A. squarrosum, we proposed that the enrichment of terpenoids and the functional diversifcation of terpenoids biosynthesis enzymes were more or less involved into its adaptation to stressful environments of deserts. These results expand the available genetic information underlying terpenoid biosynthesis in A. squarrosum, and contribute to deeper researches on pharmaceutical and eco-agricultural applications in this desert medicinal plant.

      • Illumination Invariant Chinese Chessboard Reconstruction Based on Color Image

        Jianjun Fang,N.Kondo,Jiying Yin,Xiuhong Liu,Kexian Xiao 제어로봇시스템학회 2009 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2009 No.8

This paper introduces a new approach based on binarized Gabor filters and Hough transform to reconstruct Chinese chessboard by computation. Firstly, Gabor transform is performed directly on an original color image of chessboard to obtain Gabor filters in which only interested lines are kept by selecting appropriate parameters. Secondly, Gabor filters image is binarized and thinned and then lines are detected by Hough transform. Thirdly, a binarized Gabor filters’image is affine rectified and three parameters which dominate reconstruction of chessboard are measured and coordinates of any crossing points in the chessboard can be calculated based on priori information and measured data. Finally, experiments have been conducted to verify illumination invariant feature of proposed approach. Results reveal that this new approach is more robust to illumination change. Comparing to conventional method, it is obviously superior and has been applied in a robust machine vision system for Chinese chess playing robot.
