Improving the success of direct seeding through the application of seed briquettes, aquasorb, and sowing time: case studies on Ceiba pentandra, Enterolobium cyclocarpum, and Calophyllum inophyllum

        Dede J. Sudrajata,Evayusvita Rustam,Nurhasybi,Nurin Widyani,Yulianti,Yupi Isnaini,Popi Aprilianti,Enggal Primananda,Muhammad Zanzibar,Suhartati,Kurniawati P. Putri,Naning Yuniarti,Surono,Vivi 한국산림과학회 2023 Forest Science And Technology Vol.19 No.2

Direct seeding, a planting technique that has long been applied in restoring degraded land and forest, is often doubted to be successful due to many constrains, both biotic and abi- otic. This study aims to increase the success of direct seeding through the application of seed briquettes, aquasorb treatment and determining the right sowing time for three forest tree species, i.e. Ceiba pentandra, Enterolobium cyclocarpum, Calophyllum inophyllum. This study used a randomized block design with two factorials (seed treatments and sowing dates) in each species. Seeds were sown in three blocks in the field according to the sowing time treatments. Each treatment consisted of 10 sowing plots in one block and 5 seeds or seed briquettes in each sowing plot. The results showed that direct seeding when the rain starts to stabilize (ST-2) supported by the use of seed briquettes and the addition of aqua- sorb was able to increase seedling survival, height and root collar diameter of all tested tree species. In general, seed briquettes and the addition of aquasorb provided better seedling survival and growth compared to direct seeding using untreated seeds. C. inophyllum gave higher seedling survival compared to the other two species indicating that this species is very prospective for direct seeding applications due to its high adaptability.

Improvement of seedling quality of red jabon (Neolamarckia macrophylla (Roxb.) Bosser) through seed sowing techniques and seed invigoration

        Naning Yuniarti,Yulianti,Dede J. Sudrajat,Nurhasybi,Muhammad Zanzibar,Dida Syamsuwida,Nina Mindawati,Ahmad Junaedi,Kurniawati Purwaka Putri,Evayusvita Rustam,Nurin Widyani,Yosephin Martha 한국산림과학회 2023 Forest Science And Technology Vol.19 No.3

Red jabon (Neolamarckia macrophylla) is one of potential tree species, but there are some problems in its cultivation. Intermediate seed character and very small seed sizes with little food reserves often cause the low germination, low growth of the seedlings, and the sowing of the seeds to be too dense, resulting in an abnormal number of seedlings. The purpose of the research was to improve the seed germination and seedling quality of red jabon by adjusting the sowing density and seed invigoration treatment using hormonal and bioprim- ing. Two experiments were conducted, that is, (1) identification of optimal seed density on the several combinations of sowing media (top soil, rice husk and compost) and (2) evalu- ation of the most suitable hormonal priming (GA3) and biopriming (liquid organic fertilizer, LOF) applications. The use of top soil media with a seed density of 0.5 g/400 cm2 can pro- duce the highest pure live seed (PLS), that is, 721.67 seedlings/0.5 g. The seed treated by hormonal and bio-priming significantly affected the seed germination and seedling growth. Soaking seed in GA3 100 ppm for 4 days produced the highest of the PLS (764 seedling- s/0.5 g), followed by soaking in LOF for 3 days and GA3 50 ppm for 4 days. The highest seed- ling height was generated from soaking the seeds using LOF for 3 days. The highest root collar diameter and biomass of red jabon seedlings were obtained from the treatment of seeds immersed in the GA3 50 ppm for 3 days. The best quality index value of red jabon seedlings was produced from the treatment of seeds immersed in the hormone GA3 50 ppm for 3 days. In general, a sowing density of 0.5 g/400 cm2 in top soil media and seed soaking treatment in GA3 50 ppm or LOF for 3 days can improve germination and growth of red jabon seedlings.

Toona sureni (blume) merr. Seeds invigoration using 60Co Gamma-Rays irradiation

        Muhammad Zanzibar,Y. M. M. Anita Nugraheni,Kurniawati P. Putri,Naning Yuniarti,Dede J. Sudrajata,Yulianti,Dida Syamsuwida,Aam Aminah,Evayusvita Rustam,Andi Sukendro,Diana Septiningrum 한국산림과학회 2021 Forest Science And Technology Vol.17 No.2

Deteriorated seeds can be improved by invigoration treatment, including gamma-ray irradiation by Cobalt-60 (60Co). The purpose of this study was to determine the proper dose of gamma-ray irradiation (60Co) to increase the decreased vigor of suren (Toona sureni (Blume) Merr.) seeds. This study uses a factorial completely randomized design (CRD) with aging and irradiation as the treatments. Aging factors consisted of 0, 2, and 4 days. Irradiation factor consisted of 7 levels, namely 0, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, and 100 Gy, repeated four times. The parameters observed were the electrical conductivity, germination percentage, germination speed, and seedling height. The results showed that Seed aging treatment significantly affected Suren seed germination with 75% (2 days aging) and 56% (4 days aging) germination. The 40 Gy dose of gamma-ray irradiation could increase germination percentage and germination speed of low suren seed vigor increasing 51.42% and 60.21%, respectively. Simultaneously, the cell membrane damage of stored suren increased with gamma-ray irradiation treatment of more than 40 Gy based on electrical conductivity. In seeds with high germination, such as seeds without aging and seed aging for two days with a germination percentage of 80% and 75%, respectively, the invigoration treatment was not effective. Invigoration treatment was effective in increasing the deteriorated or low viability and vigor of the suren seeds.
