      • Situated Leadership : A New Community Leadership Model

        Falk, Ian 한국국제지역사회개발학회 2000 地域社會開發學術誌 Vol.10 No.2

Rural regional Australia is in crisis. This paper aims to provide first the background issues and forces impacting on the crisis. It then reviews the issues and challenges surrounding the crisis, and suggests the attributes for a radical but practical new model of Situated Leadership that can be drawn on as local communities organise themselves in the pursuit of sustainability.

      • Indicators of Social Capital : Social Capital as the Product of Local Interactive Learning Process

        Falk, Ian 한국국제지역사회개발학회 1998 地域社會開發學術誌 Vol.8 No.1

Social capital is provisionally defined as the networks, norms and trust which constitute the resources required for individuals, workplaces, groups, organisations and communities to strive for sustainable futures in a changing socio-economic environment. "Indicators of Social Capital" is an Australian pilot study whose purpose is to derive tentative indicators of social capital through a grounded theory approach, which in turn allows for subsequent refinement and testing. The study consists of an intensively analysed whole-community case study. The assumptions and issues considered in the project's development are explained, and the matter of definition, literature and possible uses of social capital are also discussed. The complex conceptual, definitional and methodological matters for the project are operationalised through the research question which is: "What is the nature of the interactive productivity between the local networks in a community?" Through answering this question, the research begins to address an area for inquiry which is both under-researched and in which there is a great deal of uncertainty.

Leakage of fluid around endotracheal tube cuffs: a cadaver study

        Falk Birkenfeld,Ralph Lucius,Kristian Ewald 대한마취통증의학회 2013 Korean Journal of Anesthesiology Vol.65 No.5

Background: The aim of the study was to evaluate the leakage of liquid past the cuffs of tracheal tubes in fresh frozen human heads. Methods: Six truncated fresh frozen heads were used and intubated with 8.0 mm endotracheal tubes. The intracuff pressures tested were 30 and 100 cmH2O. Subsequently, 20 ml of each of two oral antiseptic rinses (0.2% chlorhexidine and octenidine [octenidolⓇ, Schülke & Mayr GmbH, Norderstedt, Germany]) was applied for thirty seconds in the mouth. During the trial, leakage of the cuffs was examined. Results: The sealing between the tracheal cuff and tracheal wall was leakage-proof for all tested intracuff pressures and all tested antiseptic rinses. However, approximately 5.6 ml and 1.8 ml leaked into the esophagus and remained as a cuff-puddle, respectively. Conclusions: The sealing between an endotracheal tube cuff with an intracuff pressure of 30 cmH2O and the tracheal wall is leakage-proof during oral care with antiseptic rinsing. An increase of intracuff pressure to 100 cmH2O does not appear to be required.

Acne Inversa: Evaluating Antimicrobial Peptides and Proteins

        ( Falk G Bechara ),( Michael Sand ),( Marina Skrygan ),( Alexander Kreuter ),( Peter Altmeyer ),( Thilo Gambichler ) 대한피부과학회 2012 Annals of Dermatology Vol.24 No.4

Background: Acne inversa is a chronic, suppurative relapsing inflammatory skin disease that primarily affects the axillae, perineum and inframammary regions. Evidence suggests that the innate immune system is involved in the pathogenesis of acne inversa. Objective: To investigate the role of the innate immune system in acne inversa. Methods: Skin biopsies were obtained from inflammatory skin lesions (n=17) and from non-lesional skin (intraindividual control, n=17) of patients with acne inversa. Additional skin lesions were taken from patients with chronic venous leg ulcers (interindividual control, n=5). Quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was used to determine the mRNA levels of antimicrobial peptides and proteins (AMPs), including human β-defensin (hBD)-1, hBD-2 and hBD-3, LL-37 (cathelicidin) and Ribonuclease 7 (RNase 7). mRNA levels were also determined for inflammatory and anti- inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor- alpha (TNF-α), matrix metalloproteinase- 1 (MMP1), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8 and IL-10. Results: The mRNA levels of hBD-2, LL-37, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and MMP1 were significantly higher in acne inversa lesions compared to non-lesional skin (p<0.05). A significant positive correlation expression was observed between hBD-2 mRNA expression and LL-37 (ρ=0.53, p=0.03), and between hBD-2 and RNAse 7 (ρ=0.68, p=0.006). When compared to the chronic venous leg ulcer lesions, acne inversa lesions showed a significantly higher expression of RNase 7 mRNA, while IL-1 β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF- α and MMP1 mRNA expression was significantly higher in the chronic venous leg ulcer lesions (p<0.05). Conclusion: The AMP, cytokine milieu and tissue proteases in acne inversa lesions differ significantly from non-lesional skin and chronic venous leg ulcers. The positively correlating up-regulation of AMPs in acne inversa indicates an important role of the innate immune system in the pathogenesis of this disorder. (Ann Dermatol 24(4) 393∼397, 2012)

      • Planning and Reorganizing Quality Management Organizations -An Empirical Analysis of Current Practice

        ( Falk Behmer ),( Roland Jochem ),( Henry Hanke ) 한국품질경영학회 2015 한국품질경영학회 학술대회 Vol.2015 No.2

Purpose - Driven by globalization, manufacturing enterprises have faced strong international competition over the past decades. In order to successfully compete in a high cost environment, enterprises must be highly adaptable to increased market dynamics and customer expectations, as well as shortened product lifecycles. Environmental changes have an immediate effect on organizational structures, as their complexity grows with market complexity, making it more and more difficult to master the three basic organizational challenges: granting stability, efficiency, and flexibility to put strategy into practice. This results in an organizational problem for quality management, namely that in order to assure high quality products as a main competitive factor, quality management organization must be planned and implemented according to dynamic surrounding conditions. Thus, planning and implementing quality-related processes and organizational structures has developed into an essential managerial discipline. This p per presents challenges, motives and success factors of planning and reorganizing quality management organizations. It also gives an overview about involved stakeholder groups and tools to create a basis for improved planning practice. Methodology/Approach - This paper is based on an empirical study focused on quality management organization (QMO) -related planning activities and reorganization processes of manufacturing industry headquarters in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The authors conducted an online survey on this topic between November 20th and December 3rd, 2014. Personalized invitations were sent to respondents via email. Overall, 411 answers were collected. The survey primarily included questions with alternative or selectable answers and, where suitable, a five-stage Likert scale was additionally applied. The gathered data were analyzed with descriptive statistical methods and hypothesis testing. Findings - A long-term oriented, pro-active planning approach towards quality structures was found to have a significant impact on appropriate QMO capabilities. However, a gap was discovered between the valuated importance of long-term oriented planning and current corporate practice. Divisional QMO structures were found superior over functional or matrix structures in terms of capability, planning, and reorganization. Enterprises that aimed to improve product quality, as well as process quality, and to reduce interface were more successful in their QM reorganizations than those that aimed for cost cutting. The use of certain planning tools also increased success in this matter. Novel technologies and products as well as corporate growth were found to be the biggest challenges. Originality - Existing studies focus on general organizational structures. Due to the comparably high number of interfaces and strong product relation of QMO, planning and implementation activities pose a distinct challenge that requires specialized attention. Digitalization will increase the future number of reorganizations in manufacturing. As quality is one of the most important factors for contemporary entrepreneurial success, quality managers must be scientifically supported in order to close the gap between the importance of long-term planning and current practice. This paper contributes with an in-depth analysis.

      • THE SHAPE OF MONEY - HOW INNOVATIVE PAYMENT METHODS IN SERVICES CAN INFLUENCE THE OVERALL STORE PRICE IMAGE

        Tomas Falk,Alexander J. Mrozek,Werner H. Kunz,Jeroen J.L. Schepers 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2014 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2014 No.3

Prior research has investigated the consumer effects of cash and card payments in service settings, but the growing trend of innovative payment with a mobile device hasn’t been considered in the literature so fare. This article represents one of the first studies that considers the adoption of mobile as a new payment method and investigate how the ‘checkout’ phase affect the shoppers’ overall price image of retail stores (OSPI). Results from our studies show that the ‘checkout’ phase is the ‘moment of truth’ for shoppers judging OSPI. We investigate the effects of cash, card, and mobile payments and show that the less transparent a payment method, the lower OSPI judgments of shoppers. In particular, favorable comparisons of basket prices to shoppers’ mental budgets trigger lower store price perceptions. Subsequently, these results have major implications for retailers aiming to lower their OSPI in customers’ minds.
